Analysis of Accuracy

a. Analysis of Accuracy

This chapter presents the analysis of accuracy of the translation. The assessment is based on the score collected through questionnaire and the result of depth interview with the raters.

The further analysis of the accuracy will be discussed as follows:

1. Accurate Translation

From the analysis of the accuracy matter, the researcher found that from 211 data of proper names in the novel, there are 200 data which are accurate. The examples are below:

Example 1: ST

: All we had time to put together was the Hall of Screams and the

Lake of Blood, which was just Ro wley‟s old baby pool with half

a bottle of ketchup in it.

TT : Yang sempat kami siapkan hanyalah Lorong Jeritan dan Danau

Darah, yang terbuat dari kolam bermain bayi usang milik Rowley

berisi separuh botol saus tomat di dalamnya.

(datum number 66) The example above is found in the novel telling about Greg‟s haunted house he built at Rowley‟s basement. They created that haunted house by finishing two parts, they are: the Hall of Screams and the Lake of Blood. The

Lake of Blood was just Rowley‟s old baby pool with half a bottle of ketchup in it.

In the example above, the proper name the Lake of Blood in source text is translated into Danau Darah in target text. The researcher considers that the message of the source text has been transferred well into the target text. The word Lake is accurately translated into Bahasa Indonesia Danau as its equivalent word; meanwhile Blood is Darah in TT. The preposition of in that proper name does not need to translate because it refers to the content of that Lake which is showed by the word Blood ( Cambridge Learner‟s Dictionary 2 nd Edition, 2004). If it is described briefly, it refers to the Lake containing blood in ST or Danau yang Berisi Darah in TT. The translation Danau Darah has represented for that description by using DM (Diterangkan-Menerangkan) pattern in TT. Danau in TT has been explained by the word Darah as its content. All the message of ST has been delivered well in TT. So, the translation is accurate.

Example 2: ST

: Rowley got me a Big Wheel.

TT : Rowley memberiku sebuah sepeda mainan beroda besar, Big

Wheel.

(datum number 138) The example above is found in the novel telling about Greg‟s

In the example above, the proper name Big Wheel in source text is translated into sebuah sepeda mainan beroda besar, Big Wheel in target text. The translator applies copy and addition technique in translating that name. The researcher considers that the translation is accurately conveyed into the target text. The message of the source text has been transferred well into the target text. The additional information about the description of Big Wheel in TT increases the clarity for the readers. A Big Wheel is a type of tricycle, usually made of plastic, with an oversized front wheel, that rides very low to the ground. Introduced by Louis Marx and Company in 1969, the Big Wheel was a very popular toy in the 1970s in the United States, partly because of its low cost and partly because consumer groups said it was a safer alternative to the traditional tricycle or bicycle (www.wikipedia.com/big_wheel_(tricycle) accessed on 14 th March 2012).

From the definition above, it can be said that big wheel is a kind of toys, so that when the translator called it as sepeda mainan in TT, it represents the message of ST. Besides the illustration in the novel is also supported the accuracy of the translation. The picture illustrates that Rowley gave the big wheel to Greg. He showed tricycle which is usually used by the children who cannot ride bicycle yet, which has an oversized front wheel to Greg in his yard. The illustration becomes the reason of the translator not to mention which wheel is the biggest than others in its translation. He just adds

information „sepeda mainan beroda besar‟ without emphasizing „sepeda information „sepeda mainan beroda besar‟ without emphasizing „sepeda

delivered. It means the translation is accurate. In both examples above, all the raters gave the same scores 3 for each of datum. The mean 3 is the highest mean rank. From 200 accurate data, there are 194 data which got the same score. Meanwhile, there are only 6 data which are classified into this classification but they have the mean less than 3. It means that not all of raters consider the data as accurate translation. The examples are below:

Example 1: ST

: His mom bought him this book called “How to Make Friends in New Places ,” and he came to my house trying all these dumb gimmicks.

TT

: Ibunya membelikannya sebuah buku berjudul “Bagaimana Mendapatkan Teman di Tempat Baru ,” dan dia datang ke rumahku untuk mencoba semua banyolan yang ada di dalam buku itu.

(datum number 40) The example above is found in the novel telling about Greg‟s best friend, Rowley, who naively introduced his self by using the procedure written in a book titled “How to Make Friends in New Places”. It happened (datum number 40) The example above is found in the novel telling about Greg‟s best friend, Rowley, who naively introduced his self by using the procedure written in a book titled “How to Make Friends in New Places”. It happened

take him under his wing. That book is evidence that Rowley is a simple person. It is why Greg sometimes got to use all the tricks of his brother, Rodrick, pulls on him to Rowley.

In the example above, the proper name “How to Make Friends in New Places ” in source text is translated into “Bagaimana Mendapatkan Teman di Tempat Baru ” in target text. The translator applies rendition, deletion, and transposition technique in translating that name. There are only

2 raters agree that the translation is accurate because the message of ST is conveyed in TT accurately. The other one argued that the translation is less

accurate and gives score 2 because it should translate into “Bagaimana Cara

B erteman di Tempat Baru”. There is the omission of the message of ST in TT for the word to in ST which is translated into cara, so that, she considers that its translation is less accurate. The researcher does not agree if the translation is considered as less accurate translation because even there is an omission of the translation the word to in ST or cara in TT, it does not reduce the message of this translation. The message is conveyed well even though the word cara does not exist. The message of cara has been delivered by the word bagaimana which tells the process of something. The word how in ST means way which is used to ask about the way something happens or is done

(Cambridge Learner‟s Dictionary 2 nd Edition, 2004). The researcher tends to consider that the datum number 40 is accurate.

Example 2: ST

: Tonight me and Mom went out to get a gift for the Giving Tree

at church

TT

: Malam ini, aku dan Mom akan pergi ke acara memberikan hadiah

Pohon Rezeki di gereja.

(datum number 130) The example abo ve is found in the novel telling about Greg‟s activity in Christmas. There are some social events held by church in Christmas, such as Giving Tree.

In example above, the proper name Giving Tree in source text is translated into Pohon Rezeki in target text. According to the researcher, the proper name Giving Tree in ST which is translated into Pohon Rezeki in TT is accurate. The original message has been delivered even though it is conveyed by using the unrelated words with the ST. The translator uses the simplest word and straights to the point in translating it into TT without reducing the original message of ST. In the story, the Giving Tree is name of an event. It is a symbol of charity from the philanthropists to the needy people. They give many kinds of gifts which are put under the Christmas Tree. The Giving Tree refers to the tree which can give gifts or can grant the

one‟s wishes. It can relate to the story of The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein one‟s wishes. It can relate to the story of The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein

In Indonesian culture, there is not any event which is equivalent with the Giving Tree event. When Christmas comes, there is not any specific event which is similar to it in Indonesia. So, when the translator translates the

Giving Tree in ST into Pohon Rezeki, it does not matter. The Giving Tree

semantically refers to the Tree which gives something (to everyone who needs). Something which is given by the Tree is fortune for everyone who gets it. It means when it is translated into Pohon Rezeki, which also refers to the same meaning, the message of ST is delivered in TT. Pohon in TT is equivalent with the Tree in ST, meanwhile the word Rezeki in TT explains to the character of the tree which always gives. The gift of the tree is fortune for the people who get. Completely, the Giving Tree means Pohon yang memberi (rejeki). When it is only translated into Pohon Rezeki, the message has been delivered.

2. Less accurate Translation

This classification is a class for the data that are considered less accurate by the raters. From 211 data of proper names found in the novel, there are 4 data which are classified into this classification. The examples are below:

Example 1: ST

: They don‟t come right out and tell you if you‟re in the Gifted group or the Easy group, but you can figure it out away by looking at the covers of the books they hand out.

TT

: Para guru tidak terang-terangan bilang apakah kita masuk ke dalam kelompok Berbakat atau kelompok Biasa-Biasa Saja. Namun, kita bisa segera menebaknya dengan melihat sampul buku yang mereka bagikan.

(datum number 35) The example above is found in the novel telling about the reading

class held in Greg‟s school. They got test for reading two kinds of books which decides the kind of group of reading they would join. The groups are

the Gifted group and Easy group. Actually, Greg wanted to be selected to join in Easy group because there are not many assignments he got. But, in the end, he blessed that he was not selected to join that group, because he saw the students of Easy group was holding their books upside down. The book entitled Bink Says Boo.

In example above, the proper name Easy group in source text is translated into kelompok Biasa-Biasa Saja in target text. Two raters agree that the original message of ST is not totally conveyed in TT by giving score

2. They argue that the word easy refers to mudah as it can be found in the level of games in computer. The easy level is for the beginners who have low or customary skill, so that, if the translator said that easy is equivalent with biasa-biasa saja, they can receive the original message even though some message are lost. It means that the datum number 35 is less accurate translation.

Meanwhile, the other rater who gives score 1 states that easy and biasa-biasa saja is not equivalent. The original message of the word easy is not delivered well. The researcher agrees with the last opinion because the proper name “easy group” and “Kelompok Biasa-Biasa Saja” has different semantic meaning. The Easy Group is a predicate of group of people which is always given the easy lesson in reading class. It means that the group has low skill to catch the material or lesson from the teacher. Based on the context of story, that group has the lowest skill in their class. Their reading skill is

low. Meanwhile, the phrase „kelompok Biasa-Biasa Saja‟ is semantically different with that situation. That group refers to the group which has middle

level skill. Their skill is intermediate, in which their skill is not low, but they are also not excellent. So, the message of ST is not delivered well. It can be said that the translation should be included into “not accurate translation”. The level skill. Their skill is intermediate, in which their skill is not low, but they are also not excellent. So, the message of ST is not delivered well. It can be said that the translation should be included into “not accurate translation”. The

Example 2: ST

I just put one of my discs in Manny‟s “Discovering the Alphabet ” case, and that‟s all it takes.

TT

: Aku tinggal memasukkan salah satu CD permainanku ke dalam kotak “Bermain Bersama Alfabet” milik Manny, dan semuanya

beres.

(datum number 53) The example above is found in the novel telling about Greg‟s problem

when he cannot play all kinds of games at Rowley‟s house. Rowley‟s father always checks all kinds of games he brought to Rowley‟s house. Greg tried to find way to pass him. He just put one of his discs in Manny‟s Discovering the Alphabet case. Manny is his three-year little brother.

In the example above, the proper name Discovering the Alphabet in source text is translated into “Bermain Bersama Alfabet” in target text. This translation is less accurate because there is a message lost. Actually, discovering in ST is equivalent with menemukan in TT. The word

menemukan is different with bermain in TT. Discovering or Menemukan

means trying to find something or someone, or in this context, trying to find means trying to find something or someone, or in this context, trying to find

translator uses the word bermain, it means the gamer is asked to play with alphabet. It is too general. The gamer can be asked for forming or arranging word with the alphabet, guessing the alphabet, until finding the alphabet which is lost. Meanwhile, the picture illustrates that Manny, the little brother of Greg, was playing the game of “Discovering the Alphabet” and there was

a speech of narrator who was asking the word by giving clue to the gamer. The gamer just need to add one alphabet which is lost. So, from the illustration picture of this game, it is not specific when the translator uses the word bermain in TT as the translation of discovering

in ST. This translation of “Discovering the Alphabet” in ST into “Bermain

Bersama Alfabet ” in TT is less accurate. It is better if the translator translates “Discovering the Alphabet” into “Menemukan Huruf” or “Menemukan

Huruf yang Hilang ”. This translation will represent the content of that game. Besides, the use of the word Huruf is better than the use of the word Alfabet because it is clearer for kids. Some of them consider that Alfabet is about number; in fact, it is quite different. Alfabet is about letter so that the readers will directly know about the content.

Example 3: ST

: I'm sure our Giving Tree guy will throw his sweater in the trash : I'm sure our Giving Tree guy will throw his sweater in the trash

(datum number 132) The example above is found in the novel telling about the Giving Tree when it comes to Christmas. The Giving Tree is an event which was charity program of Church which involved the needy person. They get gift from the philanthropist who joined in that event. Greg‟s mother gave a giant red wool

sweater for the needy. Greg tried to talk to his Mom into getting something a lot cooler, such as TV or slushie machine. Because when Greg imagines if the Giving Tree guy got sweater as Christmas present, he was sure that he will throw that sweater in the trash.

In the example above, the proper name Giving Tree in ST is translated into yang menerima sweter in TT. This translation is less accurate because there is a message of ST that is lost. Actually, the Giving Tree is an event where the guy who get sweater as his present in that event are imagined by Greg to be throw his present to the trash. In this context, the Giving Tree guy indeed refers to „the guy who will get the sweater‟ or „orang yang menerima sweter ‟ in TT. But, in TT, there is a message of ST that is omitted. The translation does not mention that „the guy who joined the Giving Tree will throw the sweater‟. The translator only says that „the guy who got a sweater will throw the sweater in the trash‟ or „orang yang menerima sweter itu akan melemparnya ke tong sampah‟ (the word „-nya‟ in „melemparnya‟ In the example above, the proper name Giving Tree in ST is translated into yang menerima sweter in TT. The translator only says that „the guy who got a sweater will throw the sweater in the trash‟ or „orang yang menerima sweter itu akan melemparnya ke tong sampah‟ (the word „-nya‟ in „melemparnya‟

Pohon Rezeki itu akan melempar sweter itu ke tong sampah‟. The phrase „yang mengikuti acara Pohon Rezeki‟ has different stressing with the phrase „yang menerima sweter‟. The first phrase emphasizes on „the Giving Tree

event‟, meanwhile in the second one stress on information about „the sweater‟. In fact, the message of ST emphasizes on „the Giving Tree event‟, so that the message is less accurate. Besides, the phrase „yang menerima sweter‟ can be

everyone. It will be possible that the guy who does not join in the Giving Tree event get sweater and will throw it in the trash. Even though, in this context, the translation remains referring to the same person/ guy. It is the reason why the translation of this proper name is less accurate.

Example 4: ST

: In June, all the officers in the Safety Patrols go on a trip to Six

Flags, and they get to take along one friend.

TT

: Pada bulan Juni, semua petugas Pengawas Keamanan pergi jalan-

jalan ke Six Flag, dan mereka boleh membawa seorang teman.

(datum number 177) The example above is found in the novel telling about Safety Patrols at

Greg‟s school. Initially, Greg and his friend, Rowley, was part of them. But, because of Greg‟s fault, Rowley was suspended by Mr. Winsky as Safety Greg‟s school. Initially, Greg and his friend, Rowley, was part of them. But, because of Greg‟s fault, Rowley was suspended by Mr. Winsky as Safety

In example above, the proper name Six Flags in source text is translated into Six Flag in target text. All the raters agree that the translation is correct, but, there is the message of the ST which is missing. It means that the datum number 138 is less accurate translation. The researcher also has the same opinion with them because the place name/ the geographical locations should be translated as it is. The word Six Flags in ST experiences an omission of the „s‟ in TT into Six Flag. The alphabet „s‟ refers to the plural

objects. However, it is not about the plural or singular, but it is more about the name of place which does not need some changes in TT, except the geographical locations which is conventionally accepted as the translation of a particular SL name. Even though the translation refers to the same reference, but there is an omission in the original message. So, this translation is less accurate.

3. Inaccurate Translation

The classification consists of data that are considered inaccurate. From 211 data of proper names found in the novel, there are 7 data which are classified into this classification. The examples are below:

Example 1: ST

(data number 3) The example above is found in the novel telling about what day Greg wrote his note in his diary. In example above, the proper name Tuesday in source text is translated into Kamis in target text. The researcher considered that the message of that proper name is not accurately conveyed into the target text. It indicates that the datum number 3 is inaccurate translation. The message of the source text has not been transferred well into the target text. It should be translated into Selasa in TT as the equivalent word of Tuesday in ST.

Example 2: ST

: I was peeking through the curtain to check out how many people showed up to see the play, and guess who was standing right up front? My brother Rodrick, wearing a clip-on tie

TT

: Aku kebetulan sedang mengintip melalui tirai untuk melihat berapa banyak orang yang muncul untuk menonton kami, dan

Rodney, memakai dasi jepit

(data number 33) The example above is a part of the novel telling that the main actor, Greg, was going to perform in the play in his school and he saw his brother, Rodrick, wh o was sitting in the audiences‟ seats. His brother is bothering person. He brought a video camera for perpetuating that moment as ridiculous material toward Greg in the future.

In example above, the proper name Rodrick in source text is translated into Rodney in target text. The researcher considered that the message of that proper name is not accurately conveyed into the target text. It indicates that the datum is inaccurate translation. It should be translated into Rodrick in TT as the equivalent word of Rodrick in ST by applying copy technique. Actually, the name Rodney in the novel is the name of Greg‟ friend at school.

Example 3: ST

: Wednesday

TT

:Ø The example above is a part of the novel telling about the date Greg

wrote in his diary. He always wrote the month and day in his diary in order to record when the activities or events happens in his life.

In example above, the proper name Wednesday in source text is not In example above, the proper name Wednesday in source text is not

Example 4: ST

: I usually make a big wish list every year, but this Christmas, all I really want is this video game called Twisted Wizard.

TT

: Aku biasanya membuat daftar keinginan yang panjang setiap tahun. Namun, tahun ini, yang kuinginkan hanyalah video game terbaru berjudul Twisted Wizard.

(data number 86) The example above is found in the novel telling about the Christmas wish list. Every year he always makes a wish list. In that list, Greg will write more than one things that he want as his Christmas present. But, in this Christmas, it is different. He did not make a wish list. The only one thing that

he wanted was the video game called Twisted Wizard as his Christmas gift. In the example above, the proper name Christmas which is translated into tahun ini in TT. The researcher considered that the message of that proper name is not accurately conveyed into the target text. It indicates that the datum is inaccurate translation. The word Christmas in ST is equivalent

this year. When the translator translates Christmas in ST into tahun ini in TT, the message is not delivered because tahun ini c an be „this Christmas‟ yet. Year is a period of 12 months, or 365 or 366 days, especially from 1 January to 31 December. Meanwhile, Christmas is around 25 December. According to Cambridge Learner‟s Dictionary 2 nd Edition, Christmas is the Christian period of celebration around 25 December, when Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and people give each other presents, or the day itself (2004). So that, this translation is not accurate. The translator should translate „this Christmas‟ into Natal ini or Natal tahun ini.

Example 5: ST

: But I have a secret weapon when it comes to Christmas.

TT

: Namun, soal hadiah Natal, aku memiliki senjata rahasia. (datum number 87) The example above is found in the novel telling about the Christmas wish list. When Greg was seven years old, he wished to get Barbie Dream House, but his father forbade him. Even though his Mom supported Greg, but his father was sticking rigidly. Greg had another idea for reaching his goal. He had an uncle, named Uncle Charlie who always gives him anything he wants. Uncle Charlie was the secret weapon when it comes to Christmas.

In the example above, the proper name Christmas in source text does not translated in target text. The proper name Christmas is out of the meaning

Christmas. The phrase Hadiah Natal in TT is new term inserted in the translation of that sentence. Basically, the phrase „When it comes to

Christmas‟ has the original message “ketika Natal tiba” in TT. Natal in that

phrase has different meaning with the word Natal in the phrase „soal hadiah

Natal‟. It means that the translation of the original message is lost. The message of the source text has not been transferred well into the TT.

However, there is basically a reason why the translator omits the phrase „ketika Natal tiba‟ and insert the phrase „soal hadiah Natal‟. It is because he

tried to emphasize the Christmas present which becomes the main problem of Greg when the Christmas comes. Greg has a wish list in Christmas when he was seven. His father did not agree when he wrote “Barbie Dream House” in his list, even though Greg‟s mother agreed and they got a fight over it.

Unfortunately, his father won his argument. Fortunately, Greg has a secret weapon that is his Uncle Charlie who will give everything he wants. This

background became the consideration to change the phrase „ketika Natal tiba ‟ into „soal hadiah Natal‟. It may be the translator thinks that the phrase

„soal hadiah Natal‟ is clearer and understandable by the readers than the phrase „ketika Natal tiba‟ if it is based on the context. That phrase can reduce the confusion of the reader in understanding the translation. When the

translation remains to be „aku memiliki senjata rahasia ketika Natal tiba‟, it will less appropriate with the previous paragraph. The tension/ suspension translation remains to be „aku memiliki senjata rahasia ketika Natal tiba‟, it will less appropriate with the previous paragraph. The tension/ suspension

Natal in the phrase „soal hadiah Natal‟. It means the message of ST is not delivered, so that the translation is not accurate.

Example 6: ST

: I was heading up to Rowley‟s today to play our Big Wheel game again, but Mom said I had to finish my Christmas thank-yous before I went out anywhere.

TT

: Hari ini, aku hendak pergi ke rumah Rowley untuk bermain Big Wheel lagi, tetapi Mom bilang aku harus menyelesaikan semua kartu ucapan terima kasih sebelum aku pergi ke mana pun.

(datum number 89) The example above is found in the novel telling about Greg when Christmas came. He got a Big Wheel as the Christmas present from his friend,

Rowley. That day, he would go to Rowley‟s house to play his Big Wheel game again, but his Mom said he had to finish my Christmas thank-yous

before he went out anywhere. Christmas thank-you is a letter/ card which contains the note of thank you because of gift people give to us. Greg got many present from his aunties and the other relatives, so that he wrote some Christmas thank-yous for them. Initially, he wrote three cards by his self, but before he went out anywhere. Christmas thank-you is a letter/ card which contains the note of thank you because of gift people give to us. Greg got many present from his aunties and the other relatives, so that he wrote some Christmas thank-yous for them. Initially, he wrote three cards by his self, but

In the example above, Christmas in ST is not translated in TT. The phrase Christmas thank- yous in ST is only translated into „semua kartu ucapa n terima kasih‟. The researcher considered that the message of that proper name is not accurately conveyed into the target text. The proper name Christmas has important part in this phrase. It refers to the specific thank-you card/ specific object. The translator should translate the word Christmas in ST into Natal as equivalent word in TT. The omission of the message of ST indicates that the datum is inaccurate translation.

Example 7: ST

: I kind of decided to throw in the towel for this Christmas, and I

headed up to Rowley‟s house.

TT

: Aku memutuskan untuk melupakan semua urusan Natal dan

pergi ke rumah Rowley.

(datum number 90) The example above is found in the novel telling abut Greg‟s Christmas was out of his expectation. His wish list in Christmas of that year was just

getting a video game called Twisted Wizard. Unfortunately, he just got a wool sweater. His gift got accidentally exchanged with the gift for the charity event in the church called Giving Tree. It happened because his Mom wrapped the

In the example above, the proper name Christmas in source text is translated into semua urusan Natal in target text. Two raters gave scores 1 and one rater gave score 2 which means the translation is less accurate. She

argued that “this Christmas” refers to “Natal kali ini” and not to “semua

urusan Natal”. The message is not totally delivered. Meanwhile, the other raters state that the original message of the proper name is not delivered. The proper name Natal in the phrase “semua urusan Natal” is quite different with Natal in the phrase “Natal kali ini” as its original message of the ST.

The researcher does not agree with all raters‟ opinion because she thinks that the phrase “this Christmas” as the original message of ST is equivalent with „semua urusan Natal‟ in TT.

The phrase „this Christmas‟ in the original message refers to object of the sentence in which something which wants to forget by Greg by saying the

idiom „to throw in the towel‟ which means „menyerah‟ or ingin melupakan. In its translation, Natal in the phrase „semua urusan Natal‟ also refers to the similar thing. The tension of the phrase „semua urusan Natal‟ is Natal as

something which is explained by the word „semua urusan‟. The pattern of „semua urusan Natal‟ is M-H/ Modifier-Head with the head of that phrase is Natal. The translator considers that he has to give additional information in TT because of the readability factor. It is understandable when Greg said that

he wants to forget about some problems he found in the Christmas. In TT, it will be more understandable when the translator says „semua urusan Natal‟ he wants to forget about some problems he found in the Christmas. In TT, it will be more understandable when the translator says „semua urusan Natal‟
