2. Less Readable

This classification consists of data that are considered as less acceptable translation. From 211 data, there are 70 data which are classified into less readable translation. The examples are as follows:

Example 1:

Example 2: ST

told that Greg slept through the whole summer, but that luckily he woke up just in time for the first day of school. Actually, Greg was not stupid boy. But, Rodrick was too tricky to make Greg believe in him. Rodrick was dressed up

in his school clothes and he set Greg‟s alarm clock ahead to make it look like it was the morning. Plus, he closed Greg‟s curtains so Greg could not see that

it was still dark. Then, Greg got dressed and went downstairs to make himself some breakfast as he usually does. But he made a pretty big racket because his

Dad was downstairs, yelling at him for eating Cheerios at 3:00 in the morning.

The proper name Cheerios is translated into Cheerios in TT. The translator keeps it because there is not any equivalent word for this proper name. Cheerios is a brand of breakfast cereal by General Mills introduced on May 1, 1941 as the first oat-based, ready-to-eat cold cereal (www.wikipedia.org/cheerios accessed on 9 th August 2011). Not all of the respondents know that this is brand name of cereal. Only three respondents that guessed that this is kind of cereal from the illustration picture appeared in this novel. But, the other respondents have known that this is kind of food, but they do not know the specification. They were also read twice to get the brand name when the researcher asked about the name of food that was eaten by Greg before he went to school. From the explanation above, it can be seen that this translation is less readable in TT.

Example 3: ST

: But the thing that bugs me the most about Manny is the nickname

he has for me. When he w as a baby, he couldn‟t pronounce “brother,” so he started calling me “Bubby”.

feeling when his little brother called him Bubby. He hated that nickname. It happened when his little brother, Manny, was a baby, he couldn‟t pronounce “brother,” so he started calling me “Bubby”. Greg tried hard to keep that

name away from his friends at school. If they heard it, his life would be end. The proper name Bubby is translated into Bubby in TT. The translator keeps it without any change because there is not any equivalent word of Bubby in TT. Actually, it is such kind of unfamiliar nickname in TT. It can be seen from the way they read. Almost of them read it as it is pronounced in TT, that is Bubby (read: Bubbi). Some of them read it twice when answering the question from the researcher, however, they understand enough about whom the proper name refers to. From eleven respondents, there is only once who can answer the question after once-time reading. She also read it correctly and understands about it. However, it does not change the fact that this translation remains less readable in TT.

Example 4: ST

: I have never gotten to listen to one of those Parental Warning CDs, because Mom and Dad never let me buy them at the mall.

The proper name Parental Warning is translated into yang pada kemasannya terdapat stiker “Peringatan Untuk Orangtua” in TT. It is

grammatically correct. The translator adds information in order to make it clear for the target readers. Actually, it is understandable for some respondents. From eleven respondents, there are five of them who understand it well even it is not quite familiar for target readers in TT. They can answer the questions of the researcher by once-time reading. Some of them recognize that they have ever found the CD with the warning from his father‟s CD, but

others said that they have never seen it. Meanwhile, there are five respondents who less understand and only one respondent who is not understands it. From the explanation above, it means that the translation is less readable.

Parental Warning CD is basically CD with a sticker which tells parents that something bad may happen in the future, so that they can prevent

Parental Warning called Bimbingan Orangtua (BO). It is usually found in the particular television program broadcasted in TV, such as movie.

Example 5: ST

: Right in the middle of our game, Mrs. Craig came around the

corner and caught us red-handed.

house. Greg asked Rowley to bring his CD player to school even though it was not allowed to bring personal music players to school. Greg and Rowley had to wait until lunch if they wanted to use it. As soon as they got chance, Greg and Rowley snuck around the back of the school and loaded up

Rodrick‟s CD. Unfortunately, Rowley forgot to put batteries in this CD player, so it was pretty much worthless. Then, Greg had an idea for a game.

While they were having fun with that CD player, Mrs. Craig came around the corner and caught them red-handed. She took the music player away from them and started to chew them out. She started telling them how rock and roll

is “evil” and how it is going to ruin their brains.

The title Mrs. (read: m ɪsɪz) is translated into Mrs. (read: mɪsɪz) in TT. The translator keeps the title without any changing in TT. In fact, he can

change it into Nyonya as equivalent word in TT. Moreover, there are not all of readers can read the abbreviation well. It means that the word does not understandable well. From eleven respondents interviewed, there are only two respondents who read it and understand it well. Meanwhile one respondent do not know how to read and what the title refer to. He read it as he pronounced

Mr. (read: m ɪstə r ). The others understand, but they do not read it well. It

means that the translation is less understandable in TT. It means that it is less readable. The word Mrs. is a title for a married woman, used before her family name or full name (Cambridge Le arner‟s Dictionary 2 nd Edition, 2004).

Example 6: ST

:Bryan has this comic called "Wacky Dawg" and when it started

off, it was actually pretty funny.

The proper name Wacky Dawg is translated into "Wacky Dawg" (Si Anjing Sinting) in TT. The translation is grammatically correct. The translator keeps the phrase of TT so that the message of ST is delivered. He gives additional information by adding the word Si Anjing Sinting. The additional information is very helpful for the readers. They can receive the message of ST by reading the translation of Wacky Dawg which is inserted. Even though they initially do not know what the meaning of Wacky Dawg when they first time read it. The readers in TT will understand if the word dawg refers to dog which means anjing in TT. But, the word dawg is less familiar and understandable for respondents. It is why when in the next sentences, some respondents have to turn back to the previous page to look for the meaning of the Wacky Dawg which is written without its translation. Seven respondents had done twice reading.

Actually, in the novel the readers can find the example of the comic slot which shows the dog as main character. But, it is too short. Moreover, in this slot the character told the funny and wacky part of the comic. The example of comic is when Bryan Little has been using his strip to handle his personal business. The comic told about Wacky Dawg, the main character of the comic, making a statement to Susan Lim, one of student in Greg‟s school.

Wacky Dawg was sorry to Susan Lim because he kissed his best friend Rachel behind the lockers. It becomes the reason why the respondents cannot find the funny thing of Wacky Dawg. From the explanation above it can be seen that this translation is less readable.

Example 7: ST

: Fregley tried to get me to play Twister with him, so I made sure I

stayed ten feet away from him at all times.

a new friend named Collin Lee. Meanwhile, Greg had no other choice except make a friendship with Fregley. Fregley was so weird. Greg only did not want to look bad in front of Rowley. Greg, then, went to Fregley‟s house. Fregley

tried to get Greg to play Twister with him, so Greg made sure he stayed ten feet away from him at all times.

The proper name Twister is translated into Twister in TT. The translator keeps the word in TT without any changing because there is not any equivalent word in TT for this game. This is name of games which can see from th e context “Fregley tried to get me to play “Twister”. This message of

ST was caught by the readers, especially the respondents that Twister is a name of game. But, almost of them did not know what kind of games it is. All respondents less understand and have never heard before. Some of them stated that Twister is playing card. Besides, some of them had to read it once again to answer the question from the researcher. From the result, it can be seen that the translation is less readable.

Twister is a game of physical skill produced by Hasbro Games. It is played on a large plastic mat that is spread on the floor or ground. The mat has four rows of large colored circles on it with a different color in each row: red, yellow, blue and green. A spinner is attached to a square board and serves to shows where the player has to put their hand or foot. The spinner is divided into four labeled sections: right foot, left foot, right hand, and left hand. Due to the scarcity of colored circles, players will often be required to put themselves in unlikely or precarious positions, eventually causing someone to fall. A person is eliminated when they fall or when their elbow or knee touches the mat. Example 8: ST

One way to reach it is by getting Best Dressed in the year book of his school. But, after he thought it twice, he cancelled it because he had to get his picture taken with Jenna Stewart, and she dresses like a Pilgrim.

The proper name Pilgrim is translated into Pilgrim with additional information in footnote form. The translator adds the meaning of Pilgrim in TT as orang-orang Inggris yang hijrah ke Amerika pada 1620. This additional information is very helpful for the target readers. It is proved that even the respondents are first time heard it; almost of them understand the meaning even though they have to read it twice to answer the question from the researcher. Meanwhile, only one respondent who can answer it well after once reading. It means that this translation is less readable in TT.
