F. Trustworthiness of the Data

To obtain a trustworthy research, researchers should ensure that their findings and interpretations are valid and reliable. Guba 1981: 80 suggests four criteria which can be used to measure research trustworthiness, namely credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability. In this study, two of the criteria, that is, credibility and confirmability, were implemented to promote the trustworthiness of the data. Credibility refers to the accuracy of the findings. The findings are called credible if they accurately describe the subject of investigation. Confirmability, furthermore, is related to the objectivity of the findings. It checks whether the findings are not derived from the researcher’s own perceptions but really based on the information gained from the context in which the data are taken. To fulfil the credibility and confirmability criteria, the researcher carried out triangulation. According to Denzin in Guba, 1981: 85, triangulation involves authenticating the research findings through multiple evidence, i.e. data sources, theories, investigators, and methods. With regard to this research, the data trustworthiness using the triangulation method was attained by cross-checking the data through theories and investigators. To perform the theory triangulation, the 59 researcher adopted and combined theories from different scholars to answer the research problems. In the case of the investigator triangulation, the researcher asked for the assistance of two fellow students who major in linguistics to review the research findings and interpretations. Additionally, in order to corroborate the accuracy of the triangulated findings, the researcher also consulted with her supervisors regarding the results of the study.
