Learning Activities Based on the discussion on the implementation of English teaching learning activities in the first grade students in the target school and the students’ perception on the English teaching learning activities, it was conclude that basically they had positive perception on English teaching learning activities. They thought that English is important; they needed it for their future. They also stated that the English teaching learning activities in their school helped them to have better English proficiency. However, there are some problems that could make the students tended to have negative perception on English teaching learning activities in their school. It was because of some problems in the implementation of English teaching learning activities. Some of the problems were: a. The students’ motivation Students’ low motivation to learn vocabulary and tenses as well as to maximize the use of English as a means to communication during the lesson obstructed the implementation of CBC in this school. b. The similar activities for each meeting Based on some observations and interviews, it was found that the activities in English teaching learning activities were almost the same for each meeting. The teacher always began the teaching learning activities with checking homework. After that, the teacher explained some important points of the material that would be discussed. Then, the teacher asked the students to do some exercises from the handout. There were not games or interesting activities such as learn outside the class or watching video or movie as a media. c. Students’ habit Students’ habit of being busy during the English teaching learning activities and going out from classroom between the lessons disturbed the teaching learning activities. The habit of being busy during the teaching learning activities would disturb activities which needed high concentration, such as paying attention to teacher’s explanation or solving difficult assignment. Students’ habit of going out from the classroom in between lessons decreased the lesson meeting hours. d. Unclear instructions One of the causes of students’ noisy was unclear instruction given by the teacher. In delivering the material, the teacher’s voice was not loud enough, so, the students could not hear the teacher’s instruction clearly. This situation makes the students confused and did not do what the task given by the teacher then they would ask to other students then made the class noisy. e. Limitation of the school facilities The structure of the school building, the inexistence of language laboratory, and the limited of audio-visual equipment obstructed the implementation of curriculum in this school. There were some suggestions in order to improve the quality of the teaching learning activities in this school. Below are some suggestions that were proposed to be applied in teaching learning activities. a. Some possible suggestions based on the students’ opinions as wrote in the questionnaire The students stated that the teaching learning activities in this school were actually had been good enough but it was noisy and make them feel bored. Therefore, the students suggested conducting English teaching learning activities not only in class, but also outside the classroom in order to avoid students’ boredom. Moreover, they also suggested to conduct English teaching learning activities which employed interesting instruments, such as movies, songs or pictures, so, they would not bored and busy by themselves. The students also suggested working in small group in practicing English skills, so they could cooperate with their friends. They stated they felt more confidents when they develop the English skills in groups. b. Some suggestions based on the point of view of the researcher as a result of library study 1. Increase students’ motivation In order to increase students’ motivation to learn, the English teacher could use the influence reinforcements and reward on the students’ extrinsic motivation. However, in giving rewards, the teacher should consider several important problems associated with the use of rewards which could reduce students’ intrinsic interest in a task. Rewards should be used only when other attempt such as altering the approach to presenting the material, individual goal setting, and other motivational and instructional strategies have failed Brophy, 1987. 2. Vary the activities The English teacher needed to vary the English learning activities more, the activities that more interesting and attract students’ interest in order to avoid students’ boredom. Moreover, interesting activities could help students learn and understand the material easier. This was done in order to avoid students who found the lesson boring and got depressed during the English learning Jones and Jones, 1995. 3. Make the instructions clearer There were some solutions in order to make teacher’s instruction clearer. Firstly, the teacher should give precise directions. Secondly, the teacher should describe the expected quality of work. Thirdly, the teacher should vary the approach in giving instruction. Fourthly, the teacher should ask the students to paraphrase the given instructions. Fifthly, the teacher should give the correct model behaviors Jones and Jones, 1995 4. Increase the school facilities Since the variation of the English learning activities and the implementation of CBC with some expanding in this school was limited by the limitation of facilities. Therefore, as aforementioned, it was needed to increase the school facilities in order to form supportive teaching learning environment Willis, 2003.
