E. Materi Pokok
Definition of Narrative Text Narrative text is a text that tells story which is arranged chronologically based on
the time order about the events happened. The purpose of the text is to entertain, to express feelings, to relate experience, to
inform, and to persuade or to amuse readers or listeners about the story in the past.
Generic Structure in Narrative Text a.
Orientation, it contains plot and characters. It also describes the scene and introduces the participants of the story.
b. Complications, it is the crisis of the story. It begins when there is a problem encountered by the characters.
c. Sequence of events, it is where the narrator tells how the characters react to
the complication. It includes their feelings and what they do. The events can be told in chronological order the order in which they happen or with
flashback. d. Resolution, it is where the crisis is resolved, for better or for worse or it can
be said when the participants find the resolution. e.
Coda, it contains the lesson or the moral value from the story. Language Features of Narrative Text
a. Nouns : identify the specific characters and places in the story
b. Adjectives : provide accurate descriptions of the characters and settings c.
Verbs : show the actions that occur in the story d. Time words : connect events, telling when they occurred

Types of Narrative Text There are some common types of narrative text that are learned in secondary
schools and those are usually some popular ones: a.
Fable is a short story with a moral in which the characters are animals that
behaving like humans. Example : The three little pigs, Ugly Duckling, Bambi, Rabbit and Turtle,etc.
b. Fairy tale is a story of humans and their dealings with magical or unlogic
things such as fairies, dragons, wizards, etc. Example: Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty, Thumbelina, Peterpan, Pinocchio, etc.
c. Legend
is a traditional story sometimes popularly regarded as historical but unauthenticated. Example: Story of Danau Toba, Malin Kundang, Tangkuban
Perahu,etc.
d. Myth is a kind of traditional story especially one concerning the early history
of people or explaining some natural or social phenomenon. Example: The Crying Stone.
Example of Narrative Text: A Boy and Apple Tree
A long time ago, there was a huge apple tree. A little boy loved to come and play around it everyday. He climbed to the treetop, ate the apples, and took a nap under the shadow.
He loved the tree and the tree loved to play with him.
