articipants’ Motivation on Joining the Course The information about the course participants’ motivation on joining the English course were collected by two techniques, they are interview and questionnaire. As the interviews were done with eight interviewees, the questionnaires were distributed to nine respondents due to the time constraint the writer faced. The questionnaires, as it was stated before, were complements of the information collected through interview technique. Concerning the course participants’ motivation on joining the English course, it is not mere about forces which support them to join the course. The motivation includes also some elements of the course that really motivated them to willingly engage themselves into the course. Hence, in this section the course participants’ motivation on joining the course is divided into two classes, namely internal factors and external factors. It was made so in order to see clearly what matters which the course organizer needs to pay attention to, either to the course participants or to the environment the participants belong to. 1 Internal Factors The internal factors of the motivation the course participants had can be depicted from the answers they gave to some interview questions as follows: Karena kursus bahasa Inggris ini wajib, maka semua siswa harus mengikutinya. Namun demikian, apakah menurut kamu mengikuti kursus bahasa Inggris di sekolah ini perlu? The English course is obligatory. However, if it were optional, do you think it is important to join the course? 55 Kalau kamu merasa perlu mengikuti kursus ini, apa alasannya? Jika tidak perlu apa alasannya? If you think it is important to join the course, what is the reason? If it is not, what is the reason? To the first interview question, all the participants said that joining an English course was necessary. The second interview question dealt with the reason of why an English course was necessary. There were various answers to the second question, but which can be categorized into four categories, namely: a Knowledge Enhancer To the term “knowledge enhancer”, the writer gives a definition which consider English as only the tool for broadening the horizon of the participants’ knowledge. The answers like “menambah wawasan dalam bahasa Inggris” and “buat nglatih bahasa Inggris karena bahasa Inggris adalah bahasa internasional” were considered as putting English as a knowledge enhancer. b Fluency and Communication The term fluency and communication here means that an English course was considered as beneficial in improving the participants’ English fluency, in particular the speaking ability which was intertwined with the communication skill. The answers like “untuk memperlancar bahasa Inggris”, “bisa berbicara bahasa Inggris dengan orang- orang luar” and “pengen pergi ke luar negeri” were put under this category. The answer of “ingin pergi ke luar negeri” was not consider as future study because there was no clear or specific information of the purpose of the act of going abroad. c Future Study 56 The category of future study was indicated by the answers like: “ingin menjadi arsitek”, “ingin melanjutkan study ke Paris” and “untuk keperluan kuliah”. d Job Some of the participants stated that job was the reason why they wanted to learn English and thus joining the English course held by the school. It was indicated by the answers like: “supaya bisa lebih mudah cari kerja”, “bahasa Inggris sangat diperlukan di dunia kerja” and “kalau gak bisa bahasa Inggris gak laku”. The questionnaires spread to nine course participants were also complementary information to those which was collected by interviews. Upon distributing the questionnaires, the writer had prepared some questions related to the internal motivation on joining the English course, they are: Apakah bahasa Inggris penting bagimu? Mengapa? Do you think English is important? Apakah mempelajari bahasa Inggris itu perlu bagimu? Mengapa? Do you think that learning English is necessary for you? Apakah mengikuti kursus bahasa Inggris bila hal itu tidak wajib yang diadakan oleh sekolah itu perlu? Mengapa? Do you think that joining the English course held by the school, if it were optional, is necessary? Why? Apabila sekolah tidak menyediakan kursus bahasa Inggris, apakah kamu akan mengikuti kursus bahasa Inggris di tempat lain? Mengapa? 57 Would you go to any other English courses if the school had not held an English course? To the first questionnaire’s question all the respondents said that English was important. There were two reasons why English was important, namely for job opportunities and broaden their connection as English is an international language. To the second question, all the respondents stated that learning English was considered as necessary for them. There were four categorized answers of why learning English was necessary, namely for job opportunities, broaden their connection, knowledge building, and because English was considered as difficult. All the respondents also stated that joining the English course held by the school, even if it were optional, was necessary. There were four categorized answers for this question: knowledge building, English acquisition, job and affordability. Six respondents said that they would find another English course if the school had not held an English course. Most of them gave the reason of seeking another English course was because they wanted to acquire English. However, two of the respondents said that they would not go to any other English courses if there were no English course in the school, because they considered English as less important compared to the other subjects and that the school had already held English as a curricular subject. One of the respondents was in hesitation of joining another English course due to financial limitation. 2 External Factors There were actually only one interview question which related to finding the external factors which motivating the course participants in joining the 58 English course. However, some question related to internal motivation and the participants’ feeling during the courses had also revealed the external factors on the participants’ motivation. The question of “Apakah menurut kamu lingkungan belajar memengaruhi proses belajar bahasa Inggris sel ama kursus ini?” Do you think that the learning environment hugely affected the learning process during the course? was straightly intended to reveal the external factors of the participants’ motivation. To the question presented in the previous paragraph, all the interviewees said “yes” or in other words the surroundings really affected the learning process during the courses they involved themselves into. There were some conditions or circumstances which were considered as external factors affecting the learning process. Furthermore, the factors can be classified as supporting and discouraging factors. Those supporting factors are: the small size of the class which is easy to maintain, the tutors were funny and relax, and the high solidarity among the peers. On the other hand, the discouraging factors are: the uncomfortable classroom with broken air conditioners, the peers’ lack of willingness in doing the course’ assignments, the noisy class with little attempt from the tutors to maintain the situation, the domination of Bahasa Indonesia in classroom’s interaction and the displeasure of English. Other questions on the participants’ feeling in joining the course have also revealed some supporting factors to their motivation. Some interviewees mentioned th e tutors’ ability in bringing in new things to the class and the connection between the course with the English as a curricular subject as the 59 factors which supported them joining the course. The interviewees has also mentioned less stressful feeling when they were realizing that it was only an extracurricular course as one of the factors that encourage them in joining the course. The questionnaires gave additional information on the external factors which encouraged them to join the course. The questionnaire question to reveal the external factors supportive to participants’ involvement to the course was: “Apakah hal-hal yang membantumu selama mengikuti kursus bahasa Inggris yang diadakan oleh sekolah” What are supporting things encouraging you to join the course held by the school? There were only two items as the responses to the question, namely the professional tutors and the appropriate facilities. b. The T utors’ Opinions on the Course Participants’ Motivation The course participants’ motivation was paramount to the success of the course’ process. However, tutors’ opinions on the course participants’ motivation never lose its urgency since by considering the course participants’ motivation could the tutors conduct contextual teaching process beneficial for the course participants’ progress in acquiring English. Whether the course participants’ motivation in joining the English course was high or low could be indicated from their enthusiasm they showed along the course activities. The tutors’ opinions on the course participants’ motivation could be traced by this interview question about their enthusiasm: 60 Dari pandangan bapakibu, apakah peserta didikpara siswa antusias dalam mengikuti kursus bahasa Inggris ini? Kalau “ya” mengapa, dan kalau “tidak” mengapa? In your opinion, did the course participants enthusiastically join the English course? To this interview question, the interviewed tutors said that some of the course participants were enthusiastically joined the course due to preparation for the higher grades, while they kept telling the importance of English for their future. However, the course participants’ motivation in joining the English course was also influenced by external factors.
