49 whether the tutors have also realized what their students wanted from the course
they conducted. A matched perception between the course participants and the tutors would be a beneficial support to the whole learning process. The tutors’
opinions on the course participants’ expectation would, in other case, their
compassion and emphaty towards the learning process in general, and to the course participants in particular.
a. The Course P
articiants’ Expectation on Joining the English Course
There were two interview questions related to the course participants’ expectation. Those two interview questions represent two different emphases
concerning the course pa rticipants’ expectation, namely the course personal
expectation on joining the course and the course participants’ expectation on the process of the course. Those two questions are as follows:
Apakah menurut kamu tujuan dari kamu mengikuti kursus bahasa Inggris tersebut sudah tercapai?
Do you think you have met your own expectation by joining the course? Proses belajar seperti apa yang menurut kamu akan sangat membantu
kamu dalam menikmati kursus dan akhirnya membantu kamu dalam menguasai bahasa Inggris?
What kind of learning process do you think will be the most engaging for you in joining the course and thus helping you in acquiring English?
The first question concerns with the participants’ expectation on the course in general. Out of six interviewees, five interviewees said that they did not
meet their expectation yet. There are some students’ expectation recorded from this question, namely using English fluently and confidently, appropriate
50 pronunciation, sufficient vocabularies, good grammar knowledge, and English
text understanding. One interviewee stated that the course needs more improvement in order to meet the participants’ expectation. One interviewee
stated that she has met her expectation which was indicated by the speaking ability improvement.
The second question concerns with the participants’ expectation concerning the learning process they thought as engaging, make them willingly
involve to the course. To this question there were some responses mentioning some techniques they thought to be auxiliary tools for the learning process,
namely the use of music, videos and games, the use of question and answer technique, the use of story-telling, note taking some unfamiliar words, telling an
experience in front of the class, freedom on choosing the learning materials and emphasizing on speaking.
The questionnaire has also contributed some additional information on the participants’ expectation to the course in general. The questionnaire question for
this topic was:
“Apakah harapanmu dalam mengikuti kursus bahasa Inggris yang diselenggarakan sekolah?”
What are your expectations in joining the English course held by the school?.
The answers to the question have been classified into three general terms of course participants’ expectation. These classified answers were derived from
the classification which was done with the data articulated in Bahasa Indonesia.
