To sum up the results of the questionnaire, it is clearly shown that when the students learned English using a medium, they were more excited and motivated.
Moreover, in this 21
st
century learning almost all students perceived that they could access internet easily, so it helped some students to do their assignments effectively.
From the various educational websites provided in the internet, this was the first time for the students to use Edmodo and only a few of students who have ever used
it before. Even though that was the first time for the students to operate Edmodo, they viewed that it was a safe and an interesting learning medium.
Furthermore, the students agreed that they could access Edmodo easily. It also assisted them to have a long distance discussion with their teacher. So, they did
not need to come to school or do it in the same room. Even though the students were in the home, they still kept in touch with their teacher easily. Moreover, almost all
students also noticed the easiness of Edmodo. It was seen when they could check their score directly after they finished doing their assignments. As a result, it
motivated the half of students to learn English more and Edmodo also aided almost all students in developing their writing skill.
In addition, because of other students’ comment on their writing, it made them improve their writing better. Therefore, Edmodo was an effective medium for
the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Yogyakarta to improve their writing skill. Combining with the results of the interview, one of the interviewees said
that Edmodo was effective, if all the media such as laptopcomputer and internet connection were provided well student 1. Another student also stated that it was
effective enough but it also needed the role of teacher to remind the students to do PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

the assignments given student 2. Then, it was different with student 6 who said that the effectiveness of using Edmodo depended on what skill that was going to be
trained. If it was only writing skill, the use of paper was enough. In fact, now people live in 21
st
century where technology is the central of everything, he thought Edmodo was effective enough to be used.
From the results of the test, questionnaire and interview, it can be concluded that Edmodo was an effective medium for the eighth grade students to be used in
their English class. In addition, it was more than half of students believed that Edmodo was effective to improve their writing skill, especially in writing a
narrative text. They were also aware that Edmodo brought some good impacts on their learning process. Those beneficial impacts were explained more in the next
part that it was also the answer of the second formulated problem.
C. Advantages of Edmodo
In this part, the researcher mentions the advantages of using Edmodo in students’ writing skill. The data were obtained from the questionnaires and the
interviews. From the data, it was found that:
1. Edmodo is a safe and interesting learning medium
The word safe means students are not distracted from the advertisements which are not good for their educational side ISTE, 2015. Besides, Edmodo is
protected, if teachers made a group for the class, the member who did not join the group could not see the activities happened in the group. The privacy of the group

is safe and protected ISTE, 2015. As a result, there were 94 students who felt this advantage. Moreover, Edmodo was also an interesting learning medium for the
students. While the researcher was doing the interview with 6 students, they gave some opinions toward their interest in Edmodo.
“I liked Edmodo, the learning process was better. However, I thought it would be more interesting like the others E-learning that provided a learning
game. But I liked Edmodo student 2. ”
“The same as Tsania St.2, Edmodo was good. After we were given a material, we could deepen our knowledge by doing some assignments to know how
far we could understand the material student 3. ” As what Luaran 2012 states in
chapter two that Edmodo can serve some features like quizzes, assignments and many more for the students in order to assess students’ understanding about the
material. Therefore, it can be concluded that almost all the students liked Edmodo
because it was safe and protected educational site for the students. In addition, it was an interesting learning medium because the students can assess their
understanding by doing some assignments provided.
2. Edmodo can help students have discussion with the teacher outside the
classroom easily
From the questionnaire results, it is shown that 80 students agreed that Edmodo could help students discuss their learning problems with the teacher easily.
Moreover, from the interview, student 1 also stated that she could access Edmodo PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

everywhere, there was no limited time. It is also supported by Bay ne’s theory that
through Edmodo, students and teachers can have discussion online. When it is done online, it means the students and teacher can talk about learning problems
everywhere and every time. So, even though students are not in the classroom, they can ask about learning materials through Edmodo.
Another student also added that by using Edmodo, he could give comments on
other students’ work and improve his task better. For example when they had to make an essay and they only had a teacher in the school, it means they had to come
to the school. However, if they used Edmodo, they could directly ask to be corrected by the teacher student 2. From the research done by Kara 2016, she also agreed
that through Edmodo, the teacher can give feedback for the students online, so the students do not need to meet the teacher at the school see figure 4.2. The figure
4.2 shows about student’s writing and the feedback given by the teacher. From the figure 4.2, the teacher perceived that her writing was good enough
but she did not realize that she made one grammar mistake. It was about the use of modal verb in the sentence. She wrote the modal verb of would followed by verb
ing. There, the researcher informed her to revise the verb ing into verb 1. Then, after checking the comments, the student revised her writing. The revised version is
shown in the figure 4.3. In this context, the researcher did not need to come to the students directly to give some feedback. It was done online during the learning
process. Also the researcher did not need to come to each student and check their work. Students could focus on another activity which was commenting on other
students’ work. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

In the revised version, the student had changed what the teacher had said in the feedback. It can be seen clearly that the student could improve her writing skill
through the feedback given by the teacher.

3. Edmodo can help students comment on other students’ work effectively
Through giving comments, the students were more active in writing. It is clear that Edmodo can be a medium for students to develop their writing skill. Even
Thompson agreed that Edmodo is a good tool for students to improve their writing skill, grammar and language practice. It was proven from the activities happened
during the research, the researcher asked the students to write a narrative text and to give comments on students’ work. They were so enthusiastic and they were so
active to do it. As Thompson n.d states comments could help the students to develop their grammar knowledge. It was shown in the figure 4.4.
Figure 4.4 Students’ comments
After both students read the story written in Edmodo, they found that the writer forgot to change some verbs 1 into verbs 2. Those comments are related to
grammatical construction. So, if they did not understand about the use of grammar, they would not give such comments. Thus, by giving comments students could
practice their grammar knowledge. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI
