Action Case Research in Sanata Dharma University Context

• Supporting the students to obtain higher order outcome by giving suggestion for their curiosity of applying their experiences. • Trying to support the student online through encouraging, giving direction, and guiding the students so not to lose focus. • Trying to provide Internet access facility in Sanata Dharma University with some limitation. Some of the guideline were difficult to be followed considering the limitation of time and distance, such as: • Supporting the awareness of the students in collaborative learning concerning independent and voluntary behaviour for their first experience in Web based teaching and learning technology due to virtual environment without face-to-face contact. • Providing enough time for the students to obtain experience of the usage of Web based teaching and learning technology due to the limitation of provided time for the research. • Providing metacognitive support due to the limitation of time. • Providing opportunity to build mental model due to the limitation of time. • Supporting technical inquiry and motivating discipline through face-to-face due to the limitation of distance, however the researcher has asked the college lecturer to give face-to-face support.

1.28. Action Case Research in Sanata Dharma University Context

This second action case research used an interpretivist analysis in order to investigate and describe in a rich fashion the nature of Web based teaching and learning technology in practise. A qualitative strategy was used considering the research has a descriptive and exploratory focus, although a quantitative strategy also was used as complement the result. In this research, a simple Introduction of Database System module online was built and tried to deliver teaching to some volunteer students. Considering that Indonesian language was used to deliver teaching in traditional methods, Indonesian language was also used to build the module and to communicate in this module. In order to find volunteer students, supports was requested from one of his college lecturers, which was teaching a module at Informatic Engineering, Sanata Dharma University. Then she offered the chance to try Web based teaching and learning technology to her students in her module. The researcher found 13 volunteer students who registered to join with the research. In order to find experiences from lecturer’s perspective, some college lecturers in Informatic Engineering department were also asked to participate in this research. The research chronology in detail is given in Appendix E. Observation and necessary intervention were conducted in order to deliver the module effectively. This research combined observation of the course with questionnaire and some information based on some comments from students through email or the Discussion Board facilities. The researcher believes that the use of observation in the natural setting providing a wider and richer perspective on accounts of experience. Considering the limitation of observation from distance and the missing interview technique due to distance research and, the college lecturer has been chosen to help to observe, monitor, and support the research in location of research through face-to-face contact. The questionnaire was made based on the unified conceptual framework to guide the research concerning important factors of the usage of Web based teaching and learning technology. The unified conceptual framework have been described in chapter 2 which consist of Reeves’ 1997 model of WWW based learning, conversational framework by Laurillard 1993, and Lipnacks virtual team system of principles 1997. The questionnaires were focused on the students’ experience and the college lecturers’ experience in the usage of Web based teaching and learning technology. Considering that Indonesian language was used to deliver teaching, Indonesian language was also used to build the questionnaires, however in the analysis, the questionnaire results were interpreted in English language. These questionnaires were distributed after the students completing the module. From 13 students who have registered as volunteer for this research, 12 volunteer students replied invitation emails from the researcher and the researcher has sent user name and password which was required to access Blackboard Web based teaching and learning technology for each volunteer student. The researcher also received 9 reply emails of the invitation from the volunteer lecturers and they also given username and password to access Blackboard. Although there were 21 volunteers who had access to Blackboard, until the end of the research, only three returned questionnaires from the volunteer students and one returned questionnaire from the college lecturer, who helped researcher in conducting research at Sanata Dharma University, were received. Although not all of questionnaire was returned, the returned questionnaires were considered very valuable, as according to researcher’s observation, the returned questionnaires were from the participants who were considered active using this Web based teaching and learning technology. One of the students was active after the first online together session on 2 December 2000 as he found difficulty due to misunderstanding about case-sensitive password. These activities could be tracked using the Course Statistics facility from Blackboard Web based teaching and learning environment. The number of hits before, on, and until the first online together session on 2 December 2000 processed from tracking activity facility on Blackboard system were depicted in Table 5.2. Table 5.2 The Numbers of Hits on Blackboard before, on, and until 2 December 2000 Participant Before 2 Des 2000 0:00 am On 2 Des 2000 5:26 am Third session Until 2 Des 2000 5:25 am Agung, Albert College lecturer 4 44 48 Ariananda, Dony College lecturer 11 11 Bell, Frances Dissertation supervisor 14 14 Chen, Hartono Student 148 627 775 Darmawan, Budi Reseacher, Instructur 2579 493 3072 Gunawan, Ridowati College lecturer 385 247 632 Prabantara, C. The experience of the participant were considered valuable to gain knowledge concerning how Web based teaching and learning technology help or support to deliver teaching if it was to be implemented in Sanata Dharma University. Considering the limitation of time provided to conduct the research, the research was planned to be conducted in a short duration with focusing on collaboration and teacher support categories from the unified framework, although the other categories were also discussed in light. When the researchers was planning to prepare a schedule for the research, he found difficulty in allocating time to conduct the research. It happened because this research was conducted when the volunteer students were actively studying in Sanata Dharma University. Furthermore at the same time, there was standardisation examinations ujian persamaan conducted by the government for students in a private university. For information, the object of the research took place in a private university in Indonesia, and in certain time the student must follow a standardisation examination conducted by government. After the standardisation examination, there were also examinations from the University in the following week. Considering the finding founded in the first action case concerning workload pressure affecting how the members would use the technology and the limitation of time which was provided for the research, the research was rescheduled after standardisation examination had been done at Sanata Dharma University. The research was planned for two weeks duration consisting of three sessions, i.e. beginning with one week for an introduction to the Blackboard facilities and learning the material, then giving a task goal supported by asynchronous discussion through the Discussion Board facility in the second week, and in the last session online together at the same time to solve a simple practical case from the task goal for about four hours in the Basic Computer laboratory. Based on the problem found at the end of the third session, an additional fourth session was added to gain more understanding.
