Course Background at Sanata Dharma University

Chapter 5 Result and Data Analysis

in Sanata Dharma University Context Guided by the guidelines see Appendix F obtained from the first action case at Salford University discussed in Chapter 4, the second action case research was conducted at Sanata Dharma University context. As the second action case research took place in a different organisation context, not all of the guidelines are used with considering some factors, which may affect different result in different context, depicted in Table 3.7. In this chapter, the result of the research is analysed guided by the unified conceptual framework described in Chapter 2. This chapter begins with a description about the course background in Sanata Dharma University. In the next section the action case research in Sanata Dharma University context is discussed with considering the guidelines, which is appropriate with this context. In the following section the research data is analysed based on chronologies and categories in the unified conceptual framework.

1.26. Course Background at Sanata Dharma University

The second action case research was conducted at Sanata Dharma University in Indonesia where the researcher was teaching Informatic Engineering undergraduate program. Sanata Dharma University was a private university. In a private university in Indonesia, the students must pay themselves the tuition fee without support from government. In Informatic Engineering department, there were 10 permanent lecturers http:www.usd.ac.idfakultasteknikft.htm , last accessed 16 March 2001 and more than 500 students divided in five academics year in an email from course tutor, received 19 March 2001. The lecturers mainly used traditional methods in delivering teaching. There were some modules such as Database System, Data Analysis, and Information System, in which lecturers encouraged students to work in a team in order to complete their assignments. There was a lecturer who has tried to use Web technology to support their teaching, such as using Yahoo groups. Sanata Dharma University consisted of five campuses in four different locations. University provided Internet access available for all students with 15 workstations at UPT Computer Centre UPT Pusat Komputer located at Campus II, 16 workstations at UPT Library UPT Perpustakaan located at Campus I and 20 workstations at Basic Computer laboratory laboratorium Komputer Dasar located at Campus III http:www.usd.ac.idmanajemenprasarana , last accessed 16 March 2001 . The Basic Computer laboratory located in Informatic Engineering department. All the workstations run under Windows 3.11 operating system. These Internet facilities were not free. In order to use the Internet facilities, the students must buy workstation card from UPT Library or President assistant II office. All of these Internet facilities were open in working time, Monday to Saturday. It means there was no 24 hours Internet access facility. Research on How Web-based teaching and learning technology supports or helps in delivering teaching in Sanata Dharma University was very interesting to be conducted. University of Salford supported the research by providing Blackboard application as Web based teaching and learning technology. This Blackboard application and its facility are depicted in Appendix B. When the researcher was conducting the research, he was studying at Salford University in United Kingdom. Considering the topic of the research using Internet as a medium, the researcher intended to use Internets anytime and anywhere characteristics to conduct the research from distance. In this research, as it has been depicted in Table 3.7, the researcher was the lecturer of the online module. He was also the author and the Web developer of the module. The course tutor of Informatic Engineering department in Sanata Dharma University also supported the research and the researcher obtained free Internet access facility in Basic Computer laboratory to be used for the research. Participants could use the free Internet facilities when the laboratory was not being used for teaching activity and laboratory practice. In this research, participants comprised of the students and the college lecturers.
