Integrated Level Cooperative goals Interdependent task

based teaching and learning module more often due to the virtual nature of the technology. After they finished the module, they felt the awareness of the importance for them to be self-organise I11C3, I11C4. One of the students suggested the teacher to support with face-to-face meeting to motivate self-discipline I4D6. It is likely that independent member principle was important in following Web based teaching and learning due to the nature of virtual environment, as each member should be self-organise in order to follow the module successfully. The support from the teacher was likely very important to support students to be self-discipline. 1.25.1.5.2. Shared leadership In the Course Room Discussion facility, one of the students felt free to put whatever idea. This might show the nature of online discussion Q10A1. The lecturer also joined with the discussions but she did not prevent the students expressing their idea in the Course Discussion, since it was the lecturer’s shared intention to facilitate an open discussion. Based on the researcher’s observation, the students felt free to put their interested topic in this discussion then some fellow students would put comment for that topic. The lecturer also supported us through monitoring with reminder and when necessary conducting face-to-face meeting. In this face-to-face meeting she also supported each member to have role as leader, secretary etc for a short period to prepare the module activity. It seems that shared leadership might be supported by the lecturer in Web based teaching and learning technology as each member has the same opportunity to express their idea and the fellow students will make comment for that idea.

1.25.1.5.3. Integrated Level

In this team, there was only one group, but there was two members who have different level in this discussion, the lecturer and the guest lecturer. They joint in the Course Discussion to conduct discussion. There was integrated level in this discussion, as there was opportunity to discuss with the lecturer and the guest lecturer, who was invited by the lecturer to join into the discussion. It seems that integrated level was supported more easily due to the virtual nature of this environment.

1.25.1.5.4. Cooperative goals

There were also some team’s assignments that can be included in cooperative goals. For example the authentic task, which will be explained in the section 4.3.1.6, and building Web sites about their Virtual Organising module which could be expected to add their experience as a team. Team’s assignment might be considered as a cooperative goal, which allowed the members to cooperate in a team.

1.25.1.5.5. Interdependent task

Most of students in Virtual Organising module felt that they found difficulty in co-operating and contributing I11C5, I20B1, Q20B2, I20B2, I20B3, Q20C2, I21B2. One of the student expected the other students to be interdependent task when he said In this case, everybody have to put in because not one person can expect to do the work, it is too much I20B3. It seems that self-discipline and other face-to-face modules perceived as having heavier workload by student, which has been discussed in independent member principle, might affect their willingness to contribute in the collaborative learning. When the researcher asked whether they could get the solutionanswer in web- based teaching and learning environment like what they expected when they had problemsquestion with the course material, one of the students noted I could discuss it with my classmate Q9D4. Some students also perceived the awareness of how important interdependent task was in online discussion facility I4D5, Q9A3, Q10B1, I10D1, I20A5. Considering the awareness of interdependent task for some students, it seems that Web based teaching and learning environment provides an opportunity to conduct collaborative learning successfully. In addition to this interdependent task principle, the students also conducted face-to-face meeting, which was important to support member to be interdependent task to achieve the goal. One of the students noted We all supported each other in time of difficulty especially when the group was losing focus due to the virtual nature of the module in relation to other pressures from other modules and social life Q12A2. The face-to-face meeting might provide an opportunity for each member to motivate each other to gain the awareness of interdependent task better than online.
