Paulo’s Achievement Motivation

According to Huffman, Vernoy, and Vernoy 2000: 401, intrinsic motivation refers to a desire to exhibit an action for our own sake. It means that this motivation comes from someone’s enjoyment and pleasure. There is no real reward money, certificate, or status for his work but the reward is from his heart, his satisfaction in doing something well. Paulo does his spiritual search to seek his guardian angel to grant his wish to see and speak with his guardian angel. There are no real rewards he gets. He does not want to get any reward, such as: money, certificate, or status. His motivation comes from inside his heart and his feeling that need to answer his curiosity about his guardian angel because not all people in this world believe and ever see their guardian angel. He wants to prove whether his guardian angel looks like as what he has dreamed or not.

4.2.2 Paulo’s Achievement Motivation

David C. McClelland 227 emphasizes that “doing something better” is the natural incentive for the achievement motive. It now is time to become more precise, for people can do better for all sorts of reasons—to please the teacher, to avoid criticism, to gain the approval of a loved one, or simply to get some time off from work. What should be involved in the achievement motivation is doing something better for its own sake, for the intrinsic satisfaction of doing something better. Paulo always respect his master. Since his master is a powerful magus, much experience in the magical world, Paulo often asks his master to give some advice to solve his problems. Now, Paulo’s master gives him a strange task that PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI must be done by Paulo. His master said that it is something to do to solve his problems. He gives some clues that he must go to the desert and meet Gene. Gene is a young master who has ever seen his own guardian angel. After prepare everything to do his spiritual journey, he invites his wife to accompany him during he live 40 days in the desert. After they meet Gene, there are some traditions that must be done by Paulo. It is good to invite Chris during his spiritual journey because there is a tradition that the master can not teach another master’s disciple. So, Gene teaches Paulo about the second mind through his wife. Paulo learns seriously although Gene does not teach him directly. He respects the tradition. In this case, Paulo does not want to disappoint his master and Gene. “Everything Gene told you is important,” Paulo said. “He has already seen and talked with his angel, and he is using you as a means of instructing me. He knows the power of his words, and he knows that advice not heeded is returned to its giver, losing its energy. He needs to be sure that you are interested in what he tells you.” “Well, why doesnt he show these things directly to you?” “Because there is an unwritten rule in the Tradition: A master never teaches another masters disciple. And he knows I am J.s disciple. But since he wants to be of help to me, he is using you for that purpose.” 33 They have spent some days in the desert. They learn how to survive in the desert, learn the traditions and rituals spiritual search. Gene asks them to seek The Valkyries who can help Paulo to see and speak to his guardian angel. One day, they meet The Valkyries in the desert. During their meeting there, Paulo has learned many kinds of rituals as the requirements to see and speak to his guardian angel, such as: second mind and channeling. During their meeting with The Valkyries, Paulo has to do three kinds of conditions. They are: broke the pact, PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI accept forgiveness, and make a bet. He really believes that he can see and speak to his guardian angel because he has done the two of those three conditions. Murray in Karen, Vernoy and Vernoy’s Psychology in Action 399 identified “achievement motivation as the need for success, for doing better than others, and for mastering challenging tasks”. Paulo has mastered the challenging tasks that are given by his master and The Valkyries. He had already met two of the three conditions, and almost failed with regard to the third–the simplest of them But his angels protection had prevailed, and, during the channeling…ah, how good it was to have learned to converse with the angels Now he knew that he would be able to see his angel, because he had met the third condition. “I broke a pact. I accepted forgiveness. And, today, I made a bet. I have faith, and I believe,” he said. “I believe that Valhalla knows the method for seeing ones angel.” Paulos eyes were shining. There would be no nocturnal walks, no insomnia tonight. He was absolutely certain that he was going to see his angel. Half an hour ago, he had asked for a miracle–but that was no longer important. 183-184 Murray also states the illustrative of needs; he defines the achievement motives as follows. To accomplish something difficult. To master, manipulate, or organize physical object, human beings, or ideas. To do this as rapidly and as independently as possible. To overcome obstacles and attain a high standard. To excel oneself. To rival and surpass others. To increase self- regard by the successful exercise of talent. 46 Paulo never stops to explain something about magic and mystic to his wife. He wants to convince his wife that rituals are done to make contact with the invisible world. There are many rituals in our daily life, such as: marriages, baptisms, graduation. Since he wants to seek his guardian angel, there are so many rituals and traditions that must be completed and done well. Now, Paulo is ready to the uncommon ritual. It is called Ritual That Demolishes Ritual. It is a kind of PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI Sacred Theater in which he has to play different character. He wants to accomplish something difficult because there are few magus who willing to do this kind of ritual. They use the ritual to make contact with the invisible world, to destroy the second mind, and to enter into the Extraordinary. But, for us too, the terrain we conquer becomes familiar. And we feel the need to seek out new territories. But any magus is fearful of changing the ritual. Its a fear of the unknown, or a fear that other rituals wont function as well–but it is an irrational fear, a strong one, that never disappears without some help.” “And what is the Ritual That Demolishes Rituals?” “Since a magus is unable to change their rituals, the Tradition decides to change the magus. Its a kind of Sacred Theater in which the magus has to play a different character.” 141 Murray 317 defines “need for achievement as a desire or tendency ‘to overcome obstacles, to exercise power, to strive to do something difficult as well and as quickly as possible’. Therefore , it can be emphasized that achievement motive as motive to master challenging task, to accomplish something and to do better improvement, to get greater output, to strive to do something rapidly and independently”. He was faced with the Ritual That Demolishes Rituals. A sacred moment in the life of a magus. .“ Sed nomini Tuo de Gloriam,” he said again. And in the moment that followed, he dressed himself in the role suggested by Valhalla. The Ritual That Demolishes Rituals began to unfold. Nothing else was important–only that unknown path, that frightened woman at his feet, and a secret that had to be won from her. 148 When Paulo want to try to do the Ritual That Demolishes Ritual, Chris asks him to explain why he must do this kind of ritual. Chris only wants to suggest him to become a common people who do not do some strange rituals to make contact with the God or other invisible things. Paulo wants to excel another magus’ capabilities. He wants to do something better and settle the difficult tasks PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI that are given by his master and The Valkyries well. He has to complete all of the requirements needed to see his guardian angel. “What is all this?” Chris suddenly shouted. “Why such dramatics, why so much ritual, why all of this just to see an angel? Isnt it enough to speak with the angel? Why dont you do as everyone else does: simplify the way we make contact with God and with what is sacred in this world?” There was no response. Paulo felt that Chris was ruining everything. 145 Paulo’s achievement motivation can be seen through his effort to accomplish difficult tasks, to please his master J, to do something better than other magus, and to master all of the challenging tasks. It can be concluded that Paulo has a high achievement motivation. He works very hard, spending all his time to accomplish his goal and also makes a better improvement in doing some rituals and respects all of the rules of the Tradition.
