51 supported Vrooman 1967 idea saying that since thinking is sorting out and
giving order to ideas, one must find the sentence structure that establishes the proper thought relationship of ideas. And as the nature of Research Paper Writing
report itself which requires a great deal of scientific language, complex sentence construction, those containing multiple clause structure especially, will be
frequently found out. The number of complex sentences in each of the types, presented in the table above, would correspond to the number presented in the
next tables throughout this chapter. Upon identifying students’ complex sentences according to the type, the
writer identified students’ grammatical and ungrammatical complex sentence according to type.
3. Students’ mastery on complex sentence type one
Before conducting the research, the writer had given certain criteria to grade the students’ mastery. The criteria given were based on the English Education
Study Programme’s criteria of scoring. Here, the students’ mastery could be considered “Very Good,” equal to an A, if they could at least reach 80
grammaticality, “Good,” equal to a B, for 70 grammaticality at the least, “Fair,” equal to a C, for 60 grammaticality at the least, and “Poor,” equal to a D, for
lower than 60 of grammaticality.

This study found 247 grammatical complex sentences type one. It was nearly 80 of all written sentences in this type. More specifically, this study also
found out that eleven of twenty four participants obtained “very good,” while five participants obtained “good,” leaving “fair” and “poor,” each of which was
obtained by four students. Even, four participants of those obtaining “very good” obtained an excellent result with zero mistakes.
From the result, the writer could state that students’ mastery on complex sentence type one is relatively good enough.
