CHAPTER V CONCLUSIONS, IMPLICATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter consists of three parts; they are the conclusions, the implications, and the recommendations. The conclusions present the major findings of the research and their limitations. The implications deal with the involvement of the study in education. The recommendations present some suggestions for students in the English Language Education Study Program and future researchers.

A. Conclusions

In this part, the researcher divides the conclusions into two parts. The first is the features of women’s language used by Gracie Hart in Miss Congeniality movie. The second is about the factors that might influence the changes of Hart’s speech from femininity into masculinity. The researcher used discourse analysis as the method to analyze Hart’s speech. Moreover, the researcher used movie transcripts to analyze the data. Then, the researcher as human instrument involved significantly in collecting the data needed for the research. Based on the findings and discussions in chapter IV, there are six women’s language features used by Gracie Hart in her speech. Those features that appear in Hart’s speech are hypercorrect grammar, intensifiers, fillers, rising intonations, lexical hedges, and tag questions. The total of wome n’s language features which are found in Hart’s speech are 51. The percentage of hypercorrect grammar is 34.7 that 62 appear the most in the movie which is used to show good behavior in society and imply that she has better grammatical English. For intensifier’s percentage, there is 22.5 which is used to strengthen speaker’s message so that the addressee would listen to the speaker. The percentage of fillers is 22.5 which is used to show the speaker’s uncertainty and also to give a pause in order to let the speaker think before speaking. The percentage of rising intonations is 12.3 and the function of this feature is to emphasize the significant word to obtain information and confirmation from the addressee. The percentage of lexical hedges is 4.1 which is used to weaken the strength of assertion that could offend the addressee. The percentage of tag questions is 4.1 and this feature is used to express speaker’s feeling of uncertainty. On the other hand, the researcher did not find the features of emphatic stress, empty adjectives, precise color term, superpolite form, and avoidance of strong swear word in Hart’s speech. However, Hart sometimes uses swear words when she gets annoyed. It could be seen that not all of women’s language features are used by Hart in her speech. The second conclusion is drawn based on the findings that there are three factors influence the changes of Hart’s speech from femininity to masculinity. They are community of speech, women in the profession, and psychological approach. When Hart has interaction with the other police officers who are mostly men, her experience will be created by her participation in activities and communities of practice that are particular to her place in the social order. In these communities of practice, she will develop an identity and the linguistic practices to build her identity. 63 In community of practice, she often expresses her identity through curse words she uttered. Besides, women in workplace especially in masculine workplace, Hart often adopted a “bureaucratic” interactional style, emotionless, speech pattern, and efficient interactional style associated with masculinity. Therefore, psychological approach appeared to eliminate of the old stereotype that women are a subordinate group. Those three factors might influence the changes of Hart’s speech.

B. Implications

This research can be implemented as a contribution in education. English learners need to acquire sociolinguistics competence through language especially women’s language. Through this research, English learners learn about language and its background so that they will know that language also refers to individual’s sex, characteristics, and status in society. In accordance with teaching and learning, women’s language is considered one of the strategies to maintain good communication to acquire a proper use of English. English learners must be aware of manners in a conversational context. English learners should be able to use the appropriate language and effective communication. Besides, the way English learners use language also should show politeness. They should apply politeness in order to improve communication strategy and develop good relationship between fellow English learners and teachers. Moreover, 64 politeness can be used during speaking activities in the class. Both teachers and English learners can employ politeness strategy by considering the situation.

C. Recommendations

In this part, the researcher gives some recommendations to English Language Education Study Program students, lecturers, and future researchers. First, students in the English department can use the result of this research to enrich their knowledge about women’s language. Moreover, this study can also be used in Sociolinguistics class since women ’s language is studied in the class. Besides, they can also learn how to use language by selecting correct and appropriate words in order to improve communication strategy. Second, lecturers who teach sociolinguistics can use this study as an authentic material in the classroom. Since this research provides some examples of wo men’s language and some factors that might change women’s language, it can broaden the teacher’s knowledge and reference to deliver the information about women’s language in their teaching. At last, future researchers especially those who plan to conduct research under the same topic can use this study as a reference. It is expected that future researchers can further investigate the influence which might change women’s language from femininity into masculinity. Moreover, it can be better for future researchers to find out and analyze the process of the changes of women’s language. Also, this study is 65 useful for future researchers to enrich their knowledge about the women’s language. Hopefully, this recommendation can improve this study.
