Charles Serman, The State, stated that Gwen Hunter’s characters are solidly drawn and appealing. The readers’ curiousities are aroused by the rhythm
of Gwen Hunter’s writing. Her ending should leave most readers in good spirit. http:www.Bellarosabooks.combetrayal-rev.htm, accessed on November 27,
2006 Toby Bromberg, Romantic Times, said that Betrayal is a story of passion
and danger that takes the reader into the heart of a family that is pure evil. Readers will find themselves sympathizing and empathizing. They will feel like they are
parts of the story itself. It is because Gwen Hunter creates the story naturally. http:www.Bellarosabooks.combetrayal-rev.htm, accessed on November 27,
2007 Betrayal is a shocking tale of secrets and lies. Upon the completion of the
book she actually had felt that she had visited Louisiana and left with a thorough understanding of the word betrayal. Gwendolyn J. Brantly, affair de Coeur
Last but not least, in the back cover of the novel, says; “So begins this spellbinding, passionate novel, the story of a young girl’s
marriage into a family so monstrous that only an extraordinary woman could escape from it alive…” Hunter Gwen, Betrayal
2. 3 Theoretical Framework
The study on the influence of sexual deviation on one’s personality development gives the opportunity to analyze the influence of sexual deviation on
the personality development of the main character in Betrayal by Gwen Hunter.

Therefore, the theories of character and characterization and the theories of psychology are used to answer the problems formulated in the previous chapter.
The first problem is the understanding about how the author describes the major characters in her novel. In order to solve them, I use the theories of
personality suggested by Hurlock, Craig, and Pikunas. Since someone’s character is a part of his her personality, then I also use theory of character and
characterization by Abrams, Perrine, and Murphy. These theories help me to understand the characteristics of the main character in the Betrayal by Gwen
Hunter. Then, I will relate the theories from Hurlock and Craig to Nicolette’s personality development. The theory of development process from Pikunas will
give explanation on how some factors can influence the development process. Therefore, I also use the theory of sexual deviation from Rosen et al. and
from Baron in order to help in understanding kinds of sexual deviation. Here, in the novel, incest as a subtype of sexual deviations becomes the phenomenon of
sexual deviation suffered by Nicolette’s husband. Then, her husband’s sexual deviation has influenced her personality development.
The psychological theories from Hurlock, Craig and Pikunas that discuss personality, development, and the factors that influenced human development will
be used to analyze the influence of sexual deviation of Nicolette’s husband on her personality development.

CHAPTER 3 METHODOLOGY
This chapter is divided into four sections. The first is Subject Matter, which contains the statement of the work of literature I analyze in this study. The
second is Approach, which contains approach I use in this study. The third is Procedures, which talk about the steps I take in doing the analysis, and the last is
the Organization of the Study.
3.1 Subject Matter
The subject matter in this study is Betrayal. It is one of the most popular novels by Gwen Hunter. I use the novel Betrayal that was published in 1994 by
Pocket Books. The book itself consists of 372 pages. There are some characters in Betrayal, but the main character is Nicolette
Dazincourt DeLande or Nicolette. Other characters are Montgomery Beauregard DeLande, Sonja, Desma Collette or Dessie, Dora Shalene or Shalene, Adrian
Paul, Miles Justin, Richard, and Philippe. The setting in this novel is in the 1970s and the place is in South Louisiana, New Orleans.
Betrayal is an interesting novel full of bitterness. It is a story of a young woman who is married to a wealthy, prominent, and charming man whose family
has the power to control the politics, the law, and the money in Louisiana. A happy marriage which she has dreamed never comes true. It turns out; she has
married a man whom she does not know at all. Her loving, romantic, and giving husband turns to be a cruel, volatile, and distant husband. A man, whom she really
