CHAPTER IV RESEARCH FINDINGS

This chapter presents the research findings and the discussion based on the analysis of data collected from the implementation of Contextual Teaching and Learning to improve students’ comprehension of descriptive text in two cycles. Related to the research finding, it can be seen in three parts; data description, data analyzing and data interpretation.

A. The Description of the Data

1. Findings of the Preliminary Study

a. The Result of Pre Interview

In this study, the writer conducted pre interview with unstructured interview. It held on Tuesday, 24 th of August 2010 started at 9.30 a.m. to 10.00 a.m. here the writer asked some questions to the teacher. The questions talk about general condition in English class, the problem have been faced the students in reading material, and the kinds of strategies that conducted by the teacher before previously implementation of Classroom Action Research CAR. The interview began with question related general condition in English class and problem have been faced the students in reading skill. Then the teacher said some students like those that English because it is fun and some of them did not like because they though English is difficult. Then about the problem has faced by her student mainly about reading 39 skill, because they did not understand the passage meaning, so they did not answer the question correctly. In this semester, they have faced recount text and descriptive text said the teacher. Then the writer asked about how many KKM Criteria of Minimum Completeness that concerning with school program. The students should get 70 seventy score in English subject. And about the methodology that the teacher have done, she tough it still less for this era, because she have taught using method traditionally.

b. The Result of Pre Observation

Based on the observation was conducted by the writer on Tuesday, 24 th August 2010. It is to observe the process of teaching learning in students and teachers’ reading activities before implementation the action. It held at VIII Grade SMP Bakti Mulya 400 Jakarta. There are 23 students in the class and the teaching learning process started at 07.00 A.M up to 09.00 A.M. In this class, the teacher use teacher center during the activity because the teacher actually dominated the classroom activity then it made the students passive in the class and less motivation to learn reading material. Generally, the teacher read the text individually then the students repeat after her, after that, if they did not know about the meaning of difficult vocabulary, the teacher asked them to check it into dictionary. This activity made the students bored in English class because the teacher center method of teaching learning in reading activity. In addition, when the teacher taught descriptive text, she asked the students to read carefully and silently, after that she asked them to translate the passage into Bahasa Indonesia. The teacher just gives less explanation about descriptive text. So, when the teacher asked students to do the exercise about schematic structure and linguistic features of descriptive text. They did not understand about that. Consequently, the students had had less motivation in reading and made their behavior decreasing.

c. The Result of Pre Questionnaire

The researcher delivered the questionnaire to the students in two sessions; before implementation of the action and after the implementation the action. Then, she compared the result to know whether the student felt satisfied with the method and weather this study was success or not. The pre questionnaire was conducted on August 24 th , 2010. Referring to the result of the data, generally it was found that students still have low motivation in learning reading descriptive text and most of them have difficulties in comprehending the structures of descriptive text. The result on the questionnaire revealed that from the first statement 57 13 students did not feel satisfied with their English score and only 43 10 students who feel satisfied. To statement number 2, only 30 7 students like to learn reading English and 70 16 students did not like to learn English Reading English. Relating to the statement number 3, 78 18 students said that they did not feel motivated in learning reading descriptive text, it means that only 22 5 students who feel motivated of the material. For the statement number 4, only 35 8 students can understand reading descriptive text easily and 65 15 students are hardly to understand. Then for the statement number 5, there are 65 15 students have the difficulty to understand descriptive text meaningfully and only 35 8 students who didn’t have the difficulty. Next, for the statement number 6, it showed that only 30 7 students could understand the characteristic of descriptive text. The response for the next statement, in number 7, showed that 43 10 students could do the exercise was given by the teacher about descriptive text. To the statement number 8, there are 83 19 students didn’t do the exercise individually. Responding to the next statement number 9, showed that 65 15 students do the English exercise in group. The responses to the last statement, number 10, showed that only 13 3 students use descriptive text in their life and 87 20 students didn’t use it in their life.
