how far the students’ achievement after giving technique of contextual teaching and learning CTL at the end of this cycle.
There were some activities conducting in this phase. First, the writer helped by the collaborator designed lesson plan for the first cycle.
Second, the writer prepared materials and media. The materials took from the English text book, also the writer made hand out for the students. The
media used were laptop, jumble paragraph, colored marker and paper. Next, the writer and collaborator determined the criteria of success. The
criteria of success were 70 of the students’ writing score achieved the
Minimum Mastery Criterion- Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal KKM of English 70 or above and 70 of students participated in reading class.
Besides, the writer prepared the instruments for research such as: posttest 1, observation notes, and camera to take a picture of the action.
b. Acting
The action of the cycle 1 was done on August 31
st
and September 2
nd
2010. After making lesson plan, the writer as the teacher implemented the teaching learning process based on it. Next the teacher started to teach
the materials that will be learned by students, she began to ask students to read the text silently. Then, some students were asked to read the text
loudly. Next, the teacher explained about the characteristics of descriptive text included the schematic structures and the language features that
contained in descriptive text. After explaining, the teacher gave them some questions based on the text including main idea, supporting details, and
schematic structures of the text. Then, the teacher divided students into 5 groups which consisted of five or six students in each group. Then, the
teacher gave them jumbled paragraphs to be arranged into a good passage in order to make sure that students understood how to analyze the
schematic structures concerning identification and description of the text. Next, students were asked to answer the questions based on the text and to
write the language features in the text. Those tasks were done by students with their group.
c. Observing
In this phase, the real teacher as the observer had a duty to monitor all activities in the classroom. She found many problems in that classroom
likes the student active or passive during teaching learning process, the student’s didn’t hear teacher’s explanation carefully, the teacher explained
too fast, so the students didn’t understand about the material.
Furthermore, the observer found some students who actively in answering the teacher’s question correctly related to the schematic
structure and linguistic feature of descriptive text. After teaching learning process finished, in this observing phase was also carried out the posttest 1
exactly on the second action of the first cycle to measure how well the students’ reading comprehension of descriptive text that had been studied.
Based on the result of the posttest 1, the data showed that the mean score of pretest was 62.39. There were 8 students who passed the Minimum
Mastery Criterion – Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal KKM is 70.
Meanwhile the other 15 students did not pass that criterion.
d. Reflecting
The writer and the teacher concluded about implementing the action. Then, they tried to modify the action in order students more
comprehend in reading descriptive text and in order 70 of students in the class could pass the KKM because in the result of posttest 1 showed only
62.39 of students who passed the KKM. Moreover, based on the result of the first cycle, the writer and the
teacher felt satisfied enough because t hey were able to improve students’
reading comprehension of descriptive text, although not 70 of students passed the KKM. Besides, the students could understand the material
easily by using Contextual Teaching and Learning method. That method
could help them to share the ideas in comprehending of descriptive text and analyzing schematic structures of descriptive text. Besides, there are
some students didn’t focus in teaching learning process and some of them just passive during the lesson, so they still confuse about the material and
didn’t do the exercise well. From the reflecting phase above, the teacher and the writer must
have more efforts to develop students’ reading comprehension of descriptive text by using Contextual Teaching and Learning method. It
was needed to improve again in the next cycle. This effort was done in the next lesson plan of cycle 2.
3. Findings of Cycle II
a. Planning
The planning phase of second cycle was implemented into a lesson plan. In this phase, the writer modified the lesson planning based on the
result of reflecting phase in the cycle 1. The lesson plan which was used still Contextual Teaching and Learning method in learning schematic
structure and linguistic feature of descriptive text. In this planning, the writer focused in give re-explaining and some exercises about schematic
structure and linguistic features of descriptive text. It was caused to ensure the students’ reading comprehension concerning those aspects. Besides,
the writer also prepared unstructured observation sheet to make note the classroom activity during teaching learning process in acting of cycle 2
and she also prepared the posttest 2.
b. Acting
The action of the cycle two was done on September 21
st
and 23
rd
2010. After reviewing the previous lesson, the teacher got students to read the text and gave them some minutes to identify and to look up the
