result of the data. The discussion is based on “can Contextual Teaching and Learning improve the students’ comprehension in reading descriptive
text and how does it improve their comprehension in reading descriptive text.
The finding of the study proved that Contextual Teaching and Learning can improve the students’ comprehension in reading descriptive
text. It can be seen from the observation, questionnaire, interview, and result of test.
1. Data Observation
From the data observation, the data gained from unstructured observation showed that there were any improvements of the students’
participation in the teaching-learning process for each meeting. However, after the students have taught using Contextual Teaching
and Learning, they have motivated and active in teaching learning process. It is because of CTL make them easier and enjoyable in learning reading
descriptive text.
2. Data of Questionnaire
The result of questionnaire result showed that the implementation of this method got positive responses from students in their teaching-
learning process of reading. It was proven that 87 of the students showed good or positive responses toward the implementation of Contextual
Teaching and Learning method in teaching reading descriptive text. Besides, after the implementation the students could motivate in teaching
learning English, especially reading descriptive text.
3. Data of Interview
The data gained from the pre interview with the English teacher indi
cated that the students’ comprehension in reading was poor because the students had some difficulty to understand the text, and the st
udents’ participation in reading class was not too active. Consequently, it needed
to do the innovation in teaching reading. The writer suggested implementing Contextual Teaching and Learning method in teaching
reading. After conducting the action, the English teacher gave positive responses toward the action. The English teacher felt satisfied with the
improvement made by the students focus on comprehension and their participation.
4. Data of Test
From the test, it was known the students’ average score of pretest is
55.21. It is the students’ reading score before they use Contextual Teaching and Learning method. Meanwhile, the class percentage which
passes the KKM is 13.04. It means that that there are only 3 students who are able to pass the KKM 70 and there are 20 students who are not
able to pass the KKM. Furthermore, the mean score in the posttest of cycle 1 is 62.39. It
means that there are some students’ score improvement from the previous test pretest, that is 7.18 62.39
– 55.21 or 13 It is not enough to reach the research target and still need to be developed. Meanwhile, the class
percentage which passes the KKM in posttest 1 is 34.78. It shows there are 8 students who pass the KKM and there are 15 students whose score
still under KKM. It means that still needed more improvement because it could not achieve the target yet of success CAR, that is 70 or at least 16
students from the class percentage. That is why the writer and the teacher continue to the second cycle.
Next, the mean score in the posttest of second cycle is 71.95. It shows the improvement students’ score 16.74 71.95 – 62.39 from the
posttest 1 in cycle 1 62.39 or 30.32 students’ improvement in the score percentage from the pretest or 17.32 students’ improvement from the
posttest 1. Meanwhile, the class percentage which passes the KKM is 73.91. It means there are 17 students whose score pass the KKM and
there are 6 students who are under the target of KKM. This class
percentage shows some improvements 60.87 from the pretest 13.04 or posttest I 34.78 in the class percentage. The posttest of cycle II has
fulfilled the target of Classroom Action Research CAR success, which is above 70 students could pass the KKM. Automatically, it can be said
that the Classroom Action Research CAR is success and the cycle can be stopped.
The students’ improvement in the reading descriptive text from the preliminary study to the second cycle was recapped in Figure below:
