5. Method of Data Collection

The data for this study are collected using two methods of data collection. They are content analysis and questionnaire. This means that the content of the English text and its translation are analyzed to find out data relevant to the objectives of the study.

In giving code to the data, the researcher used four points of code. This step is meant to find out a particular datum in the samples. Therefore, firstly the data are numbered based on the followings:

a. Arabic Numbers (01, 02, 03 …) are employed to indicate the series of each the data.

b. Volumes in Arabic numbers are employed to indicate the volume or serie of the data.

c. Double capital letters to refer initially to the characters (SP, MJ, PP, …) are employed to indicate the characters in the “THE AMAZING

SPIDER- MAN” comics. The following list is used to determine the code: SM : Spiderman PP : Peter Parker MJ : Mary Jane AM : Aunt May ET : Electro ES : Electro‟s son PL : Police NR : Nurse

MG : Miss Grilby WV : Wolverine/Logan WS : Woman and son DO : Doctor Octopus NC : Narrator Comments PC: Police Car

d. The year of publication are employed to indicate the year when the comics issued by KOMPAS.

010, 135 refer to the number of datum 678, 706 refer to the volume or series of the data “THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN”

ES, NC refer to the comic characters 2009 refer to the year of data published ST means that the datum is taken from the sou rce text of the comic “THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN” TT means that the datum is taken from the translation text of the comic “THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN”.

The researcher uses two methods in collecting data, namely, content analysis and questionnaire. In the first method, content analysis, the researcher collects the data from the source of data. In the second method, the researcher uses a close and open-ended questionnaire. The questionnaires are distributed to 3 raters to gain the information about the accuracy and acceptability level of data of the “THE AMAZING

SPIDERMAN” to determine the accuracy and acceptability level of the translation data by giving score based on a scale with three levels. The scale for accuracy rating as follows: Accuracy Scale

1 Inaccurate, the message of the source text is not conveyed at all, i.e. it is omitted or deleted.

2 Less Accurate, the message of the source text is less accurate conveyed into the target text. Rewriting and some changes in word order are needed.

3 Accurate, the message of the source text is perfectly and clearly conveyed into the target text. No rewriting is needed.

1 Unacceptable, the translated texts extremely sound like translation and feel displease as Indonesian texts.

The questionnaire used to determine the readability of the translated text is filled by the comic‟s readers or target readers (respondents). The respondents determine the readability level of the translation data by giving score based on a scale with three levels. The scale for readability rating as follows: Readability Scale

1 Unreadable, the reader completely does not comprehend the content of the translated text.

2 Less unreadable, there is one difficult word or more found in the translated text. However, the reader still manages to understand the content of the dialogue.

3 Readable, the translated text is fully comprehended. The reader understands the content of the dialogue.

The tabulation of the ratings from the raters is as follows: Accuracy level of translation is classified into three groups, as can be seen below:

- Scale 1: Inaccurate, includes the data with mean score 1.0 to 1.5 - Scale 2: Less accurate, includes the data with mean score 1.6 to 2.5

- Scale 3: Accurate, includes the data with mean score 2.6 to 3.0 Acceptability level of translation is classified into three groups, as can be seen below:
