The technique of gathering the data is by recording the native speakers’ of Medan Mandarin Chinese in telling stories and answering the questions related to
the morphological processes in the language.
Since the writer was in need of a better result of the data during the interview, the writer made two ways of doing the interviews with the interviewees. The first
one, the interviewee was not told that the interview would be recorded so that the interviewee could not arrange systematically his or her passage. This is important
for the writer to obtain an original data from the interviewee. On the other hand, there are some interviews done by letting the interviewees know during the recording
process as well. In addition to the qualitative method, the descriptive linguistics is also
applied in this thesis for the descriptive linguistics deals with the design of the language of some community at a given time ignoring interpersonal and intergroup
differences and such differences are always be found in any language spoken by more than one person since no two people have exactly the same set of habits.

3.3 The Procedure of Analysing the Data
In order to get an accurate and systematic procedure of the investigation, the data that have been gathered will be analysed based on the procedures. There are two
steps carried out in completing this thesis: 1.
After the data have been collected by the interviews related to the thesis title on a tape and gathered sentences that contain
morphological processes from many kinds linguistic textbooks, then all them will be classified according to the types of affixation,
compounding or reduplication. In addition to it, all of the data are then transcribed into Pinyin transcription, simplified Chinese
character and also translated them into Gloss in English in order to make the readers whose mother tongues are not Mandarin easy to
understand. The first procedure can be seen in details as follows: Pinyin | simplified Chinese Character | Gloss in English
2. The morphological processes are examined to find out based of the
types of suffixation, compounding, and reduplication. The suffixation

will be applied in accordance with the structuralist approach, i.e., Nida’s six principles.
3. Finally, there will be a testing to prove the appropriateness of the
thesis statement to the fact. The fact that the writer himself is a Medan Mandarin speaker as well, certainly this benefit will bring a great
asset for him to look into the data more specific in terms of word- formation of this thesis.
