4. Self-esteem

The table 4.4 below shows the responses of the learners related to Self-esteem. Table 4.4. Self-esteem No. Items Response Means Never 1 Rarely 2 Sometimes 3 Often 4 Always 5 14. I note my strengths and weaknesses in learning English and improve them. 14 25 23 33 5 2.9 Based on the responses, 38 of them were found positive. „Rarely‟ has been responded by 39 of the subjects; while 23 agreed „sometimes‟. The mean value 2.9 calculated for the item shows that the average of the learners evaluated themselves through noting their strengths and weakness in learning, and improved them. According to him Camilleri,1999, “the main characteristic of autonomy as an approach to learning is that learners take some significant responsibility for their own learning over and above res ponding to instruction” This item was designed to find out whether the learners evaluated themselves or not.

5. Use of reference materials

The table 4.5 below shows the responses of the learners related to the use of reference materials. Table 4.5. Use of reference materials No. Items Response Means Never 1 Rarely 2 Sometimes 3 Often 4 Always 5 15. I revise lessons and seek the reference books. 11 30 29 25 5 2.83 16. Besides the contents prescribed in the course, I read extra materials in advance. 13 24 36 27 3.64 Total Means 3.24 Table 5 shows 30 of them revised the lessons and sought reference materials. On the other side, 41 of them rarely tried with such activities and 29 did sometimes. The average value of the responses in item 15 sustained 2.83 depicting that less learners were positive to the practice of this activity. Observing the responses to item 16; 45 agreed to „always‟ that they always read extra materials besides those prescribed in their course. But 30 responded to „rarely‟; while 25 decided „sometimes‟. The mean is 3.19. The grand mean 3.24 shows that generally the learners using reference are higher than those who do not use.

6. Motivation

The table 4.6 below shows the responses of the learners related to motivation. Table 4.6. Motivation No . Items Response Means Never 1 Rarely 2 Sometimes 3 Often 4 Always 5 17. When I make progress in learning, I reward myself such as: buy new things, celebrate parties etc. 32 22 22 13 11 2.49 Item 17 as in the table 6 was used to find out the learner s‟ self- motivation. Half of the learners disagreed the item saying that they rarely did such activities. Only 22 tended to reward themselves when they made progress by buying new things or celebrating parties or else. On the other hand, 24 agreed to the statement. The weighted mean 2.49 shows that only few of the learners made practice of this activity.

7. Use of technology in learning

The table 4.7. below shows the responses related to the use of technology in learning English.
