10. Zion
This student was a reluctant participant for most of the sessions. He was eager to be part of the group and enjoyed the attention of being a
selected member. Initially, Zion seemed to be very positive about this study, but his enthusiasm diminished. At one point, he decided, of his
own accord, to quit. After a discussion with the researcher and his English teacher and a phone call home to his mother, Zion decided that he would
return to the study. Zion missed only one lesson. He could easily distract others from the task at hand. Sometimes he would rush through a task so
that he could be the first student to finish. He was viewed as a leader in the group because he appeared fluent when speaking Indonesian language
and offered responses during oral discussions. All the discussion in this study using Indonesian language.

Table 4.10 displays the quantifiable data collected from January to March 2011, regarding Zion‘s reading ability using local text attitudes
and achievements. Zion‘s March learning outcome score showed a significant
improvement over his preceding one; as this assessment was administered early in this study, it is unclear whether the study contributed to his
improvement. Zion demonstrated no improvement in other quantitative measurements of his reading ability and attitude from January to March.
Zion did show improvement in some areas, as can be seen in the qualitative data. He thoroughly enjoyed leading and participated fully in
oral discussions using Indonesian language, which contradicted his reading ability interest study statement that he did not like to talk about
what he learnt. Zion successfully organizes text-to-text himself. There five kind of texts; descriptive, report, procedure, narrative and recount. He
enjoyed all opportunities to use the computer; this kept him engaged in the study. Zion stated that he liked very much on procedure text. He was
often able to scan for information, and he knew how to use skim to get main idea. It was obvious that Zion had a lot of experience with website
navigation at home. There were many times when Zion‘s lack of fluency inhibited his
ability to comprehend reading text. His initial reading interest study stated that he preferred do the task nearby him directly because he cannot
imagine something abstract or how to write down a very small text; by
March, He often read at a pace that was too rapid for his rate of comprehension. Zion
‘s jotted notes contained extraneous information such as do not read the text as whole but see the key word on the
questions and this made it difficult for him to concisely summarize the material. For example, when doing the task of descriptive, Zion would
simply list the statistics given. He also failed to show an improvement in his self-monitoring for understanding during his miscue analysis
assessments. He made errors that affected his understanding of the texts 50 of the time in his March assessment, compared to his score of 41.7
in January. Zion was engaged in the reading tasks only when the topic
interested him. Thus, he was very much on task used alfa dictionary as finding English words and shared reading material but he did not want to
participate. Zion mentioned that he chose his learning reading material by its skimming. His skimming with local text showed no change in the
range of skimming questions and his participation statistics remained the same for the duration of the study. Zion
noted that he ―does not like English
.‖ In March, he stated, ―English is very good but it is hard to learn also how to answer the questions from the text.‖ and, ―my English teacher
is a good teacher because she‘s my mom.‖ He also stated that he does the
task for giving pleasure to my mom outside of school. When asked what he learned from the study
he said, ―I did not learn anything from my mom
.‖
