Appendix L : General Description of the Designed Materials THE GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE DESIGNED MATERIALS
The title of this study is “A Set of Integrated English Instructional Materials Based on Suggestopedia Method for Fifth Grade Students of SD
Percobaan 3 Pakem”. This study is aimed to design a set of designed materials to help the fifth grade students of SD Percobaan 3 Pakem to learn and develop their
English proficiency based on the principles of Suggestopedia Method. In this part, the writer is going to explain three points of the designed materials; they are
background, content, and purpose. A. Background
The designing of designed materials is based on many important factors. The important factors come from the important point of English as an
international language in recent era, the duty to learn English for elementary students that was decided by the government, and characteristics of the students.
English is one of the important subjects that must be mastered by the students at school. Based on the reason, the Indonesian government decided to
add English in the primary curricula. Another factor that becomes a base to design the material comes from the students characteristics. The fifth grade students are
considered as young learners. Some of young learners’ characteristics are like playing together, talking their own, singing a song, and doing many other fun
activities. Hence, the learning materials and activities should facilitate the student’s characteristics. However, this is difficult to be applied because there is
limitation of English Materials and teaching learning hours in the classroom. These two factors become the main problems in teaching-learning process.
Dealing with the fact, the writer tried to design a set of instructional materials that integrate listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills based on
principles of Suggestopedia Method that challenge the fifth grade students of SD Percobaan 3 Pakem to learn English with doing pleasurable activities as stated
above in order to achieve the goals.
B. Content
The designed materials consist of four units. Each unit is divided into
three main parts, namely: The Pre Session Phase. The Session Phase. The Post Session Phase
. In the end of the unit, there is one addition phase, namely The Evaluation Phase.
The time allocation for each meeting is 2 x 35’ minutes 70 minutes.
1. The Pre-Session Phase The Pre-Session Phase
is a pre-activity in order to raise the students ‘interest in a topic. In this phase the students are made familiar with the key topics
of the new materials for the first time. This part is the beginning phase to build the positive mind set of the students that they will learn English easily and
pleasurably. Hence, the teacher should explain and give positive suggestions about the material pleasantly and easily. The activities of this phase mostly
listening activity.

2. The Session Phase The Session Phase
is the main part of the materials with include tasks and activities that can develop students’ performance individually and in groups.
In this part contains some activities, such as speaking, reading, and writing activities. Moreover, this part contains the discussion of certain pattern or
expression related to the topic. In this part, it will also be played some classical music to relax the students in doing some exercises, tasks, and discussion in The
Session Phase. 3. The Post-Session Phase
The Post Session Phase
is a post-teaching activity that contains the elaboration activities of each unit to activate its assimilation. This part mostly
contains playing game and singing a song. This part is also aimed to relax the students before closing the lesson.
The units and topics in the designed materials are as follows. Unit Topic

8 Favorite Figure
4. The Evaluation Phase
In this phase, the students are given written test form contains the material of four units. The test is arranging words, multiple choice form, and
translation. This phase functions to measure the students’ understanding about the materials.
C.
Purpose
The purposes of the designed materials are to help the students to learn and develop English skills through doing many fun and enjoyable activities that
engage the students to learn English. The purpose of this designed material also gives positive suggestions to the students that learning English is pleasurable and
easy. Moreover, the designed material contains emotional force, interesting characteristics, and some topics that are related to students’ daily life. Therefore,
the students can be motivated to learn English, and obtain positive lesson from the designed material.
Hopefully, the designed materials can develop the four English skills; those are listening, reading, speaking, and writing skill. In order to achieve these
objectives, the writer composed each unit based on the principles of Suggestopedia Method that will be reflected in the designed materials and the
instructions.

GAMBARAN UMUM MATERI PEMBELAJARAN
Studi ini berjudul “A Set of Integrated English Instructional Materials Based on Suggestopedia Method for Fifth Grade Students of SD Percobaan 3
Pakem”. Studi ini bertujuan untuk mendesain seperangkat materi pembelajaran bahasa Inggris untuk membantu para siswa kelas 5 lima SD Percobaan 3 Pakem
dalam belajar dan mengembangkan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris berdasarkan prinsip-prinsip metode Suggestopedia. Pada bagian ini, penulis akan menjelaskan
3 tiga poin berikut; latar belakang, isi, dan tujuan yang disusun oleh penulis. A.
Latar Belakang
Perancangan materi pembelajaran ini berdasarkan pada banyak faktor penting. Faktor-faktor penting tersebut berasal dari peran penting bahasa Inggris
sebagai bahasa Internasional pada kehidupan sekarang ini, kewajiban belajar bahasa Inggris untuk siswa Sekolah Dasar yang ditetapkan oleh pemerintah, dan
karakter siswa sebagai pembelajar muda.
Bahasa Inggris adalah salah satu pelajaran penting yang harus dikuasai oleh para siswa. Berdasarkan alasan tersebut, pemerintah Indonesia memutuskan
untuk memasukkan pelajaran bahasa Inggris di kurikulum tingkat dasar. Faktor lain yang menjadi landasan penyusunan seperangkat materi pembelajaran ini
berasal dari karakter siswa. Siswa kelas 5 lima Sekolah Dasar dianggap sebagai pembelajar muda. Beberapa karakter pembelajar muda adalah menyukai bermain
bersama, membicarakan apa yang mereka punyai, menyanyi, dan melakukan banyak kegiatan lain yang menyenangkan. Maka dari itu, materi dan kegiatan
pembelajaran seharusnya dapat memfasilitasi karakter siswa tersebut. Namun demikian, hal ini sulit diterapkan karena adanya batasan materi bahasa Inggris dan
jam pengajaran dalam kelas. Kedua hal ini menjadi masalah utama dalam proses belajar-mengajar.
Melihat kenyataan tersebut, penulis mencoba untuk mendesain seperangkat materi pembelajaran yang mengintegrasikan ketrampilan
mendengarkan, membaca, berbicara, dan menulis berdasarkan prinsip-prinsip metode ‘Suggestopedia’ yang mengajak para siswa kelas 5 lima SD Percobaan 3
Pakem untuk belajar dengan melakukan aktivitas yang menyenangkan seperti yang disebutkan diatas untuk mencapai tujuan.
