Research Design Data Collection
39 ∑y
: Total score of students outcome ∑xy : Total number of x multiple by y
x² : Guarded from x
y² : guarded from y
To examine the reliability of the instrument this study use
the formula AlphaCronbach: nS²-
∑Si² α = ___________
n-1 S² Note :
α : alpha coefficient
n : amount of respondent
S² : variants total of score
Sі² : variants of item.
2. Technique in Data analysis This study used Pearson analysis in analyzing the data, then for the
purpose of testing hypothesis, this study also analyzed: a. Normality test
Normality test is to find out whether the data distributed normally or not. To measure normality test following procedures are done:
1. observation Xı, X
2
, …
Xn be zı, z
2
,…
z
n.
2. each this raw numbers using the standard normal distribution list, then calculated the odd F zi = P z zi
3. then calculated the proportion of z1, z2…zn smaller or equal to zi by S zi then S zi = number of z1, z2…zn smaller zi equal to
the amount of data shared. 4. compute the difference F zi
– S zi and then specify the absolute price.
5. Take the price of the greater of the absolute difference in prices them.
In the study, coefficient used is 0.05, while visual learning style got 0.074 and parents attention gained 0.533, also students achievement
40 had 0.214. The theree numbers 0.074,0.533, 0.214 are more than
coefficients, that means the variables used has normal distribution b. Homogenity test
Homogenity test is performed to determine the homogenity of population data, when the data is homogeneous then the regression
technique is used for the research, the test is performed by classifying the research data based on data analyzed, they are X
1,
X
2,
and Y. then it use to test the homogeneity of variance formula Barlett. This study
used the formula one way analysis of variances one-way ANOVA.
c. Hypotesis: Hypothesis is a statement that function as a prediction about the
result, the hypothesis guided the researcher to gather the data are: Ho : data get from homogene population
Ha : data is not from homogene population 1. Test criterion:
P- value sig. α 0.05, Ho acceptable
P-value sig. α 0.05, Ho rejected
2. Significance If F
statistic
F
table
then it is not significant There is no difference between sample group.
If F
statistic
F
table
then it is significant There is difference between sample group.
c. Analysis correlation coefficient r Analysis of the correlation coefficient r is an analysis method
that aimed to determine strong or not that relationship between the variables X and variable Y. The formula is:
∑ ∑
∑ ∑
∑ ∑
∑ ∑
The formula of R² determination coefficient
41 KP = R² x 100
2
Note : r : score of coefficient correlation
n : total of respondent X : independent variable
Y : dependent variable With assumption if:
r : -1 or close to -1, then the relationship between two variables expressed negative or very weak.
r: 0 or close to 0, then the relationship between these two variables is very weak or no relationship at all.
r: +1 or close to 1,then the relationship between the two variables tested is positive and very strong.
Table 3.1 Guidance to Interpret Correlation Coefficient
Interval Coefficient Correlation Level
0,00 —0,199
Lowest 0,20
—0,399 Low
0,40 —0,599
Middle 0,60
—0,799 Strong
0,80 —1,000
Strongest
D. Hypothesis This study is intended to prove the correlation among learning
style, parents attention, and students achievement in English. Independent variable one is Visual learning style and
independent variable two is parents’ attention, while the dependent

42 variable is student achievement in English. in non directional
hypothesis, it is predicted there is relationship for variables. The hypotheses in this thesis are:
1. There is correlation between visual learning style to student achievement in English.
2. There is correlation between parent s’ attention to student
achievement in English 3. There is correlation between visual learning style and parents’
attention to student achievement in English. E. Population Sample
As the population, there are 6 schools in branch 3. The schools are 4 public schools and 2 private schools. The writer took public
school. The reason why the writer takes public school are that:
Students are middle low family, they mostly spend their time
with their grandparents at home.
Parents are mostly worker, they become less attention to their children.
The third branches located nearest to Capital city, it used to
belong to South Jakarta. The people life style is more to urban areas.
Since it is urban area, the needs of good mark is highly wanted,
whether for school or parents.
Since parents work, students study alone at home, they potentially use their ability by themselves.
The population is 184 students from four schools, while this study uses ramdom sampling that means every school is taken 22
students for sample, that will collect 88 students for the sample.
