KAJIAN TEORITIS
2.1 Koleksi Digital
Perkembangan teknologi komunikasi dan informasi telah memberi dampak bertambahnya jenis koleksi pada perpustakaan, yaitu koleksi digital.
Dengan adanya jaringan Internet dan media komputer, menuntut adanya koleksi digital dalam penelusuran informasi yang cepat dan tersedia setiap saat.
Menurut African Digital Library 2002 : 1, yang dimaksud dengan koleksi digital digital collections adalah:
This is an electronic Internet based collection of information that is normally found in hard copy, but converted to a computer compatible
format. Digital books seemed somewhat slow to gain popularity, possible because of the quality of many computer screens and the relatively short
life of the Internet. This seemingly slow start to the use of eBooks should be seen in the context of the hundreds, if not thousands of years it took to
move from the verbal to the written - initially on rock, clay tablets, animal skins, papyrus scrolls and finally, to modern paper.
Dalam kutipan tersebut di atas koleksi digital adalah koleksi informasi dalam bentuk elektronik berbasis internet yang umumnya terdapat dalam koleksi
cetak, yang dapat diakses secara luas menggunakan media komputer dan sejenisnya. Tartojogja 2008 : 1 menyatakan “koleksi digital disini dapat
bermacam-macam, dapat berupa buku elektronik, jurnal elektronik, database online, statistik elektronik, dan lain sebagainya”.
Koleksi digital dapat terdiri atas beberapa jenis dokumen file type yaitu setiap program yang berbeda akan menghasilkan jenis dokumen yang berbeda
pula sesuai dengan program yang digunakan, perbedaan itu dapat dilihat dari gambar icon dokumen atau yang lebih umum adalah tiga huruf yang tertera
setelah tanda titik pada judul dokumen. Misalnya “judul.doc” menunjukkan dokumen tersebut dibuat dengan program Microsoft Word, “judul.xls”
menunjukkan dokumen tersebut dibuat dengan program Microsoft Excel, dan banyak lagi ragamnya, seperti tabel di bawah ini:
