1. Pre-design Study
In the pre-design study, the writer conducted the preliminary study by conducting an interview to one of the tenth grade English teachers of SMA STELLA
DUCE 1 Yogyakarta. The interview was done on April 12, 2008. Then, the writer distributed pre-design questionnaires to 37 tenth grade
students of SMA STELLA DUCE 1 Yogyakarta. The aim of distributing the pre- design questionnaires was to gain data for the diagnosis of needs. From the results
of the pre-design questionnaire, the writer obtained data about the students’ interests, abilities, and difficulties regarding to the implementation of reading
lesson in the classroom. The distribution of the pre-design questionnaire was done on May 6, 2008 and the results of this pre-design questionnaire were obtained on
May 7, 2008.
2. Post-design Study
In the post-design study, the writer distributed the post-design questionnaire and the designed materials to the users and the experts. The users were two English
teachers of SMA STELLA DUCE 1 Yogyakarta and the experts were two English lecturers of English Education Study Program of Sanata Dharma University. The
distribution of the designed materials and the post-design questionnaire was to obtain feedbacks, comments, and suggestions in order to revise and improve the
materials. After improving and revising the materials according to the participants’
evaluation, the writer conducted a pilot study. The pilot study was conducted on September 9, 2008. The study was conducted within a small group. Three tenth
grade students of SMA STELLA DUCE 1 Yogyakarta took part in this study. The students were asked to do one unit in the designed materials. Furthermore, the
writer applied the teaching learning activities proposed in the syllabus. The results of the study were used to make some necessary adjustments on the designed
materials and the syllabus.
