Jealous The development of Pari’s personality

After experiencing life and having the conflict with her stepmother, her personality change. She has no affection and also attention to her mother anymore. She also shows the reaction that does not show affection to her mother anymore, and it is clearly shown at the quote above. By applying the Freudian theory that is explained in the second chapter of this study, the writer knows that Pari shows two expressions that signifies the oedipal stage. As what has said before, oedipal stage that is experienced by female called Female Oedipus Complex and that stage allows the female to have a competition with her mother for the father’s love, in this case the figure father is Julien who shows an affection to both Pari and Nila Wahdati, Pari’s stepmother. The two expressions that implicitly shown by the author based on that quote are: The first, Pari has spent hours with Julien in a café, having coffee, beer and wine together until the sky darkened. The will that is shown by Pari in having conversation with her stepmother’s lover expresses the effort of Pari to get the attention from her stepmother’s lover, Julien, and to have him fully. The second is Pari’s expression when Julien starts to ask about her stepmother, Mrs. Nila Wahdati. The quote above clearly shows that Pari does not like the topic about her stepmother. To be more specific, she does not like that Julien still has an interest to her stepmother. In this condition her stepmother is Pari’s rival to get Julien’s attention. Furthermore, considering the topic of this study is about family conflict, the fact that Pari becomes jealous and experiences Female Oedipus Complex is clearly caused by the family conflict experienced by Pari and an obsession that she has to get a man in order to prove that she is an attractive girl. The different opinion and the way her stepmother treats Pari are the core. According to the quote in the previous page and by applying the Freudian theory about oedipal stage, the writer can say that Pari is experiencing Female Oedipus Complex stage which is unconsciously expressed by her to have Julien, the figure of father as the one that can give her affection. The wish to have Julien is realized by Pari when she has a conversation for hours with Julien and the reaction when Julien still keeps the interest in Pari’s stepmother. The first act symbolizes that Pari finally gets the figure of father’s attention. The second act clearly shows that she has a rivalry with her stepmother to get Julien’s attention. The writer sees, Pari’s decision to stay in hours having conversation with Julien is the wish she has caused by the Female Oedipus Complex experienced by Pari. Pari’s wish is realized when Julien asks Pari to stay with him. Pari’s decision seen by the “glasses” of id, ego and superego gives a fact that Pari’s decision is driven mostly by the power of Id that unconsciously works within herself. As explained before, Pari has interest in Julien and she wants to stay with him. She sees she can get a Julien to fulfill her obsession to get a man’s affection. The joy, the pleasure, the comfort that she feels when she has a chat with Julien triggers her Id’s wish to seek the pleasure or joy. The Id forces her only to seek pleasure is proved by the jealousy that is shown on the dialogue above. The jealousy expressed by Pari shows that Id directs her decision, because the jealousy comes up when she does not like Julien’s question about her stepmother. Based on Female Oedipus complex theory explained before, her stepmother is Pari’s rival to get the attention from the figure of the father, Julien. When Julien says the question, it just “washes out” the pleasure or joy which has been achieved by the force of Id, that is why it Pari shows the jealousy expression to show that she does not like that question.

2. Reckless

Recklessness is decided as the most appropriate word to describe Pari’s action which does not care about her stepmother’s feeling. The motivation of that reckless action is caused by the oedipal stage which is experienced by Pari. It makes her showing signs by being reckless unconsciously. The recklessness which is shown by Pari clearly described by the author when Pari with no doubt says yes to Julien’s invitation to move in with him in the apartment. A few weeks later, Julien asked Pari to move in with him. He lived in a small apartment on the Left Bank in the 7th arrondissement. Pari said yes. 2013:233. Pari remembers her first Sunday with Julien at his place. They were reclined on his couch, pressed against each other. Pari was pleasantly half awake, and Julien was drinking tea, his long legs resting on the coffe table. He was reading an opinion piece on the back page of the newspaper. Jacques Brel played on the turntable. Every now and then, Pari would shift her head on his chest, and julien would lean down and place a small kiss on her eyelid, or her ear, or her nose 2013:233-234. Before discussing which point that shows the recklessness of Pari, the writer would like to reconnect those two quotes above back to the previous Pari’s first characteristic or personality in the explanation below. According to Freudian theory, a female who is in a Female Oedipus Complex stage allows herself to feel the desire for sexual intercourse with the father and accompanying feelings of hostility for the mother Feist and Feist, 2008:41. At the previous analysis Pari shows the sign of the oedipal stage by showing her will and her action, unconsciously, to spend hours just to have a conversation with Julien. At that moment she also has him fully, but the moment that she enjoys becomes unpleasant moment when Julien shows his interest to Pari’s stepmother by addressing a question to Pari about her stepmother. Because of Julien’s question, Pari becomes jealous and she knows that Julien gives attention to another woman, her stepmother which hurts her feeling and underestimates her ability in attracting man through the dishonest compliment. In addition, after showing the first sign of oedipal phase when she wants to have Julien fully in a long conversation, Pari also shows the second sign which leads her to be a reckless person. At the first sign, Pari gets an attention from Julien in a long conversation which happens in a café, but she gets jealous when Julien still has an interest in Pari’s stepmother. In the second sign the desire of Pari to get Julien fully is realized by having sexual intercourse with Julien, in other word by having intimate relationship and even sexual intercourse with Julien, Pari fulfills her Oedipal Complex’s desire which becomes her obsession. Therefore, when Julien asks Pari to live with him in his apartment, Pari, with no doubt, directly gives a “yes” to Julien. It does not only show that Pari has a closer relation with Julien, but it also shows that she finally can have him fully. Pari also shows no attention and no worry about her stepmother’s attractive look anymore. The sexual intercourse provided by the author is seen as Pari’s obsession that she finally gets. A few weeks later, Julien asked Pari to move in with him. He lived in a small apartment on the Left Bank in the 7th arrondissement. Pari said yes. 2013:233. Pari also shows her recklessness when she directly gives a “yes” to Julien whether she realizes it or not. Moreover, the impact of Pari’s recklessness by giving a “yes” to Julien’s invitation is emphasized by reading the quote below. A bit long quotation is provided below in order to make the reader understands that Pari feels the guilt after staying together in Julien’s apartment. “We have to tell Maman” She could feel him tightening. He folded the paper, removed his reading glasses and put them on the arm of the couch. “She needs to know.” “I suppose,” he said. “You ‘suppose’?” “No, of course. You’re right. You should call her. But be careful. Don’t ask for permission or blessing, you’ll get neither. Just tell her. And make sure she knows this is not a negotiation.” Pari called her the next day. Maman already knew. “Who told you?” “Collette.” Of course, Pari thought. “I was going to tell you.” “I know you were. You are. It can’t be hidden, a thing like this.” “Are you angry?” “Does it matter?” Pari was standing by the window. With her finger, she absently traced the blue rim of Julien’s old, battered ashtray. She shut her eyes. “No, Maman. No it doesn’t.” “Well, I wish I could say that didn’t hurt.” “I didn’t mean it to.”
