• Lack of access to the needed equipment – The main equipment for implementing CALL is computer. However, regarding to the economical
condition, not all learners have a computer. Therefore, learning is limited only to learners who have computer Coshott, 2009:67.
• Increasing educational cost – There are some factors needing consideration, such as the computer price, the school fee, and the low income family of the
learners who might not be able to afford a computer Young, 2009:65. • Less experiencing teachers – Teachers’ role is to transfer their knowledge to
the learners. If the teachers are not trained yet, they will not have the experiences on how to teach. Hence, before implementing language learning
assisted by computer, the teachers should be more knowledgeable and familiar first Coshott, 2009:19
• Imperfect programs – The programs should ideally consider the appropriate input and adjust it with the learning’s goals Coshott, 2009:57.
• Inability to handle any possible unexpected situations – Technology is artificial. For this reason, technology is unable to solve any occurred problems
during the learning process, like the learners’ mood, since it is not programmed Can, 2003:38.
Considering those disadvantages, teachers can more carefully plan their teaching in order to anticipate any potential problems possible to occur during the
language learning.
2.1.4 Computerized Educational Game
Games are fun and they always attract both children and adults to play them. Computer is now a media for the game creators to reach the gamers. In this
part, computerized games are elaborated through the definitions, the important factors, the types, and the advantages.
2.1.4.1 What Is A Computerized Educational Game?
To provide a clear definition on what game used in this study, below is the definitions of electronic games, digital games, computer games, computerized
games and computerized educational games Shagga 2011: 30. • Electronic Game – using either a computer or other electronic interface that
has rules, goals, and feedback. • Digital Games – a circular process of learning and the unstructured act of play
in games, and characterized as an act of learning a new form of negative instances experienced in an open virtual learning environment.
• Computer Games – able to see the performance, control the learning with getting feedbacks, and engage the lesson with graphics, sounds, animations
and figures. • Computerized Game – a rule-based formal system with a variable and
quantifiable outcome, where different outcomes are assigned different values. The outcome should make the learners feel engaged since they also exert
efforts for it. However, the consequences are optional and negotiable.
• Educational Computer Games – including motivational and funny features within the games which can be used as a support to the other instructional
methods in the direction of instructional or educational goals. • Computerized Educational Games – instructional activities that provide
motivation, entertainment, competition and reinforcement while presenting a superficial or simulated reality.
From the previous definitions, some researchers define computer games as activities based on rules and feedback to achieve learning goals. However,
computer games should make learning more enjoyable through vital environment. Moreover, fun, entertainment, competition and motivation are also focused.
Therefore, computerized games can be considered as a new teaching technique which introduces the learning activities with entertainment and feedback to
achieve the expected objectives. In this study, the chosen game is actually a computer game which is
framed to be educational. However, it also represents the real life the learners might face in the future. Consequently, there are competitions and reinforcements
involved in the game. For this reason, the used game is a computerized educational game.
2.1.4.2 Important Factors of Computerized Educational Games
When creating a game, there are some important factors existing in the game. According to Prensky 2001:22 and Ang Zaphiris 2008:80, the game
should include:
