Introduction
Data collection methods are the techniques or methods that
can be used by researchers for data collection. Data
collection activities in principle an activity the use of
methods and instruments that have been determined and
tested for Validity and Reliability. Simply put, data
collection is defined as a process or activity conducted by
researchers to uncover or encompass a wide range of
phenomena, information or research site conditions in
accordance with the scope of the study. In practice, there are
data collection is carried out through Quantitative and
Qualitative research approaches.
Definition of Data Collection
Techniques
Suharsimi Arikunto : data collection instruments are
the tools selected and used by researchers in
collecting activities so that these activities become
systematic and easy by it.
Ibn Hajar argues that the instrument is a measuring
instrument used to obtain quantitative information
about the variation in the characteristics of
variables objective.
From some of the expert opinion of the above, it can
be
concluded that the research instrument is a tool used
by researchers to collect quantitative information
about
the variables being studied.
Data Collection Techniques
The operational definition that refers to two things
that are important in relation to data collection,
namely the qualitative and quantitative
indicators. Qualitative indicators pointing to that
observed from the relevant variables, and
measurement refers to the quality observed. In
connection with these measurement problems, it
must realize that we are facing different objects
which result in variations in the measurements.
Prof. Dr. Sutrisno Hadi, M.A.
mentions 5 variations in the
measurements, namely:
The differences contained in the
measured objects,
The difference in the situation when
the measurement is made,
The difference in the measurement
tool used,
Differences in the organization or
administration,
The difference in readings and
The data collection process itself by Nan Lin in general
consists of 8 stages, as follows:
1. Review of the literature and consultation with experts.
2. Study and approach the community in which data will

be collected.
Developing and utilizing a good relationship with the
respondent and its environment.
Trial or pilot study
Formulate and prepare questions.
Recording and code.
Cross checking, validity, and reliability.
Organizing and re-code collected data that can be
analyzed.
Data Collection Methods
To collect data from a sample study,
carried out by a particular method
in accordance with its objectives. In
the process of data collection is
certainly needed a tool or
instrument to collect data. Data
collector can be divided into two:
the first means of collecting data
using the test method
(Quantitative) and non-test method
(qualitative).
Test Method (Quantitative)
The types of tests, namely:
1. Intelligence Tests
2. Talent Test
Interests
4. Personality Test
5. Development of Vocational Tests
6. Tests of Learning Outcomes
3.
Tests
Method Non-Test (Qualitative)
To complete the test data will be more accurate results
when combined with data generated using different
techniques, are presented the data collection tool in the
form of non-test. The types of non-test methods, namely:
1. Observation
2. Questionnaire
3. Interview
4. Documentary Studies
5. Autobiography
1. Observation
Observation
is
a
technique or how to
collect
data

observations of the
ongoing
activities.
There
are
several
things that must be
considered in carrying
out the observation,
among others:
Taking into account the
focus of research, and
Determine the criteria
are observed.
2. Questionnaire
Questionnaire is a list of
questions to others willing to
respond
(respondents)
in
accordance with user demand.
Interest questionnaire is to find
complete information on an issue
and
respondents
without
worrying if the respondents gave
answers that did not correspond
to reality in filling out the
questionnaire.
3. Interview
An informational interview is one
method of data collection to obtain
data
and
information
from
students orally. The interview
process is done by direct face to
face with students. During the
interview
process
guidance
officers, ask questions, ask for
explanations and answers of the
questions and make note of the
things that are revealed to him.
4. Documentary Studies
Documentary study is a
data collection techniques
to collect and analyze the
documents, both written
documents and electronic
images. Documents that
have been obtained and
analyzed
(parsed),
compared and combined
(synthetic) form one result

5. Autobiography
Autobiography is a
composition made by
the students about
the history of his life
until
the
present
moment. Life history
that can cover the
entire life in the past
or just a few aspects
of life alone.
Conclusion
To collect data from a sample study, carried

information needed in order to achieve the
research objectives. The goals expressed in
the form of a hypothesis is a temporary
answer, to a research. Answer it still needs to
be tested empirically, and for this purpose
necessary data collection. The data collected
is determined by the variables that exist in
the hypothesis. Data was collected by a
sample that had been predetermined. The
sample consists of a set unit of analysis as the
research target.
