some sense, students actually expect at least their high school or college to be in the same level of computer literacy as their students.
In terms of the application of MOODLE in one of Alinas course in Sanata Dharma University, she was greatly appreciative on what has been done; an
innovative approach has been conducted in the classroom. She felt that the practicality of MOODLE has helped her in organizing and prioritizing her study
life. One notable feature that worked wonders for her was concerning the nature of cloud services. Like all other cloud services, MOODLE as an LMS inherently
has cloud services for its users to store and keep track of the data; it allows students to upload and download assignments and store the assignments for future
needs. Meaning to say, the hustle and tussle of campus life can be reduced allowing students to concentrate more on knowledge building and in short she
does not need to worry about losing her documents and consequently better classroom performance.
4.1.2 Lias Story
The second participant of this research was Lia pseudonym. She was born in Yogyakarta, but spent most of her childhood in Batam. She comes from a
multicultural background, her mother was from central Java while her father was from the Netherlands, and hence, her last name resembles that of a foreigner. Lia
also comes from upper middle class society with a secure financial stability, she was raised with both Javanese and European culture. She is fluent in Bahasa
Indonesia, certain degree of understanding in Javanese language system, and of course English, with a touch of Eastern European Accent. She is another victim of
73
Korean wave that has been sweeping across the nation like a hurricane in the past 10 years or so. Having been raised in typical Javanese family and at the same time
exposed to western culture and English language at young age, she has but two native languages, English and Indonesian.
Lia is a lethargic teenager when it comes to sports and music; her preference for past times would involve twisting, rotating and tweaking her palm
sized iPhone. The same can almost be said about her when dealing with her laptop computer where she is very attached to it. Lia has some artistic nature, she is
quick to capture the world using her mobile phone cameras and share it in her instagram. In her spare time, when she is not frolicking with her friends in her
favorite joint, she would make some modifications of her photos to suit her taste using popular programs such as Corel Draw X3, or Photoshop CS series and share
it to her friends. She would even make a short video from her video collection during her travels in different countries in 2007-2008, she would use pinnacle
home studio for assistance. Lia has never found English as a difficult subject due to her background,
speaking has always been her strong points, it is something that she enjoy most compared to other language skills. During her high school years Lia joined
schools debating club and has represented her school in many competition, winning merit for her hard work. Her passion for public speaking and English
debate has a reciprocal relationship to her study. In most school subjects and in college, one of the most common activities in the classroom is to make classroom
presentations. She is convinced that speaking can be nerve wracking for some
74
people if they have had no practice or had very few practices, so in order to do well one must have a good confidence in themselves and practices a lot. This was
never really the case for Lia, as she had a great deal of experience in that department along with her natural traits as a bilingual.
This circumstance however does not extend to other language skill for learning English. Li has never been passionate about writing. She hated it. She
hates writing, academic writing in particular, as much as she hates sports. She considers it as a messy job. She has done a couple of scientific reports in the
past in high school but never really put effort into it and consequently she had never excelled in that department. She do realized the importance of writing for
later use of her life, as her dream job was actually become a primary school teacher and in the light of her realization after attending writing 2, she joined a
campus journalism society to step up the game. Interesting enough, she found that writing 2 class is more enjoyable than
her journalism class, reason being is that the innovative approach that the lecturer has done in the class raises her interest in writing more, her writing mood
increases since technology was introduced in the classroom. Apparently she likes anything associated with technology, even if it wasnt as exciting as browsing
internet web pages or playing online games. Lia added that the use of MOODLE in writing 3 class has exponentially raised her interest in academic writing.
Lia would spend around five to six hours in front of her laptop computer on daily basis and since the design and the mechanics of MOODLE is similar if
not the same to other pages that she visits daily. She felt obligated to visit
75
MOODLE on a daily basis as well even if just for checking for updates. This change of behavior has set off chain reaction towards her perspective on writing.
She visits MOODLE daily means that she is more exposed to academic writing materials that are available in the website. This would also mean that her
knowledge in writing increases resulting better result in her writing products. She mentioned that in terms of structuring ideas, she performs better in spoken
utterances but finds it more difficult in written mode. She indicated that the lack of desire to write and psychological block such as having the sensation that her
work perhaps inferior to others, may have incapacitate her ability to really progress.
With the introduction of genre based approach for writing text types and MOODLE as the instrument has helped her to reduce her confusion in learning
writing text types. Genre based approach provides a clear, step by step instruction for writing text types through cycles and stages and while MOODLE reduces
personal anxiety and introduce convenience during the writing process. She explicitly states that it was such a liberating feeling, just to be in a preferred
environment and to have control over privacy settings complements the perfect marriage between GBA and MOODLE.
With these newly found power, she has able to put more thought into her work and she even double checks her work before submitting and for most part
does grammatical check up. Lia considers the benefits of the practicality of MOODLE as a learning management system. The full integration of internet has
made it feasible for Lia to work anywhere and anytime, without the constraints of
76
space and time. She has managed to prioritize her life better and getting better grades in writing. A good example is that most of her writing assignments and
homework are submitted on time, which was never a success for Lia prior attending writing 3 class and she also managed to submit her revised product on
time as well, which is just an icing on the cake. All of this sense of security has had more confidence in her writing.
Collaborative learning is also being highlighted in Lias struggle in writing. Although she preferred to work on her draft alone and wished that none
of her classmates examine her draft, she doesnt mind getting some input from her friends, a rather ironic circumstance. The personal messaging feature available in
MOODLE allows her to communicate with friends; it enables her to transfer knowledge to her friends and vice versa with some distance between them. It
allows her the freedom to work collaboratively outside of the classroom and without having to worry that her classmates have seen what she has been working
on.
