THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK LITERATURE REVIEW

52 The entire analysis process aims to examine the lived experience from the ones who produced the experience rather than imposition of other peoples interpretations. It should be the interpretations of the participants in the phenomenon under study that define the commonalties of the lived experience in the phenomenon. It is not the researchers own thinking of the phenomenon, the other researchers experience of the phenomenon, or the theoretical descriptions of the phenomenon that are under analysis.

2.2 THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

This research is to uncover the shaping of students perception and the kinds of contribution MOODLE had when implicated in language learning classroom, in particularly learning writing text types using genre based approach. I have made attempts to find the relevant theories for the research and I adopted significant theorist as suggested in the literature review. I have found that there are three major theoretical perspective that will be the advocate of my research. They are basic academic writing, genre based approach, and students experience. English Letters Department, Sanata Dharma adopted communicative competence in their pedagogy for the basic language learning, that includes writing in semester three. The premise of writing text types for ELF context in Indonesia is considered as basic academic writing and that the English Letters Department, embraced genre based approach as the pedagogy for teaching basic academic writing that value communicative competence, Genre based approach is a concept of teaching which values socio-cultural perspective of language, the prime focus 53 of genre based approach is not only the sentence structure of the text but lexicogrammatical relationship, the cohesion, and coherence of text moreover students must be expose to the discourse of the text, meaning to say students must be equipped with discourse competence. Genre based approach is an approach which consist of cycle and stages and students are encourage to undergo the whole cycle and stages. This rather recent approach would post different perception in students mind. The experience of such approach is then manifested in the form of attitude and behaviour. Another concern that the researcher try to unfold is the implementation of CALL classroom, or blended learning. Hence, the students of writing three, odd semester year 2011-2012 experience phenomenon in two folds, the nature of genre based approach and implications of MOODLE and its exciting properties. Hermeneutics phenomenology try to describe what people experience and how it is that they experience. The objective is to identify the essence of the shared experience that underlies all the variations in this particular learning experience. In this case the researcher will try to dig down onto the participants perception regarding the new method of teaching. In order to conduct phenomenology inquiry the researcher must first develop a set of strategies. They are observation, in-depth interviews, participants and the context, and lastly the documenting. As writing text types is regarded as a difficult skill to acquire, moreover when technology is implicated creates spectrum of perceptions. It is obviously valuable to be aware of students attitude and behaviour in order to make such learning feasible. After reviewing many theories related to writing, genre based 54 approach, and hermeneutic phenomenology, I attempt to construct the framework for this research in order to gain theoretical answers for the research question using hermeneutic-circle which contains parts-as-a-whole and whole-as-a-part concept. Figure 2.2 Research Construct The conceptual framework provides leads to guide and describe the research construct, categories, and indicators which assists the researcher to limit the scope of the participants narratives. 55 Construct Category Indicator Students Belief Individual Affective factor Cognitive factor Lived experience Belief Individual Understanding Shared Action Feeling Learning Model Belief Benefits of learning management system Content Approach in teaching Challenges in learning writing writing text types Implementation of teaching and learning cycles using electronic media Table 2.2 Blue print of Pre-figured Themes In this research I proposed a pre-understanding that was developed from the theoretical review and the research construct. The students come from various background and they have their own beliefs and understanding about learning, when exposed to a unique learning model they may have a unique or individual lived experience and also similar or shared lived experience. 56

CHAPTER 3 METHODOLOGY

This chapter is aimed to discuss the research inquiry used by the researcher for answering the research questions stated in Chapter I. It involves 6 primary sections successively namely research method, sources of data, Instruments, data gathering techniques, research procedure and data processing, and trustworthiness.

3.1 RESEARCH DESIGN

This thesis is aimed to describe the students experience when they learn writing text types using MOODLE in the classroom. Intergrating MOODLE or blended learning is a new phenomenon in the English Letters department accordingly phenomenology is applied, as it is one of the most profound research inquiry that would apply best for describing certain phenomenon occurred in human lives. The data was collected from classroom observation, in-depth interviews, in-depth re-interviews and some reflective notes to further validate the findings. I would hope to receive feedbacks that could help me out describe and articulate students understanding and to what extend MOODLE shape their perception which then manifested-into behavior in classroom. I sought to discover students experience based on what they understand, believe, feel and what they do toward the implementation of teaching writing using MOODLE.
