space and time. She has managed to prioritize her life better and getting better grades in writing. A good example is that most of her writing assignments and
homework are submitted on time, which was never a success for Lia prior attending writing 3 class and she also managed to submit her revised product on
time as well, which is just an icing on the cake. All of this sense of security has had more confidence in her writing.
Collaborative learning is also being highlighted in Lias struggle in writing. Although she preferred to work on her draft alone and wished that none
of her classmates examine her draft, she doesnt mind getting some input from her friends, a rather ironic circumstance. The personal messaging feature available in
MOODLE allows her to communicate with friends; it enables her to transfer knowledge to her friends and vice versa with some distance between them. It
allows her the freedom to work collaboratively outside of the classroom and without having to worry that her classmates have seen what she has been working
on.
4.1.3 Yenis Story
The last participant of this research was Yeni pseudonym. She came to Yogyakarta under the influence of her sister who previously had attended Sanata
Dharma University in the early 2000. She was born in Sragen, Central Java. Similarly to the first participant Alina, she is a Chinese in ethnicity but she grew
up in a working class family. Yeni was raised in a well facilitated family with a high level of discipline. Her father was a very dominant figure in the family and
always strives for success. That particular trait imprints in Yenis perspective in
77
her academic life. Yeni is a strong determined student who does not falter easily when dealing with her social or academic problems; she would go the distance to
achieve her goal. Yeni is a determined and independent young girl when it comes to study.
She has developed an interest in English since she was in grade 9 of high school. Unlike most high school students, their parents would usually be the one who
concerns for their childrens academic development, resulting hired tutors at home. In Yenis case it is quite the contrary. She was the one looking for private
tutors because she is well aware of the potential of English language for job opportunities in the future and she likes to be in control of her life.
Yeni is a young student who is quiet ambitious into becoming an editor. She enjoys reading English novels, from teen literature into a more serious
fictional novel such as Dean Koontzs Shattered Glass. She also enjoys translating English books into Bahasa Indonesia and vice versa. Her plan is to graduate at the
latest in 2014 and from there she hopes to be an intern in one of the most distinguished book publisher in Jakarta in the view of becoming a chief editor one
day. In high school years, Yenis activities were many she participated in student theater group, English debate society, and most importantly Journalism class. She
believes that having a good command of spoken and written English as well as developing critical thinking is an essential tool for progressing in her study.
Yeni enjoys watching most Hollywood movies and any kind of music, ranging from Pop, Soul, RnB, Rap and Hip Hop. She listens to it to enrich her
vocabularies and also to maintain her English. Sometimes she would create a
78
music video that provides lyrics in them so that other people know can sing along and she also translates her favorite English songs and music videos. She usually
access the internet to visit YouTube and then she would download her favorite videos, listens to the lyric carefully, write them down and attached her lyric on the
same music video using Windows Movie Maker and then upload that video back to YouTube to be enjoyed by other people.
She has received many positive comments on her effort which is a good thing to hear. She actually has done a few video editing jobs for her friends after
seeing her edited music videos on YouTube. She received Rp. 50.000 for editing a 60 minutes wedding videos. She was actually quite surprised that they trusted her
for editing such an important video. Other than video editing job, Yeni also accepts translation job, translating English documents into Bahasa Indonesia, the
later hobby however, yield better money much more enjoyable according to her. In college writing, she found that it can be a little tricky due to academic
conventions that everyone must follow. She found some problems that she had never experienced before. She indicated that during high schools years, she learns
very little in terms of text constructions as a whole. She learned more about vocabularies and sentence structure but never as a text as a whole for example the
correct use of transitional sentence to connect ideas from one paragraph to another, even if there was opportunities to do that, the explanations was
insufficient. Another example would be when she made a comparison between the explanations of recount text and personal narrative text, she noticed that during
high school her teacher did not make a sufficient explanation between the two text
79
and when she attended writing 3, she noticed the difference and arrived at a better conclusion between the two text. Another issue that she encounters during her
high school year was the lack of feedback that she received from her teacher. She believes that she is ahead of her friends in terms of grade was not only that she
study hard but also because she listens to her teacher, especially when she made mistakes and receives corrective feedback. She is in utmost believed that teachers
feedback is crucial in scaffolding process especially in learning writing text types and to listen to it is quintessential of a smart student.
Yeni confessed that she fancy the approach of learning writing text types in college. She is in fond of the discussion session when the lecturer presents two
distinct text of the same genre. She felt that by learning writing by having an example of the text that the students going to write and the lecturer give a
thorough explanations and then followed by text comparison really helps in avoiding the confusion between subgenres and in understanding the materials as a
whole. Furthermore she explained, in writing 3 class not only that she get enlightened through the explanation of text types but she was also very please due
to the fact that the class instructions was in the same league as other classes in other major universities in the capital city, that is by embracing the available
technology for learning. Apparently enough she is able to make this comparison since most of her friends are currently attending the same faculty as Yeni in the
capital city and they share their academic life quiet frequent. The experience that she get not only become a moral boost for her in front of her friends, which she
80
added as a great importance, but also in terms of enriching her knowledge and gaining skills for that particular subject is not to be taken for granted.
Yeni indicated that the presence of MOODLE is a joy for every student in writing 3 class. The full integration of internet in MOODLE has helped her in
many aspect of her learning. She believe that MOODLE has helped her to reorganized her academic life, it has helped her to understand more about her
materials, and further more MOODLE has helped her get a better grade. Yeni is a smart and tenacious student but like any student every now and then she forgets
things. She sometimes lost her study notes or important documents, with MOODLE she does not have to worry about experiencing such calamity since
MOODLE as a learning management system has a cloud service which enables its users to store their data.
Yeni can virtually write her notes in a word processor or in the word processor available in Moddle and saves it there. By storing her notes in a same
place as the materials and other important documents not only saves time but the sensation subconsciously helped to remember the materials itself, it spontaneously
trigger her working memory to function concerning any kind of information that she had about learning writing text types. In a way it resembles a jump start
towards whatever it is that she wants to work on. Secondly like the two other participant Yeni is also classified into Strauss
and Howes millennial generations where they immediately implicated by the economical and technological growth of internet. She tends to live her life with
the heavy presence of internet technology. She would spend four to five hours
81
soaking her eyes with the warm comfort of non-lethal, de-ionized laptop emissions to get through her day. She noticed that she is quiet attached to social
networking and mini games applications such as angry bird and piou piou aka flappy bird. When MOODLE is introduced at the beginning of the semester she
did not take much notice until it got hold onto her. She begin to visit it on a daily basis and admittedly she found that MOODLE has enough information to satisfy
her desires both socially and academically.
4.2 EMERGENT THEMES
