RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING

58 words, the core data was taken from the participants instead of the second hand lived experienced materials Patton 2002:104. Investigating new or arising issues signifies and not limiting the scope of the finding based on the design is a trademark of hermeneutics research and to accommodate such characteristics this study employ a progressive hermeneutics phenomenological study, that is the design of the study constantly modified according to the process and finding of the data and as such, the approach or the methodology of the research is derived from the process of the understanding the nature of the data Holliday 2002.

3.2 RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING

The participants experience will be the source of the data of this hermeneutics phenomenological inquiry which is in line with Miles and Huberman 1994: 9, the nature of qualitative data refer to essence of people, objects and situation; this would mean that the participants, the phenomena and also mean the researcher as well since to achieve a thick description of the participants experience the researcher must become part of that experience Van Manen: 2008. I limit the number and the scope of the participants in order to achieve a thick description of the phenomena. The number of the research participants was limited to only three participant taken into the consideration that two to ten participants are sufficient for conducting a phenomenological study Creswell: 1988. At the selection process, I handpicked the three participants in accordance to their level of computer literacy and their grade in writing 2 class. I used a preliminary semi-structured interview questions to see their current state of 59 being, this is done to obtain the level of willingness of the future candidate for the participants. Another method I use to determine the participants is that I observe the level of engagement in the classroom in the first three weeks of the course, prior to the effect of the phenomena. I selected the most active, average, and rather passive student to get a maximum variation of data. The kind of candidate that would be suitable or appropriate in participating in this research would be those who shares the same phenomena, and is intensely interested in understanding its nature and meaning, is willing to participate in a lengthy interview, and grants the researcher the right to tape record the interview and publish the data in dissertation or any other publications Moustakas 1994: 107. The first participant was Alina, brought up in Chinese household, she well facilitated and is a adept at using electronic gadget, and fond of surfing internet on a daily basis, she would spend hours non-consecutively on the internet for both entertainment and study reason, however on average she would spend more time for entertainment purpose. In terms of classroom engagement, she performs well during in the context of classroom discussion but lack in confidence in articulating ideas and needed to be pitched up. The second participant was Lia, she was brought up in multilingual background, her mother is Indonesian and her father was a Dutch in nationality. She is a proficient user of electronic devices and most popular software available nowadays. She is very competent in terms of articulating ideas verbally very clear in doing so. However she lacks the will power and the knowledge in writing even though is very conscious about it and determined to work in that department. This 60 is partly due to the fact that she undergone a different process of learning to speak without having to pay attention much at school, consequently she would either ignore or doesnt pay attention enough to academic discourse. The last of the participant was Yeni, similar to the first participant she is a Chinese in ethnicity and also well facilitated. She is also native in computer use and even took advantage of her knowledge to earn pocket money when she was younger. She is also very conscious in her approach in her study and her level of engagement is quiet high although assurance of knowledge can be a hindrance sometimes.
