4.1.1 Minas Story
The first participant of this research was Alina pseudonym She was born in Jakarta, November 27, 1992. She comes from upper-middle class family, where
his father is a successful restaurateur in Jakarta. She was raised in a Chinese populated housing complex in Jakarta and then moved to Yogyakarta after
graduating high school. Having raised in a financially established family, she was never short of opportunities to actualize herself in almost every aspect of her life.
She is fluent in English and quiet literate in most technology available today. Her past times were always away from academic life such as dining out with friends
and watching Korean dramas on TV cables or YouTube. However, she does enjoy occasional academic stint.
She was first exposed to English when she attended Buddhist school in year 2. English were considered great importance in that school, hence they try to
teach English to their students in their early stage of development. To her recollection, she remembered that the teachers taught the students some language
expressions and certain vocabularies that would complement the situations. Explicit grammar was never really taken into consideration when teaching English
in her primary school. Aside from attending formal schools, Alina, also had
69
private tutors to help with her English and mandarin. Raised as a typical upper middle class Chinese family, she had a far less joyful childhood. Her life was
always filled homework, revision of school materials with constant stuffing of extracurricular activities.
Her lack of musical quality means that she had to turn to computer to unwind most of the time; she would spend a couple of hours in front of laptop
computers or tablets to satisfy both her curiosity as well as her urges. Little did she know, like most of the y generations she became quiet drawn to all the
gimmicks available in todays market and had become enslaved in a way. Internet connection is a must and morning sip of screen radiation is one of the
constant urges that must be met daily. Nowadays, Alina would spend a couple of minutes in the morning just
before attending classes in USD for a quick updates on social networks or email notifications from her mobile phones and more screen radiation during lunch
breaks from her tablets or SAC computers and eventually went prime evil late in the afternoon and a couple of more screen radiation just before bedtime. Her
apparent fixation towards sophisticated abacus had a far reaching repercussion than she ever realized. She was anti social at one point of her life, and was
become more sensitive when addressed to a certain issue such as her past life. On a positive note, however, her capacity to understand basic mechanics of most
computer programs and most websites available on the internet has had positive impact in her academic life.
70
Alina has a good understanding of the mechanics of most computer programs, as do students at her age and she eloquently state that it has bring a
sense of convenience in her study life in particular in her college years, and apparently this is the setting which I am keen to explore. She would search
anything on the internet and use it a reference or as a cross reference for homework and assignments. She is seasoned enough to understand that not
everything on the internet can be taken into account seriously, especially when dealing with scientific writings.
Since high school and throughout her college years Alina has been involved in various student activities or extra-curricular activities. One activity
that she greatly fond of was English debate. As a person who is quiet jovial she indicated that to be involved in a debate, to win arguments, is very satisfying and
she felt that she get a sense of freedom, but this only happens when she is not busy tanning her facial skin with non-ionizing radiation from her laptop
computers. Another activity that Alina has some interest is in writing, whether it is writing for academic purpose or just for filling the void in her diary or
presumably her heart. In the context of academic writing, Alina never really had any trouble in terms of liberating her ideas into words but admittedly has some
issues in her word choices, language features and structuring her ideas. She considers herself as a neat and detailed students, hence, every piece of writing that
she did, she always allot some time to double checked for mistakes and make any necessary revision if needed.
71
Alina is a conscious and critical student in the classroom. She pays attention to her teacherlecturer and often notice the way instructions were carried.
She also indicates that sometimes she lends a helping hand to her friends if need be. She is in great belief that working together as a unit will yield a better result in
any instances of life, in particular academic life. In terms of technology use in classroom pedagogy, Alina is also in great belief that technology has greatly
rooted in all fabric of life in the 21
st
century, especially to the students who grew up in the information era. Hence, it is not surprise that there is a trend in recent
years in Indonesia that educators in formal institution embrace the emerging technology in their pedagogy.
She indicated that she is in great support of such ideas and it has reciprocal relationship to the students such as herself. In her perspective, she believes that
education and technology are interwoven and cannot be separated. A good analogy from her was LCD projector, even though LCD projector does not have
any thinking capacity like computer does but it would still help her with pointing her ideas. She mentioned LCD projector is one of the essential teaching and
learning equipment in classroom, it is something that every formal education must have. If a student move to a school that does not have any LCD projector and still
relies on black board, then it would mean that one aspects of the classroom is undermining her effort to study. Now to put technology such as, internet or laptop
computers into equation, she indicated that nowadays everybody uses internet, and education institution must keep up to the pace in order to nullify all potential
handicap that could interfere or undermine the students effort in their study. In
72
some sense, students actually expect at least their high school or college to be in the same level of computer literacy as their students.
In terms of the application of MOODLE in one of Alinas course in Sanata Dharma University, she was greatly appreciative on what has been done; an
innovative approach has been conducted in the classroom. She felt that the practicality of MOODLE has helped her in organizing and prioritizing her study
life. One notable feature that worked wonders for her was concerning the nature of cloud services. Like all other cloud services, MOODLE as an LMS inherently
has cloud services for its users to store and keep track of the data; it allows students to upload and download assignments and store the assignments for future
needs. Meaning to say, the hustle and tussle of campus life can be reduced allowing students to concentrate more on knowledge building and in short she
does not need to worry about losing her documents and consequently better classroom performance.
