Offer – Acceptance Refusal Types of Adjacency Pairs in the Modern Script of Romeo and Juliet Movie
the conversation that contains agreement or disagreement. In Romeo and Juliet movie, there are 20 assertion–agreementdisagreement adjacency pairs. Three of
them are discussed here as the examples. The first conversation that contains assertion – agreementdisagreement
adjacency pair is the conversation between Romeo and Juliet. 4:19
ROMEO: taking JULIET’s hand Your hand is like a holy place that my hand is unworthy to visit.
If you’re offended by the touch of my hand, my two lips are standing here like blushing pilgrims, ready to make things
better with a kiss.
JULIET: Good pilgrim, you don’t give your hand enough credit. By holding my hand you show polite devotion.
After all, pilgrims touch the hands of statues of saints. Holding one palm against another is like a kiss.

The conversation above takes place in the ballroom where Capulet’s party is being held. Romeo has a chance to talk to Juliet because they dance together.
By taking Juliet’s hands, Romeo asserts that Juliet’s hands are like precious things that no one like Romeo could have. Romeo states “Your hand is like a holy place
that my hand is unworthy to visit”. Romeo considers Juliet as a precious thing and again Romeo states that if his hand hurts Juliet, his lips are ready to give the cure
with a kiss. In the second part of the conversation, Juliet disagrees to what Romeo has said. For her, Romeo’s hand is worthy enough to touch her hand and she even
says that by holding her hand, Romeo has showed his polite devotion. It can be
seen from what Juliet has said “… you don’t give your hand enough credit. By holding my hand you show polite devotion”.
Therefore, it is proven that the first part of the conversation contains assertion and the second part contains disagreement. Therefore, it can be said that
the conversation above contains assertion – agreementdisagreement adjacency pair.
The researcher presents another example of conversation that has assertion – agreementdisagreement adjacency pair. The conversation is as follows.
4:20
JULIET : I’d give anything to keep them from seeing you here. ROMEO: The darkness will hide me from them. And if you don’t love me, let
them find me here. I’d rather they killed me than have to live without your love.

The conversation above is still a conversation between Romeo and Juliet. In the conversation, Juliet declares or asserts that she will give anything just to
hide Romeo from her men. The conversation below happens in the balcony of Juliet’s bedroom. Romeo is brave enough to breach into Capulet’s house just to
meet Juliet from below her balcony. As the response of Juliet’s assertion, Romeo answers that Juliet does not need to do it because the darkness already protects
Romeo from other people.
The above conversation is an assertion – agreementdisagreement because the first part contains declaration of assertion from Juliet that she will do anything
to hide Romeo. In the second part of the conversation, Romeo expresses his disagreement toward Juliet’s assertion because the darkness already helps Romeo
to hide. The last example of assertion – agreementdisagreement adjacency pair
can be seen in the following conversation. 4:21
JULIET : If they see you, they’ll murder you. ROMEO: Alas, one angry look from you would be worse than twenty of your
relatives with swords. Just look at me kindly, and I’m invincible against their hatred.

The conversation above involves Romeo and Juliet. In the conversation, both Romeo and Juliet are planning something about their relationship. They talk
in the darkness; Juliet is in her balcony and Romeo is on the ground covered by the darkness. In the first part of the conversation, Juliet asserts that if someone
sees Romeo below her balcony, he would die “If they see you, they’ll murder you”. The statement is uttered by Juliet because she knows that Romeo is her
family’s greatest enemy. Romeo responds it with a disagreement. For him, Juliet’s angry look is far more dangerous than Capulet’s men with swords.
It is clear that the first part of the conversation is an assertion and the second part of the conversation contains a response from Romeo with his
disagreement. Therefore, it can be said that the conversation above is an assertion – agreementdisagreement adjacency pair.
