Preferred The Preference Sequences in the Modern Script of Romeo and Juliet Movie

4:33 JULIET : I haven’t heard you say a hundred words yet, but I recognize the sound of your voice. Aren’t you Romeo? And aren’t you a Montague? ROMEO : I am neither of those things if you dislike them P : 1. Romeo, 2. Juliet S : Juliet’s balcony LF : dispreferred APACT-2S2P2Q-A-Q The above conversation contains dispreferred structure. The conversation is conducted between Juliet and Romeo after they meet under the Juliet’s balcony. Romeo calls Juliet from beneath and Juliet recognizes the voice. She suspects that it is Romeo who calls her down but Romeo’s answer is unexpected. In spite of claiming his real identity, Romeo says that he is not what Juliet mentions only if Juliet does not like it. Based on the analysis of the conversation, it can be seen that the second part of the conversation is a dispreferred structure because it contains rejection to the question.

3. The Functions of Responses in the Modern Script of Romeo and Juliet Movie

Every dialogue has feedback or response within the topic of conversation. In Romeo and Juliet movie, there are only four types of response function in the adjacency pair; they are responding to statement, question, request, and offer and invitation. The researcher does not find any response to apology and thank.

a. Responding to Statement

When a speaker makes a statement, he or she expects a reply. In Romeo and Juliet movie, there are 30 responses to statements. The writer only takes two of the responses as the examples because the rest have the similar type of response. The first example is as follows. 4:34 ROMEO: taking JULIET’s hand Your hand is like a holy place that my hand is unworthy to visit. If you’re offended by the touch of my hand, my two lips are standing here like blushing pilgrims, ready to make things better with a kiss. JULIET: Good pilgrim, you don’t give your hand enough credit. By holding my hand you show polite devotion. After all, pilgrims touch the hands of statues of saints. Holding one palm against another is like a kiss. P : 1. Romeo, 2. Juliet S : Juliet’s balcony LF : Responding to statement APACT-1S5P5A-AD+S The conversation above is the conversation between Romeo and Juliet. In the conversation, Romeo states that Juliet’s hand is just like a holy place that Romeo’s hand unworthy to touch. Juliet in her response says that Romeo’s hand is good enough to touch her hand and she considers Romeo’s touch as a polite devotion. Thus, it can be said that the adjacency pair above has the second part which responds to the statement in the first part. Another example of response to statement is shown in the following conversation. It is the conversation between Juliet and Romeo during their secret meeting at night. The conversation is as follows. 4:35 JULIET : I’d give anything to keep them from seeing you here. ROMEO: The darkness will hide me from them. And if you don’t love me, let them find me here. I’d rather they killed me than have to live without your love. P : 1. Romeo, 2. Juliet S : Juliet’s balcony LF : Responding to statement APACT-2S2P3A-AD+S The conversation above shows that Juliet, in the first part of the conversation, expresses her statement that she would do anything to hide Romeo during their secret meeting. In the response, Romeo says that the darkness is good enough to hide him from the other people. Therefore, it can be said that the adjacency pair above has the second part which responds to the statement in the first part.

b. Responding to Question

A question expects a proper answer. However, not all the answers are proper in the sense that they really answer the interviewer’s question. In Romeo and Juliet movie, there are 22 adjacency pairs that have responses to the question. The two of them will be used as the example here. The first example of the response toward question is the conversation between Juliet and Romeo. The conversation is as follows. 4:36 JULIET: I haven’t heard you say a hundred words yet, but I recognize the sound of your voice. Aren’t you Romeo? And aren’t you a Montague? ROMEO: I am neither of those things if you dislike them. P : 1. Romeo, 2. Juliet S : Juliet’s Balcony LF : Responding to question APACT-2S2P3Q-A-Q
