Blame Accusation – Admission Denial

In Romeo and Juliet movie, there are six offer–acceptancerefusal adjacency pairs but only three of them are discussed here. The first example of offer–acceptancerefusal adjacency pair is the conversation between Juliet and Romeo. Both of them are falling in love to each other and here is their conversation. 4:16 JULIET: I pledged my love to you before you asked me to. Yet I wish I could take that promise back, so I had it to give again. ROMEO: You would take it back? Why would you do that, my love? P : 1. Romeo, 2. Juliet S : Juliet Balcony LF : Offer-Acceptance APACT-2S2P5O-AR-O-I The conversation above happens between Juliet and Romeo; the place is below Juliet’s bedroom. Juliet talks from her balcony, while Romeo is in the garden. In the conversation, Juliet says that she loves Romeo even before he asks her to do so. To prove her love, Juliet offers to take her vow back so that she could give the vow to Romeo when he asks for it. Romeo answers that her action of taking her vow back is not necessary. He even asks the reasons why Juliet wants to give back the vow. It is clear that the first part of the conversation contains an offer by Juliet to take her vow back. Whereas in the second part of the conversation, Romeo responds that Juliet does not need to take her vow back; it is because he knows that she loves him very much. More examples of offer–acceptancerefusal adjacency pair can be found in the following conversation. This conversation is between Lady Capulet and Juliet. 4:17 LADY CAPULET: Find out the way, and I’ll find the right man. But now I have joyful news for you, girl. JULIET : And it’s good to have joy in such a joyless time. What’s the news? Please tell me. P : 1. Lady Capulet, 2. Juliet S : Juliet’s room LF : Offer-Acceptance APACT-3S5P5O-AR+O-I In the conversation above, Lady Capulet is talking to Juliet, her daughter. The conversation takes time after Juliet’s cousin has been killed by one of Romeo’s men in a fight. Because of the killing, lady Capulet is cursing Romeo as villain and she wants Juliet to leave and forget Romeo by offering her joyful news “But now I have joyful news for you, girl”. Apparently, Lady Capulet wants Juliet not to be sad anymore about the death of Tybalt. The good news that lady Capulet brings is easy to guess but Juliet is acting that she is really excited by the news. She accepts the offer to hear the good news from her mother by saying “And it’s good to have joy in such joyless time”. Moreover, to make her mother believe that she really gets excited, Juliet says eagerly “What’s the news? Please tell me”. From the analysis above, it is seen that the first part of the conversation contains offer from Lady Capulet to Juliet, and the second part of the conversation contains the acceptance from Juliet. Hence, the conversation above is said as offer–acceptancerefusal adjacency pair. Another example of offer–acceptancerefusal adjacency pair can be seen in the following conversation. The conversation is between Lady Capulet and her husband. 4:18 LADY CAPULET : No, not until Thursday. There’s plenty of time. CAPULET : Go, Nurse, go with her. We’ll have the wedding at the church tomorrow. P : 1. Lady Capulet, 2. Capulet S :Capulet’s Room LF : Offer-Acceptance APACT-4S2P3O-AR+O-I In their conversation, they talk about Juliet’s wedding. Both of them have a plan to marry Juliet with Count Paris and the wedding would be held in the very near future. Lady Capulet offers her husband that the wedding should be done before Thursday. As a response, her husband accepts the offer and even decides that the wedding should be done the next day. Based on the analysis above, the conversation can be said as offer– acceptancerefusal adjacency pair because the first part of the conversation is an offer and the second part contains an acceptance.

g. Assertion – Agreement Disagreement

The type of adjacency pair found in Romeo and Juliet movie is assertion – agreementdisagreement adjacency pair. This type of adjacency pair is identified by the first part of the conversation that contains assertion and the second part of the conversation that contains agreement or disagreement. In Romeo and Juliet movie, there are 20 assertion–agreementdisagreement adjacency pairs. Three of them are discussed here as the examples. The first conversation that contains assertion – agreementdisagreement adjacency pair is the conversation between Romeo and Juliet. 4:19 ROMEO: taking JULIET’s hand Your hand is like a holy place that my hand is unworthy to visit. If you’re offended by the touch of my hand, my two lips are standing here like blushing pilgrims, ready to make things better with a kiss. JULIET: Good pilgrim, you don’t give your hand enough credit. By holding my hand you show polite devotion. After all, pilgrims touch the hands of statues of saints. Holding one palm against another is like a kiss. P : 1. Romeo, 2. Juliet S : The party LF : Assertion-disagreement APACT-1S5P5A-AD+S The conversation above takes place in the ballroom where Capulet’s party is being held. Romeo has a chance to talk to Juliet because they dance together. By taking Juliet’s hands, Romeo asserts that Juliet’s hands are like precious things that no one like Romeo could have. Romeo states “Your hand is like a holy place that my hand is unworthy to visit”. Romeo considers Juliet as a precious thing and again Romeo states that if his hand hurts Juliet, his lips are ready to give the cure with a kiss. In the second part of the conversation, Juliet disagrees to what Romeo has said. For her, Romeo’s hand is worthy enough to touch her hand and she even says that by holding her hand, Romeo has showed his polite devotion. It can be
