AcceptanceRefusal. There are 12 more conversations in the movie that have similar pattern like the three examples above.
d. Command – Compliance Incompliance
The next type of adjacency pair is command – complianceincompliance. To fulfill the condition as command – complianceincompliance adjacency pair,
the first part should be a command or an order and the second part of the conversation is a compliance obedience Incompliance disobedience.
In the movie, there are 12 Command – ComplianceIncompliance adjacency pairs, and three of them are discussed here. The first conversation that
contains Command
– ComplianceIncompliance
adjacency pair
is the
conversation between Juliet and Romeo. At that time, Romeo and Juliet are having a conversation in their secret place; as the morning is getting brighter,
Juliet asks Romeo to leave. The conversation between them is as follows. 4:10
JULIET: Get out of here, be gone, go away It’s the lark that sings so out of
tune, making such harsh noise. Some say the lark makes a sweet division between day and night. It’s not true because she separates us.
Some say the lark traded its eyes with the toad. Oh, now I wish they had traded voices too Because the lark’s voice tears us out of each
other’s arms, and now there will be men hunting for you. Oh, go away now.
I see more and more light.
ROMEO: More and more light. More and more pain for us.

S : Juliet Balcony
LF : Command-Compliance APACT-3S5P2C-CI+R
The conversation above is the conversation between Juliet and Romeo in their favorite secret place. They love to meet in that place because no one knows
it. The first part of the conversation contains a command. It could be indicated by the use of exclamation mark. Juliet says “Get out of here, be gone, go away”. She
asks Romeo to leave because it has already been dawn and the day is getting brighter. Juliet is afraid that someone will know that she meets Romeo secretly.
Juliet repeats her command twice “Oh go away now”. As a response, Romeo does not directly obey the command. He stays
where he is. He says “more and more light. More and more pain for us”; the statement could be considered as Romeo’s incompliance because he refuses to go.
For him, the daybreak is a painful time as he has to leave Juliet. According to the theory in Chapter II, the above conversation can be said
as command – complianceIncompliance adjacency pair because the first part is the command and the second part contains the incompliance.
To have more detailed example and explanation about Command – ComplianceIncompliance adjacency pairs in the movie, here is another
conversation taken from the movie. The following conversation is the conversation between Tybalt and Romeo. The conversation is as follows.
4:11
TYBALT: Boy, your words can’t excuse the harm you’ve done to me. So now turn and draw your sword.
ROMEO: I disagree. I’ve never done you harm. I love you more than you can
understand until you know the reason why I love you. And so, good Capulet—which is a name I love like my own name—you should be
satisfied with what I say.
P : 1. Tybalt, 2.Romeo
S : Somewhere in public space
LF : Command-Incompliance APACT-3S1P3C-CI-R
The conversation takes place in a public space and there is a fight between Capulet and Montague families where Tybalt represents Capulet family and
Romeo is in the other side. Tybalt commands that Romeo draws his sword and fights him “So now turn and draw your sword”. Tybalt is angry because he thinks
Romeo puts any harm on him in one occasion and he wants him to pay for it. Romeo responds that he would not draw his sword as he loves him. He loves
Tybalt because Tybalt is one of Capulets, the family where Juliet belongs into. Romeo does not want to harm Tybalt because it would hurt Juliet. Romeo states “I
love you more than you can understand until you know the reason why I love you. And so, good Capulet— which is a name I love like my own name”. It is because
Tybalt comes from Capulets that make Romeo do not want to fight Tybalt. Therefore, Romeo expresses his incompliance by saying “I disagree”.
From the detail above, it can be seen that the first part of the conversation contains the command from Tybalt to Romeo to draw his sword. In the second
part of the conversation, Romeo responds it by expressing his incompliance to do what Tybalt has commanded. Therefore, the conversation above can be said as
Command-ComplianceIncompliance Adjacency Pair. Another example of conversation that contains an adjacency pair is as
follows. 4:12
NURSE : Get out of here What kind of man are you?
MERCUTIO: I’m a man, my lady, that God has made for himself to ruin.
P : 1. Nurse, 2. Mercutio
S : Romeo’s home
LF : Command-Compliance APACT-3S1P7C-CI+R
The conversation above is between the Nurse and Mercutio. The nurse is the person who takes care of Juliet and Mercutio is a Montague family. At that
time, the Nurse is in a hurry to meet Romeo and she finds him along with some of his men. Romeo’s men mock her all the time and try to make her angry. She does
not have any business with Romeo’s men, so she orders him to get out of the room as she wants to talk to Romeo privately. The Nurse gives a command to
Mercutio to get out by saying “Get out of here”. However, Mercutio ignores the command and keeps talking and answering the Nurse.
The above
conversation is
command –
complianceincompliance Adjacency Pair because the first pair is the command and the response in the
second part is incompliance to the command. There are nine more conversations that have the similar command – complianceincompliance Adjacency Pair
pattern.
e. Blame Accusation – Admission Denial
The next type of Adjacency Pair is BlameAccusation–Admission Denial. This type of Adjacency Pair should contain blame or accusation in the first part of
the conversation and the second part or the response should contain admission or denial of the first part.
In Romeo and Juliet movie, there are nine BlameAccusation– AdmissionDenial Adjacency Pairs, but not all of them are discussed here. The
writer only uses three of them in the analysis. The first conversation that contains BlameAccusation–Admission Denial Adjacency Pair is as follows.
4:13
ROMEO: Ah, Juliet if you’re as happy as I am, and you’re better with words, tell me about the happiness you imagine we’ll have in our marriage.
JULIET: I can imagine more than I can say—I have more on my mind than words. Anyone who can count how much he has is poor. My true
love has made me so rich that I can’t count even half of my wealth.
P : 1. Romeo, 2. Juliet
S : Juliet Balcony
LF : Accusation-Denial APACT-2S6P2BA-AD-O-I
The conversation is between Romeo and Juliet who are falling in love to each other and they have planned for their marriage. At that time, Romeo and
Juliet meet in a church to discuss their marriage with Friar Lawrence. Romeo thinks that Juliet is not as happy as he is about their love and relationship. Romeo
accuses Juliet of being not too happy; therefore, he wants Juliet to express her happiness with words. In the response part, Juliet denies him that she is not as
happy as Romeo. She even states that she could not say more happiness because she has too much happiness in her imagination.
The conversation above contains blameaccusation – admission denial Adjacency Pair because the first part of the conversation contains accusation and
the second part or the response contains the denial or the accusation. To get clearer detail about blameaccusation – admission denial Adjacency Pair in the
