Command – Compliance Incompliance Types of Adjacency Pairs in the Modern Script of Romeo and Juliet Movie

In Romeo and Juliet movie, there are nine BlameAccusation– AdmissionDenial Adjacency Pairs, but not all of them are discussed here. The writer only uses three of them in the analysis. The first conversation that contains BlameAccusation–Admission Denial Adjacency Pair is as follows. 4:13 ROMEO: Ah, Juliet if you’re as happy as I am, and you’re better with words, tell me about the happiness you imagine we’ll have in our marriage. JULIET: I can imagine more than I can say—I have more on my mind than words. Anyone who can count how much he has is poor. My true love has made me so rich that I can’t count even half of my wealth. P : 1. Romeo, 2. Juliet S : Juliet Balcony LF : Accusation-Denial APACT-2S6P2BA-AD-O-I The conversation is between Romeo and Juliet who are falling in love to each other and they have planned for their marriage. At that time, Romeo and Juliet meet in a church to discuss their marriage with Friar Lawrence. Romeo thinks that Juliet is not as happy as he is about their love and relationship. Romeo accuses Juliet of being not too happy; therefore, he wants Juliet to express her happiness with words. In the response part, Juliet denies him that she is not as happy as Romeo. She even states that she could not say more happiness because she has too much happiness in her imagination. The conversation above contains blameaccusation – admission denial Adjacency Pair because the first part of the conversation contains accusation and the second part or the response contains the denial or the accusation. To get clearer detail about blameaccusation – admission denial Adjacency Pair in the movie, the writer takes another conversation from the movie. The conversation is as follows. 4:14 GREGORY: That means you’re the weak one, because weaklings get pushed up against the wall. SAMPSON: You’re right. That’s why girls get pushed up against walls—they’re weak. So what I’ll do is push the Montague men into the street and the Montague women up against the wall. P : 1. Gregory, 2. Sampson S : Public Space LF : Accusation-Admission APACT-1S1P2BA-AD+S The conversation above is between Gregory and Sampson who are Capulet’s servants. They get involved in their masters’ fight. The conversation above happens when Gregory meets the servant from Capulet family, the enemy of his masters. In the conversation, Gregory accuses Sampson as a weak man because he lets the Montague being mocked and pushed him against the wall. The accusation done by Gregory is “That means you’re the weak one”. Sampson responds it in an admission by saying “You’re right”. Since the first part of the conversation contains accusation and the second part contains admission, the conversation above is regarded as blameaccusation – admission denial Adjacency Pair. One more example of conversation that contains this type of adjacency pair is as follows. 4:15 ROMEO : You scolded me often for loving Rosaline. FRIAR LAWRENCE: I scolded you for obsessing about her, not for loving her, my student. P : 1. Romeo, 2. Friar Lawrence S : Church LF : Accusation-Admission APACT-2S3P3BA-AD+S The conversation above is between Romeo and Friar Lawrence. Romeo comes to the church and meets Friar Lawrence because he wants to get some advice related to his love to Juliet, the Capulet’s daughter. Unfortunately, Friar Lawrence seems to blame Romeo for his past. Romeo accuses Friar Lawrence of his past with Rosaline. Rosaline was Romeo’s girlfriend and unfortunately, she was also a nun. Romeo accusation is “You scolded me often for loving Rosaline” The accusation is said directly to Friar Lawrence and he makes his denial by saying “I scolded you for obsessing about her, not for loving her, my student”. It is an indirect denial. Friar Lawrence does not say “no” but he argues with reason and fact. From the analysis above, it is said that the conversation above contains blameaccusation – admission denial Adjacency Pair. The reason is that the first part of the conversation is the accusation and the second part or the response contains the denial.

f. Offer – Acceptance Refusal

The next type of Adjacency Pair found in Romeo and Juliet movie is offer – acceptancerefusal adjacency pair. This type of adjacency pair can be identified by the offer in the first part of the conversation and there is an acceptance or refusal in the second part of the conversation. In Romeo and Juliet movie, there are six offer–acceptancerefusal adjacency pairs but only three of them are discussed here. The first example of offer–acceptancerefusal adjacency pair is the conversation between Juliet and Romeo. Both of them are falling in love to each other and here is their conversation. 4:16 JULIET: I pledged my love to you before you asked me to. Yet I wish I could take that promise back, so I had it to give again. ROMEO: You would take it back? Why would you do that, my love? P : 1. Romeo, 2. Juliet S : Juliet Balcony LF : Offer-Acceptance APACT-2S2P5O-AR-O-I The conversation above happens between Juliet and Romeo; the place is below Juliet’s bedroom. Juliet talks from her balcony, while Romeo is in the garden. In the conversation, Juliet says that she loves Romeo even before he asks her to do so. To prove her love, Juliet offers to take her vow back so that she could give the vow to Romeo when he asks for it. Romeo answers that her action of taking her vow back is not necessary. He even asks the reasons why Juliet wants to give back the vow. It is clear that the first part of the conversation contains an offer by Juliet to take her vow back. Whereas in the second part of the conversation, Romeo responds that Juliet does not need to take her vow back; it is because he knows that she loves him very much.
