adjacency pair is in the sixth place with 8 occurrences or 8. Offer-acceptrefusal is in the seventh position with 6 occurrences or 6 and summon-answer is in the
eighth position with 4 occurrences or 4. The adjacency pair with the smallest occurrences is greeting-greeting with only 3 occurrences or 3 of the total
occurrences. Secondly, from 100 occurences in the movie, it can be concluded that there are 72 occurrences of preferred social acts and 28 occurrences of
dispreferred social acts. Thirdly, there are four types of response found in the movie, namely
responding to statement, to question, to request, and to an offer and an invitation. The other two types of response, namely responding to apology and responding to
thank, do not occur in the movie. The study shows that the response to statement dominates the frequency of the occurrences with 36 times of occurences followed
by responding to a request which occurs 28 times. In addition, question appears 21 times, while offer and invitation occur 15 times.
From the explanation above, it can be concluded that from 100 adjacency pairs in Romeo and Juliet movie script, there are nine types of adjacency pairs and
72 occurrences of preferred social acts and 28 occurrences of dispreferred social acts. The responses of 100 adjacency pairs are divided into four types: responding
to request, offer and invitation, statement, and question.
B. Suggestion
Based on the finding of this research, it is recommended for the readers to determine the types of
adjacency pairs
. They could have good comprehension on context and content of the movie by reading the modern movie script and
watching the movie
. It will help them to avoid wrong interpretation of the movie.
The researcher proposes some suggestions as follows. 1.
To the Readers By reading Pragmatics researches, the public can enrich their knowledge how
meaning in language is conveyed and perceived. The public is expected to read many Pragmatics researches, especially about adjacency pairs. Adjacency pairs
exists not only in everyday conversation, but also in movies. One interesting aspect of a movie is the conversations between the characters to make the story
flow well.
2. To Linguistics Students in English Department, Yogyakarta State University
As an English student, especially majoring in linguistics, it is important to consider the language use especially English language in practice. It is influenced
by the context around it. By reading this research, it is expected that the students, especially linguistic students, will learn more about the study of language under
pragmatic approach. The students majoring linguistics are supposed to learn pragmatics seriously. It is very important because pragmatics is the basic study to
learn the meaning behind a sentence.
3. To Future Researcher
It is also recommended for the next researchers who are interested in doing further research in this area to use the findings in this study as a starting point b
efore
conducting their own research. They can take different topics of study, such as a study on the deixis in Romeo and Juliet movie.
