P : 1. Romeo, 2. Juliet

LF : Responding to statement APACT-2S2P3A-AD+S
The conversation above shows that Juliet, in the first part of the conversation, expresses her statement that she would do anything to hide Romeo during their
secret meeting. In the response, Romeo says that the darkness is good enough to hide him from the other people. Therefore, it can be said that the adjacency pair
above has the second part which responds to the statement in the first part.
b. Responding to Question
A question expects a proper answer. However, not all the answers are proper in the sense that they really answer the interviewer’s question. In Romeo
and Juliet movie, there are 22 adjacency pairs that have responses to the question. The two of them will be used as the example here.
The first example of the response toward question is the conversation between Juliet and Romeo. The conversation is as follows.
4:36 JULIET: I haven’t heard you say a hundred words yet, but I recognize the sound
of your voice. Aren’t you Romeo? And aren’t you a Montague? ROMEO: I am neither of those things if you dislike them.
P : 1. Romeo, 2. Juliet
S : Juliet’s Balcony
LF : Responding to question APACT-2S2P3Q-A-Q
The above conversation shows that Juliet asks someone who is approaching her balcony at night. She suspects that it is Romeo who approaches
her balcony. Juliet asks “Aren’t you Romeo? And aren’t you a Montague?”. In the second part of the conversation, Romeo answers that he is Romeo and also a
Montague. Hence, it can be said that the adjacency pair above has a response to a question.
Another example of a response toward a question can be seen in the following conversation.
4:37
JULIET: Who told you how to get here below my bedroom? ROMEO: Love showed me the way—the same thing that made me looked for
you in the first place. Love told me what to do, and I let love borrow
my eyes. I’m not a sailor, but if you were across the far the sea, I would risk everything to gain you.
P : 1. Romeo, 2. Juliet
S : Juliet’s balcony
LF : Responding to question APACT-2S2P4Q-A+Q
The conversation above is an adjacency pair that has a response to a question. It can be seen that in the first part of the conversation, Juliet asks Romeo who orders
him to go below her bedroom. In the second part of the adjacency pair, Romeo answers that it is his love that shows him the way to Juliet’s bedroom. That is why
it can be said that the above adjacency pair contains a response to the question.
c. Responding to Request
In Romeo and Juliet movie, there are 28 adjacency pairs that have responses to request. However, the writer does not discuss them all. She only
takes two as the examples. The first example of adjacency pair with response to request is as follows.
4:38
ROMEO: Sin from my lips? You encourage crime with your sweetness. Give me my sin back.
They kiss again
JULIET: You kiss like you’ve studied how.
P : 1. Romeo, 2. Juliet
S : Juliet’s balcony
LF : Responding to request APACT-1S5P5R-FA+R
The conversation is between Romeo and Juliet. They have their romantic time, kissing each other. In the first part of the adjacency pair, Romeo requests
Juliet to return his sin back so that he could kiss Juliet again and again. In the second part of the adjacency pair, Juliet says “You kiss like you’ve studied how”
which means they have kissed again and Juliet responds to Romeo’s request by doing what he wants, to kiss Juliet. Thus, it can be said that the adjacency pair
contains the response to the request. Another example of adjacency pair that has a response to a request can be seen in
the following conversation. 4:38
JULIET: It’s almost morning. I want to make you go, but I’d only let you go as far as a spoiled child lets his pet bird go. He lets the bird hop
a little from his hand and then yanks him back by a string.
ROMEO: I wish I was your bird.
