Academic words mastered 60 by the twelve grade students in SMA Negeri 1 Wonosari

According to the table, the students are able to master 2 of 19 adverbs in academic vocabulary tests. It is 10.52 of all adverbs tested. Therefore, it can be concluded that the students are able to master the words, i.e. conversely and solely. The analysis result presented in the tables above shows the students’ mastery of academic words based on the percentage and the lexical category. It can be seen in the table that the academic words mastered 55 up to 100 are 583 words. They consist of 326 nouns, 120 verbs, 115 adjectives, 19 adverbs, and 3 conjunctions. The calculation of the students’ mastery of academic words is counted from 55 up to 100 since the percentages show that there are more than a half of the samples are able to master the words well. The findings also show that most of the twelve grade students in SMA Negeri 1 Wonosari have good mastery of academic words. It can be seen from the mean score of 120 students who are taken as the samples of the research, i.e. 90.40. This mean score represents the students’ mastery of academic words based on the entire scores they obtained from the academic vocabulary tests. In conclusion, the twelve grade students’ mastery of academic words is good since they are able to master 583 of 600 academic words tested. They are able to achieve the minimal standard of mastering academic vocabulary for beginner level, i.e. 570 words based on Nation, 2002.

4.2 The Correlation between Academic Words Mastery and the Students’ English Productive Skills

This section discusses the correlation between the twelfth grade students’ mastery of academic words and the students’ productive skills and it is the answer to the second problem in this research. The number of academic words is analyzed and discussed in the previous discussion, i.e. 583 academic words. It means that the twelve grade students in SMA Negeri 1 Wonosari have good mastery of academic vocabulary items because the minimal standard of academic words mastered for beginner is 570 words. The twelfth grade students are able to master more than 570 words included verbs, adjectives, nouns, adverbs, and conjunctions. Therefore, it can be said that the students are able to achieve the minimal standard of mastering academic words for beginner level in terms of knowing or understanding the meanings of the words, i.e. understanding the Indonesian equivalences.

4.2.1 Data Presentation

In the research, the students’ productive skills were tested in the final examination. Their speaking and writing skills were tested practically. After knowing the students’ mastery of academic words, the correlation between academic words mastery and the students’ productive skills is discussed in this section. The twelfth grade students’ productive skills are represented by the final scores achieved in the practice examination.
