As stated in chapter II, potentiality refers to the condition resulted from someone‟s act or by nature. However, it also shows whether something is able to
happen or not. Related to potentiality, another modality employed by Ivanka Trump is
ability. As mentioned in the analysis of Ivanka Trump‟s type of modality, ability
is the state whether someone is able to or knows how to do something. There are several examples of potentiality and ability taken from Ivanka Trump‟s speech
that will be discussed below. In 2, the modal which is used to show potentiality is could. The modal is
followed by auxiliary verb be and an adjective great. The subject of the sentence is life. This sentence means that the officers are potential to feel that life is great
again after they meet Donald Trump. By saying this, Ivanka Trump would like to say officers are potential to have a great life that because of Donald Trump.
In 4, the modal which is used is could. The modal is followed by passive verb which is be done. The subject of the sentence is he which refers to Donald
Trump. The sentence means that by asking the officers, Donald Trump will be able to know what is potential to be done better. In this case, the modal is used to
express something that is potential to be done better. Modal in 6 is will. This modal is followed by verb have. However, there
is a negation never which means that it will not happen. The subject that follows is you. This modal is categorized as potentiality because there is a reason as a
trigger. Based on the theory by Lock 1995, potentiality is a condition caused by someone‟s ability. It can be proved by 6. Ivanka Trump says that if Americans
have Donald Trump in the corner, which means as a president, it is potential for them to never feel worried. In this case, the clause that becomes the cause is
Donald Trump ability which enables him to make a secure feeling for the Americans.
The last example is 9. The modal which is found in 9 is will. This modal is followed by auxiliary verb be and adjective possible. Ivanka Trump says
come January 17. When Ivanka Trump produces the sentence, she has not known what possibly happen. The fact is not clear yet. The modal will in 9 is used as
one indicator that it is still a potentiality. It may happen or not. In sentence 5, Ivanka Trump employs modal will to show potentiality.
The subject of the sentence is he which refers to Donald Trump. The first modal is
followed by auxiliary verb be and an adjective unafraid. The adjective unafraid implies the meaning of becoming fearless. The second modal is also followed by
auxiliary verb be and an adjective relentless which means persistent in determination. From these facts, it means that Donald Trump is potentiality
fearless. In the other words, Donald Trump later will be able to face anything. It is also said that Donald Trump is consistent in his determination to set the lofty
goals. In 8, the modal which is used to show ability is can. There is a verb bear
after the modal. The subject of the sentence is he which refers to Donald Trump. However, there is a negation word not in the sentence which means Donald
Trump is not able to do something. Thus, the sentence means that Donald Trump is not able to bear the condition in the college injustice with every problem in it.
The last example is in 10. In this sentence, the modal which is employed is can. The subject in this sentence is we. Subject we in this sentence refers to the
speaker and audiences. This modal is followed by verb hope, dream and think. By uttering this sentence, Ivanka Trump means that the audiences her are able to
hope, dream, and think again.
