SALIM Hey. Jamal opens his eyes. Jamal is standing over them, swaying with alcohol. JAMAL Salim? He puts his hand out to Latika. SALIM Come. JAMAL No. salim…. Jamal tries to save Latika, but he cannot since Salim is stronger than him. From this, Jamal has to be separated again with Latika for the second time. This time, Jamal loses her for quite a long time. He continuous his life alone until he grows up and works in a call center office as a tea boy. In an empty building, Jamal punches Salim and makes him knows that Salim works for Javed. SALIM Maman’s boys were after us. Had to skip. Jamal keeps on beating him back. JAMAL Liar I, CXXXI, 87. SALIM Who else would protect us from Maman’s gang, huh? JAMAL What do you do for him? SALIM Anything he asks I, CXXX1A, 88. Salim joins Javed’s gang in order to get safety, but Jamal does not directly believes his reason. Since then, Jamal stays with Salim in Salim’s apartment. When Jamal is asleep, Salim creeps into the room and unlocks a desk drawer, then brings out his pistol. However, Jamal opens his eyes and sees it all. JAMAL Slum dogs never sleep, only nap. He would disappear for a couple of days and come back changed. Sometimes elated- I, CXXXII, 89. Jamal is curious about what Salim does, therefore he follows Salim when Salim goes out from the apartment. Salim does not notice Jamal when Jamal is following him. Salim’s car heads to a house. Jamal still looks at him from distance. Salim approaches a gate-house to a large bungalow. The Door-Keeper nods to him, rings a bell. From the rickshaw, Jamal watches a woman come to 48 the door. Latika. eighteen, completely beautiful and rich. She hands Salim a package and goes back inside. Salim gets in his jeep and drives away I, CXXXVI, 90. In the house, he sees Latika and successfully meets her inside the house. He asks her to run away with him, but she does not want to. She makes an excuse to him in case of his safety. When Jamal is inside the house having conversation with Latika, Javed is coming. Javed’s characteristic that he is a bad guy is seen. It is known from the reaction of Latika when Javed comes home. Voices at the gate-house LATIKA God, Javed will kill you. Here. JAMAL Javed? You are with him? She throws him an apron. He gets it on just in time for Javed to walk in. jamal turns away CXXXVIII, 92. Latika saves Jamal from Javed. She makes Jamal to be seen like a cook so that Javed will not know that both of them have a relationship. If Javed knows about Jamal, something bad must be happen. Jamal asks Latika to run away with him since he sees one of Latika’s eyes is bruised. JAMAL Are you happy? LATIKA I have five star food, five star clothes. I sleep in a bed, not on the street. From where we come from, Jamal, that is happiness. JAMAL You don’t look so happy with a black eye. LATIKA You turn up here out of nowhere, telling me I’m not happy: how dare you? I, CXXXVIII, 92. From the conversation, it tells him that Javed must have done something bad to Latika and she cannot do anything. It looks like that she is very afraid to Javed. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 49 She always covers up what actually happens to her. However, Jamal still persuades her to come with him. LATIKA Where have you been? Get in the real world, Jamal. JAMAL You and me. That is the real world. Come away with me. LATIKA You’re crazy. JAMAL Salim will help us. LATIKA Salim? You still believe in Salim? Jamal…. I’ll be gone soon, anyway. Bombay’s got too dangerous for- She indicates Javed. JAMAL You think he’d tell me? I, CXXXVIII, 94. Jamal knows that Latika will leave him again soon with Javed. Javed is very dangerous since he always does what he wants to do without thinking about other people, in this case is Latika. However, Jamal does not care if Latika rejects his offer to run away together. He still promises Latika to always wait her at the VT station until she comes I, CXXXVIII, 95. In the VT station, Jamal sees another side of Javed ’s cruelty. When Latika comes to the station to meet Jamal, Javed’s people sees her. Latika sees them and starts running. Jamal tries to chase her while calling her name. However, Latika is caught and dragged by them to Javed’s car. Jamal is still running behind them in a crowd. Outside the station, Jamal sees Salim waiting in Javed’s car. Latika is jumping the tracks, crossing in front of trains. But the thugs are gaining on her. He brings her down and drags her across to Javed’s waiting Mercedes. Salim is standing by the car. Jamal pushes through the crowds just in time to see Salim her into the car. JAMAL Salim 50 Salim spits disgustedly on the ground. Gets in. Latika twists her head to see Jamal as the car skids off. Jamal screams with hopeless fury I, CXLVA, 99. Jamal is surprised by Salim who comes to take Latika away from him together with Javed ’s people. Salim is also a dangerous people since he helps Javed to take Latika. Latika is not safe that time because she is surrounded by Javed and Salim. After he loses Latika again, he joins the Who Wants to be a Millionaire quiz. From the quiz, he makes his appearance to a lot of people in the country. His appearance on the quiz is seen by Salim and Latika in Javed’s house. SALIM That boy. He will never give up. Never. He shakes his head. SALIM Crazy chutiye. Salim approaches Latika. she flinches as he walks towards her. He puts some car keys in front of her. SALIM Ja. Go. LATIKA But- SALIM - just drive. There won’t be another chance. Go I, CLIX, 109. Latika does what Salim asks her to do. He goes with the car and a mobile phone given by Salim. He even apologizes to Latika and hopes her for a good life. After releasing her, Salim is taking care of Javed. Javed finds out that Jamal appears in the Who Wants to be a Millionaire quiz. He then looks for Salim madly. In the last question of the quiz, Jamal is finally able to talk to Latika I, CXC, 117. There, he is happy for he knows that Latika is safe. However, on the other hand, Salim dies being shot by Javed ’s people after he shoots Javed to die earlier. 51 From Jamal’s decision to appear in the quiz, he successfully releases Latika from dangerous. They can meet each other again after the quiz is over. Latika and Jamal are now safe because they can run away from bad people. However, both of them are safer since Javed dies. Therefore, it can be said that Jamal’s safety need from Maslow’s theory 1943 is already fulfilled. Jamal’s motivation in joining the quiz is seen through fulfilling the safety needs. It is revealed that Jamal joins the quiz in case of their safety. The next need that emerges after the safety need is fulfilled is the love and belonging needs. Jamal’s love and belonging needs are also fulfilled since he has finally found Latika. He can find her and reunite again with the one he loves through his appearance on the Who Wants to be a Millionaire quiz after their long separateness. However, on the other hand, Jamal’s esteem need also has been fulfilled. According to Maslow 1943, self-esteem need leads people to have feelings of confidence, worth, strength and capability of being useful and necessary in the world. In Jamal’s case, he has confidence in joining the Who Wants to be a Millionaire quiz as the contestant and successfully wins the top prize. As a slumdog, he can prove that not every poor person is a criminal since he is suspected as a deceiver. He can show to the world that he can win through his own effort. After fulfilling the esteem need, Jamal moves to the next stage of need which is self- actualization need. Jamal’s self-fulfillment becomes actualized by joining the Who Wants to be a Millionaire quiz and realized his desire into reality. In this case is he successfully meets Latika in the end. Finally, it can be concluded 52 that the deeper meaning of Jamal Malik’s motivation in joining the Who Wants to be a Millionaire quiz is to find his and Latika’s safety. Freud 1923, in McLeod 2016 states that ego develops as the mediator between the id and the external world or reality. The reality in this script is that Jamal is a poor and uneducated person who has nothing. The id here is Jamal’s real motivation, which is the longing to find safety. Joining the quiz and winning the money is the mediator for his motivation. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 53

CHAPTER V CONCLUSIONS, RECOMMENDATIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

This chapter consists of three parts which are conclusions, recommendations and suggestions. The first one is conclusions, which discusses about the conclusions of the analysis in the chapter four which are the characteristics of Jamal Malik, the surface meaning, and the deeper meaning of Jamal Malik’s motivation in joining the Who Wants to be a Millionaire quiz. The second part is recommendations which consist of recommendations for future researchers. The last part is suggestions for English teachers.

A. Conclusions

After analyzing Slumdog Millionaire movie script, the researcher can draw conclusions of this thesis. In this chapter, the researcher is going to conclude the findings into some paragraphs. There are two formulated problems which are discussed in this study. The first one deals with how Jamal Malik is described as the main character in Simon Beaufoy’s Slumdog Millionaire script. Using the theory of character, Jamal is described as a major and round character. It is because Jamal’s character is given attention by the readers and cannot be described just in a single phrase or sentence. Using Murphy’s theory, Jamal is described as a kind, brave, generous, introvert, and reactive person. Jamal’s kind characteristic is shown in 54 one of the situations when he gives Latika his plastic sheet which is used to cover up his body. He gives it to make Latika’s body warmer because her body is wet. Besides, he also lets Latika join them under the same building during the rain, even though Salim does not let her. The next characteristic of Jamal is brave. One of Jamal’s brave characteristics is shown when he is still competing in the Who Wants to be a Millionaire quiz. He does not want to give up at all in the quiz even though the host wants him to give up and brings home the money immediately. Jamal is also a generous person. He easily gives his money to his friend who is blind. Jamal accidently meets him in the street while he is singing to beg for money. Jamal gives him a hundred dollars that he gets from the tourists because Jamal is feeling sorry for him. Other than that, Jamal is an introvert person. It is proved in the situation when Jamal calls his brother to help him answering the question of the quiz. He says that his brother’s number is the only number he knows which means that he never contacts other person except for his brother. In the story itself, Jamal is never seen go out with his friends. The last characteristic seen in the story is reactive. It can be shown when Jamal punches Salim when they meet each other after a long time being separated. He is too angry for everything Salim does to him. The second finding deals with the meaning of Jamal Malik’s motivation in joining the Who Wants to be a Millionaire quiz. The researcher explains the surface and the dee per meaning of Jamal’s motivation. The surface meaning of Jamal’s motivation in joining the quiz is because he wants to meet Latika, the girl PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 55 he loves. They have to be separated several times because of many things. It makes Jamal join the quiz since he knows that Latika loves watching it. In the end of the quiz, Jamal finally can speak to Latika through the phone call from the quiz. Therefore, through the quiz, Jamal is able to meet Latika again. The dee per meaning of Jamal’s motivation in joining the quiz can be seen through Jamal’s motivation based on his needs. Jamal is struggling in fulfilling his safety need. Since he lives in a slum area, he faces a lot of hard things. One of them is when his mother died and he has to live with Salim in the cruel world. One day he meets Latika. They live together until one day Maman takes them to become a beggar. However, Jamal and Salim successfully run away from Maman while Latika is left behind. Maman then makes Latika become a prostitute. After Maman dies, Latika cannot do anything even go anywhere because he is owned by Javed, Maman’s enemy. Jamal several times tries to safe Latika because both of them are not safe if Javed still exists. By joining the Who Wants to be a Millionaire quiz, Jamal can show his presence to Latika and both of them can go together in case of their safety. From this, Jamal’s safety need is fulfilled. He and Latika can release themselves from bad people.

B. Recommendations

This part gives recommendations for the future researchers. For those who want to conduct a study using Slumdog Millionaire script, there are still many aspects that can be analyzed. The analysis of this study is limited to the motivation of Jamal Malik in joining the Who Wants to be a Millionaire quiz. 56 Therefore, the researcher suggests the future researchers to analyze Jamal’s love towards Latika as seen in the Slumdog Millionaire script. Besides, the future researchers can also analyze Salim Malik’s motivation in joining a group of gang as seen in the script.

C. Suggestions

This part gives suggestions for English teachers. Even though Slumdog Millionaire story is an adaptation from a novel, it still can be used for teaching- learning activity. The movie of Slumdog Millionaire is interesting, but teachers can use the script to deepen the students’ understanding about the story. Slumdog Millionaire script can be used as a learning material in teaching Prose, Drama, and Play performance. This script uses flashbacks in delivering the story to the readers which is very interesting. 57 REFERENCES Abrams, M. H. 1999. A glossary of literary terms 7 th ed. Boston: Heinle Heinle Pub.
