36 Jamal Malik is an uneducated person who lives in a slum area since a kid. He grows up alone because he is left by his brother, Salim, and gets separated from Latika, the girl he loves. One day, Jamal decides to join the Who Wants to be a Millionaire quiz and successfully wins the top prize. However, his decision to join the quiz has another purpose more than just getting the money like everyone does. After Jamal’s mother dies, Jamal goes everywhere together with Salim and Latika, until one day Latika is caught by Maman. Being separated with Latika makes him always think about her. After he gets some money from being a fake tour guide and selling some stolen shoes, he asks Salim to come back to Mumbai to find Latika. Jamal and Salim find Latika in Maman’s house and ask her to go with them. After Salim kills Maman, they run together to a hotel to make them safe. After in the hotel for a while, Salim goes somewhere while Jamal and Latika are having conversation. LATIKA You came back for me. JAMAL Of course. LATIKA I thought you’d forgotten. Starting from that time, Jamal lives and survives in his life alone. One day, Jamal meets Salim and punches him on the face. After the meeting, Jamal comes to Javed’s house by following Salim and pretends himself as a new cook. He successfully comes in to Javed’s house and finds Latika. Latika is watching the Who Wants to be a Millionaire quiz while being interupted by her door- keeper’s gate-house. Jamal comes to the kitchen and sees the TV program which is showing the Who Wants to be a Millionaire quiz that does not make him understand why people always watch that kind of TV program. JAMAL Why does everyone love this programme? LATIKA It’s the chance to escape, isn’t it? Walk into another life. Doesn’t everyone want that? JAMAL You have another life. A rich one.
