Even if all those needs are fulfilled, people still expect that a new restlessness will soon develop, unless they are doing what they are fitted for.
According to Kurt Goldstein, a man’s desire for self-fulfillment becomes actualized in what he is potentially. The desire to become more and more is to
become everything that one is capable of becoming pp .372-382.
5. Psychological Approach
In conducting this study, the researcher uses psychological approach. According to Rohrberger and Woods 1971, psychological approach can be used
to analyze the personality of the main character through his mind, thought, and behavior p. 13. Besides, it also can be used in analyzing the motivation of the
main character. In this study, psychological approach is used to solve the problem
formulation by analyzing Jamal Malik as the character and finding the motivation of him in joining the Who Wants to be a Millionaire quiz.
B. Review of Theoretical Framework
Theory of Character from Henkle 1977 and Forster 1927 , in Henkle’s
1977 together with Theory of Characterization from Murphy 1972 are used to solve the first problem about how Jamal Malik is described in the script. Through
the theory, it can help the researcher to find the characterization of Jamal Malik from the script.
17 Theory of Personality from Freud 1923, in McLeod 2010 and Theory of
Motivation from Maslow 1943 are used to slove the second problem. Those can help the researcher to find the motivation of Jamal Malik in joining the quiz.
C. Criticism
In this part, the researcher wants to discuss about o ther people’s study that
relates to the researcher ’s study. There is one study that the researcher finds. Its
title is Ram Mohammad Thomas’ Motivation in Joining “Who Will Win a
Billion?” Quiz As Seen in Vikas Swarup’s Slumdog Millionaire by Ernawati Sriningsih. Here are some differences
between the researcher’s study and Sriningsih’s study: First, the researcher’s primary data is Slumdog Millionaire
movie script, while Sriningsih’s primary data is a novel entitled QA by Vikas Swarup. Second, the aim of this study is to find and reveal the motivation
of one’s crucial decision in joining the quiz, while Sriningsih
’s study is aiming to see from the novel that everyone has his or her motivation and equal right to achieve
everything she or he wants. However, another differentiation will be discussed in the chapter 4.
Overall, the researcher ’s study and Sriningsih’s study are almost the same.
Both use the same primary data but with different genre. The researcher with movie script and Sriningsih with the novel. However, the researcher
’s study and Sriningsih’s study have different point of view to be discussed or analyzed in each
