3. The Influence of the Divorce on Natalie’s Behaviors

A younger child girl suffers the least influence from divorce. It can be proved in what happens to Natalie. She does not really understand what truly happens in her family. She does not know the reasons behind her parents’ divorce. She only knows that her parents’ have quarreled and they decide to live in a separate house. Different from her sister and brother, divorce does not give an essential behavior changing to Natalie. Of course a little girl, she he often cries seeing her father’s ridiculous behavior to express his disappointment towards his wife, just like a common child. “I could murder her. Truly I could Sometimes I think I could cheerfully slit her throat” “No Daddy No” Natalie was off her chair in a moment. Tears scorching her cheeks, she hurled herself across the room, and beat fiercely with her fists. Lydia was shocked. “Dad Really For God’s sake” p.12 It can also be seen through Natalie’s behavior that divorce does not leave essential behavior changing on Natalie. She always tries to make her father, sister and brother laugh. The example is when her father feels disappointed with her mother, Natalie tries to amuse him with a song. “Anything she can buy, Dad can buy better “Dad can buy anything better than her” He held his hands out to Natalie, and swung her round in a circle, singing raucously. Natalie reached for her father as she swung past him, and made him join in, too. To Daniel’s astonishment, Lydia join in of her own accord. p. 15-16 54 Behind her tears, she is only a kind daughter who loves her father very much. She does not want to see her father sad or disappointed. Comparing to her sister and brother, Natalie gets the smallest effect. The divorce does not give too much change on Natalie’s behaviors. It can be concluded that divorce gives harm influences to Lydia, Christopher, and Natalie. The influences of divorce are different to each child. Different gender and age are a few factors that can differentiate the influences of divorce on children. Lydia, she becomes brave to her parents and she also becomes independent girl. Christopher becomes sensitive, rebellious and dependent boy. Natalie, the divorce does not take necessary changing on her behaviors. 55

A. Conclusion

After analyzing the novel, I come to the conclusion that answers the problems formulated previously. Lydia is characterized as a strong, responsible, brave, and impatient girl. As the eldest children in the Hilliard family she must be strong to face the reality that separation happened in her family. After her parents’ divorce Lydia has a new responsibility to take care of both her brother and her little sister. Lydia is a responsible girl. She watches her brother and her little sister while their mother is working. Lydia is also a brave girl, when she thinks that her parents are wrong she directly tells them that they are wrong. She is not afraid if her father or mother gets angry. Sometimes her parents act like children especially her father when they start to argue about children Lydia will impatiently stop them. Therefore, Lydia becomes a rebellious child. 55
