CHAPTER V CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

The answer of the problems formulated in chapter one will be briefly summarized in this chapter. The first problem is how the characteristics of Lydia, Christopher, and Natalie describe in this novel. The second is why Lydia’s, Christopher’s, and Natalie’s parents got divorced. The last is how the divorce influences Lydia’s, Christopher’s, and Natalie’s behaviors. This chapter also presents the suggestions for the future researchers and suggestions of using literature for teaching learning processes.

A. Conclusion

After analyzing the novel, I come to the conclusion that answers the problems formulated previously. Lydia is characterized as a strong, responsible, brave, and impatient girl. As the eldest children in the Hilliard family she must be strong to face the reality that separation happened in her family. After her parents’ divorce Lydia has a new responsibility to take care of both her brother and her little sister. Lydia is a responsible girl. She watches her brother and her little sister while their mother is working. Lydia is also a brave girl, when she thinks that her parents are wrong she directly tells them that they are wrong. She is not afraid if her father or mother gets angry. Sometimes her parents act like children especially her father when they start to argue about children Lydia will impatiently stop them. Therefore, Lydia becomes a rebellious child. 55 56 Christopher is a sensitive boy, he cannot hide his feeling. Sometimes he cries when he feels angry, sad, and disappointed. He is also a dependent boy. He always asks his sister to help him to strengthen his opinion. He is afraid to say what he wants. For example he wants to meet his father and spend the time together with his father, but his mother does not allow him. He blames his parents for the inconvenient relationship. Christopher also becomes a rebellious boy after the divorce. He does not like whenever his mother tries to separate him from his father. The last one is Natalie. She is an innocent, cheerful and tearful girl. She admires her father even though her mother, her sister and her brother sometimes are angry with him. Her innocent thought sometimes can touch her parents’ hearts especially her father, Daniel. Natalie cries easily when her sister or her brother starts to tease her. Based on the analysis it can be concluded that Miranda is not happy with her marriage life. Since her wedding party, she feels that maybe she takes the wrong decision. Daniel leaves Miranda on her wedding ceremony only for doing ridiculous things. Miranda keeps the marriage on until she gets three adorable children from Daniel. Having three children does not change Daniel’s behavior. Recently Daniel becomes an unemployment artist, so she works harder to get more money for her family’s daily needs. Seeing there is no changing or response from Daniel with the family condition makes Miranda feels angry, upset and disappointment. Finally Miranda decides to get divorced. There are many reasons that lead their marriage into 57 divorce, first, a growing financial independence of Miranda, second, their different personal background, and the last, their different education. The divorce brings several bad influences on the children. The influences are different to each child. It depends on their age and gender. First is Lydia, she becomes brave to argue on her parents statements. Her bravery is not in good way. She dares to shout at her father and her mother when she feels that both of them are out of control. Lydia also becomes independent girl, she does not care anymore to what her parents say or do. She only thinks about her life. Second is Christopher. After his parents’ divorce, Christopher becomes sensitive, he is easily to cry whenever he sees his parents’ fight or when he cannot utter his feeling. He becomes a dependent boy. He always asks her sister to help him to convince his mother. He cannot be as stronger as his sister. The last influence, he becomes a rebellious child. He often argues on his mother decisions. The last is Natalie. The divorce does not give many influences on her behaviors. Since she is only a five-year-old child, she does not really understand with her parents divorce. The conclusion above can answer the three formulated problems stated in chapter one.
