NARRATIVE TEXT 1 Definition and purpose of narrative text  Narrative text focus on a pattern of events with a problematic andor unexpected outcome. The purpose of the text is to entertain and educate the reader. 2 Generic structure Narrative text has three parts:  Orientation In this paragraph the narrator introduces the background of the story. It includes the participants, setting of the place, and also time of the story. Therefore, the reader can get the exact situation of the story.  Complication Here in complication, the problems happen. It describes about the crisis the characters faced.  Resolution In the part, the problem is solved. It has two possibilities; it can end in sad or happy ending. 3 Language features: Narrative usually includes the following grammatical features:  Simple past tense  Past continuous tense  Temporal conjunction  Connective words  Adverbs  Adjective QUESTION GENERATION STRATEGY 1 Definition of Question Generation Strategy  Question generation is one of reading comprehension strategies in which readers generate and answer meaningful questions about key point or main ideas while reading.  When using question generation strategy, students can create their own questions and answer it by themselves rather than only answer questions created by the teacher. 2 Purposes of Question Generation Strategy  Students will actively engage and interact with the text.  Students will have a deeper understanding of the text because they know what they need to find in the text.  Students will have a better comprehension about the text.  Increases students’ awareness of whether or not they comprehend what they are reading. 3 Steps to Apply Question Generation Strategy  Students first read the narrative text silently.  During their reading process, the students have to find the important idea in the text.  After that, they have to turn the important idea into a question. The questions are in the form of WH-questions What, Where, When, Why, Who, and How.  The last, they need to answer the question based on the information on the text they read. NARRATIVE TEXT The King’s Belt One day while a mouse deer was walking in the forest, he saw a big black snake sleeping under the tree. When he saw the snake, the mouse deer was frightened. When he wanted to run away from the snake, he suddenly fell on top of a tiger which was sleeping not far from the snake. The tiger woke up and took of the mouse deer. He told the mouse deer that he was going to eat him for lunch. “Please don’t eat me now,” said the mouse deer. “I have something important to do.” “Look,” said the mouse deer. “That is the king’s belt. He asked me to stay here and watch it while he was away in the forest.” The tiger looked at the snake and said, “That is a beautiful belt. I need a belt like that. Can I wear it?” He asked the mouse deer. “Oh all right,” said the mouse deer. So he picked up the snake and winded it around the tiger. Then the snake woke up and saw the tiger. The snake twisted itself tighter until the tiger couldn’t breathe. The tiger asked the mouse deer to help him. But the mouse deer turned and ran away into the forest. Little Red Riding Hood Once upon a time, there was a girl called Little Red Riding Hood. The girl walked through the woods to deliver food to her grandmother. A wolf wanted to eat her but was afraid to do so in public. The wolf approached the girl. She naively told him where she was going. He advised the girl to pick up some flowers. She really did it. In the meantime, he went to the grandmother’s house and gained entry by pretending to be the girl. He ate the grandmother and waited for the girl. He disguised as the grandmother. When the girl arrived, he ate the girl too. However, a hunter came to rescue and cut the wolf open. Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother emerged unharmed. They f illed the wolf’s body with heavy stones, which killed him. The Countryman’s Son A countryman’s son stepped on a snake’s tail accidentally. The tail suddenly turned and hit him so that he died. The father was very angry so that he cut off part of the snak e’s tail. Then, the snake in revenge stung several of the farmer’s cattle. It caused him great loss. However, the farmer decided to stop the fight with the snake. He brought food and honey to the mouth of its lair, and said to it, “Let’s forget and forgive. Perhaps you were right to punish my son, and take revenge on my cattle, but surely I was right in trying to revenge him. Now that we are both satisfied, why should not we be friends again?” “No, no,” said the snake. “Take away your gifts. You can never forget the death of your son, nor I the loss of my tail. Injuries may be forgiven, but nor forgotten.” The Legend of Banyuwangi Once upon a time, there was a local ruler named King Sulahkromo. The king had a Prime Minister named Raden Sidopekso. The Prime Minister had a wife named Sri Tanjung. She was so beautiful that the king wanted her to be his wife. One day, the King sent his Prime Minister to a long mission. While the Prime Minister was away, the King tried to get Sri Tanjung. However he failed. He was very angry. Thus, when Sidopekso went back, the King told him that his wife was unfaithful to him. The Prime Minister was very angry with his wife. Sri Tanjung said that it was not true. However, Sidopekso said that he would kill her. He brought her to the river bank. Before he kill her and threw her into the river, she said that her innocence would be proven. After Sidopekso killed her, he threw her dead body into the dirty river. The river immediately became clean and began to spread a wonderful fragrance. Sidopekso said, “Banyu…Wangi…Banyuwangi”. This means “fragrant water”.
