c. Violating Maxim of Relevance
Violating maxim of Relevance happens when someone is deliberately telling an irrelevant statement or topic Alvaro, 2011, as seen in the excerpt
below:
EXCERPT 7.9 Rachel is in a restaurant to have dinner with her date Michael. This is the
first time Michael meets Rachel, they do not know each other. Rachel is still jealous of Ross and Julie who are having a cat. She seems thinking
something, and Michael tries to break the ice. Michael
: I dont know if Monica told you but this is the first date Ive gone on since my divorce so, if I seem a little nervous,
I am. Rachel
: distracted How long do cats live?
Michael :
confused Im sorry? Michael talked about his nervousness when meeting Rachel that night, but
Rachel violated the maxim of Relevance by changing the topic. Rachel suddenly asked question about cats. Michael was confused since he did not know what
Rachel’s thought, but the audience would find that it was funny because the audiences knew what Rachel’s thought and why she asked that question.
d. Violating Maxim of Manner
When someone is violating maxim of Manner, heshe tends to talk too much. According to Thomas 1995, the speaker is liable to mislead the hearer
when heshe violates the maxims. The characters of Friends were frequently
violating maxim of Manner as the case follow:
EXCERPT 3.6 At
Monica and Rachel’s apartment, Ross is still shocked and cannot accept the fact that Phoebe does not believe in evolution. Ironically, Ross’
50 job is dealing with evolution and he has studied evolution for years. He
forces Phoebe to believe in evolution. Ross : You dont believe in evolution?
Phoebe : I dont know, its just, you know...monkeys, Darwin, you know,
its a, its a nice story, I just think its a little too easy.
Ross : Too easy? Too...The process of every living thing on this planet evolving over millions of years from single-celled
organisms, is-is too easy?
Phoebe : Yeah, I just dont buy it. Even for everyone on the show, Ross’ statement to Phoebe sounded
amusing. The audiences and the other characters in Friends already knew that
Ross’ mind and Phoebe’s would not be the same. Phoebe was an uneducated person, in the other hand, Ross’ was a scientist. No matter how many times Ross
explained to Phoebe, Phoebe could not understand, because Ross used a definition of evolution in science language. Ross’ explanation was long, not clear, and for
Phoebe it was difficult to comprehend. In this case, Ross violated maxim of Manner.
